Challenging my high-lvl group (NPCs and monsters; my players shouldn't read this!)

Okay, so I should have looked up the creature before posting. :) Hmm, the Worms predate the gods. Do they predate Demons and Devils? Maybe some of those have useful information. Elementals also have no specific lifespan. Heck, there might well be some really old fey that would have info...

Challenging my high-lvl group (NPCs and monsters; my players shouldn't read this!)

Well, the ones who are likely to have collected the most info are likely the ones who have been around the longest. Demiliches spring to mind, and as a bonus are a) epic (from the ELH, anyway) and b) likely to be uncooperative. I'd stat one up, but it's too much work. I envision a sage who...

Challenging my high-lvl group (NPCs and monsters; my players shouldn't read this!)

Well gosh, apparently I spoke truer than I knew. Ioun is... brilliant. :) I do wonder how long he can keep it up. I would think that Ioun would be working to decentralize the empire, so people don't have to rely on him as much. Recruiting the Defenders to be his troubleshooters would be...

Piratecat's up-to-date story hour (updated on 8/10, come game with PCat at GenCon!)

What I want to know is, how powerful is Ioun really? I assume he's into Epic levels, but even that's not guaranteed. Being the last of a fabled group of powerful Magic-Users doesn't necessarily make you the most powerful mage around, although it might. I'd just as soon not assume anything...

    Orgins: It has started

I was running games for the RPGA most of the weekend (mostly Eberron and Living Greyhawk), and everything seemed to be going very smoothly, other than the major hosing that GAMA did by losing both printing and tracking capability for event tickets. You might have seen me, I was in the giant...

Sagiro's Story Hour Returns (new thread started on 5/18/08)

PG Wodehouse is one of the best comic authors, living or dead, around. I believe that everyone should read at least one Jeeves novel, just to know how the artform should be done. --Seule

    WotC -- Worst Excerpt EVAR!

I think this book has me less excited than any core D&D release since... erm, the Book of Challenges. I normally pick up every book for D&D from Wizards, and I think I'll be giving it a pass. So far it looks like a way to build your character around a weapon, and that smacks of losing creative...

An open "Thank you" to Erik Mona

I, personally, would much rather see Wil Save included than Downer. However, I realize that the magazine isn't specifically designed to meet my tastes, but to meet the tastes of the target market as a whole, which I am one part of. It still does that. I'll keep my subscription, because the...

    D&D Class Survivor -- Round 1

You want to say that to my Dwarven Trapspringer? Little Dex, high Str, Con and Int. Good in combat (tough enough to survive to get into flank), and good at those Int based skills. There are way too many class skills for any rogue to have them all high, so which ones you pick will decide in...

    D&D Class Survivor -- Round 1

Alrighty, so I'm playing a Fighter. At any level (particularly 1st) it pays better for combat to take one level of Barbarian. I get better hitpoints, better saves (than straight fighter), much better skills, and the ability to rage. If I happen to be lightly armoured, I also get fast...

Piratecat's Updated Story Hour! (update 4/03 and 4/06)

Not all worthy storyhours can be always on page 1, there's not enough space. If every storyhour that was good was automatically bumped when it hit page two, the board software would rapidly overload and explode, showering the server room with burning shrapnel, and there would be no boards...

I have Buffy so why buy Angel?

I play a game that uses both, and really, there's extra stuff in Angel (including slightly tweaked character creation that doesn't assume everyone is a teenager), but not a whole lot. I'd say the best reason to get it would be for completeness, and (I believe) more on various types of demons...

    Wizardru's Story Hour (updated 11/21)

Remember Practiced Spellcaster means your caster level goes up, but you don't actually get any more spells. You are just better at beating SR and such. --Seule

    Wizardru's Story Hour (updated 11/21)

I've just put out an email to that player, to see if she still has the list. I remember it included quite a few "Killed by a fall", as well as "Shredded by big monsters". It also included a few "Disappeared into darkness, never came back" and I suspect that there was at least one "Vanished to...

    Wizardru's Story Hour (updated 11/21)

My party (capaign went from 4th to 20th level) got very fond of my Astral Constructs walking out front of the party, and triggering traps and ambushes. I can't count how many times poor Atlas saved us all, and indeed one player kept track of all the ways he died. --Seule

    D&D Race Survivor -- Round 3

Wait, so let me get this straight. Elves have longer generations than anyone else, they are less numerous than most races, and they have the most variety? Something doesn't fit here. With fewer generations in a given timespan they should be deviating less from the base stock, not more. Plus...

    Round 17 IS OVER

Unless you have Great Cleave, you only get 1 cleave attack per round. Great Cleave combined with Tiny foes (all gathered around you, in all three dimensions) can yield a very large number of attacks though... until the DM rules thatit's a swarm. --Seule

    Round 17 IS OVER

I really hate Rapid Shot. Watch an actual real-world archer sometime, and tell me that they can fire even one arrow every 6 seconds accurately, and I'll tell you that they are very good. Somehow in D&D archery became the attack that you make more often for less damage, rather than the other way...
