Why is it so difficult to find good groups?

PC: I dunno if you should be happy or concerned we're in sync. ;)

Why is it so difficult to find good groups?

One other thing: In general, I only game with friends. Now, it could be I'm new to a group, and maybe know one guy, but eventually, I either become friends with most of the group, or I bail. The few times i have tried to join a group where my only contact with those people was at the table, I...

Why is it so difficult to find good groups?

I dunno. I've never had trouble finding people to play 1e AD&D with. I've recruited my friends and lapsed players, and that has generated interest among friends of friends, some of whom became friends with me over time..... I guess I'm just lucky. :)

    Tips/Tricks/Rituals to "bless" new dice?

Gygax signed one of my AD&D 1e PHBs and one of my AD&D 1e DMGs. I follow the Hackmaster protocol, as detailed in the bottom of the "Fame Rub" box in the HM 4e PHB. When I want a high number, I rub the die across Gary's signature, left to right. For low numbers, I rub right to left. The other...

The Real Housewives/husbands of your RPG Group

My wife is very supportive of my gaming. She has no problem with me attending a bi-weekly game, and even spent the better part of two years playing in my AD&D Greyhawk campaign, where she totally kicked ass. The guys still miss her 5 years later and hope remains that she will come back to the...

Scott Thorne, a retailer, comments on recent events

yeah that's just "Business 2.0" at work in the boardroom, as they seek to reap profits from the persistently connected masses. A company that large would be off their freakin' rockers not to try market to that audience.

Why is Online Gaming considered Second Class?

Yup. Its more of an excuse to get together, act silly, and hang out with friends, than "serious business about the game" for me and my friends.

    AD&D or 5e

If and when 5e shows up, I'd give it a look if I'm looking for a new fantasy game at that time. When 4e came out, I wasn't, and the debut demo didn't intrigue me enough to pursue it. As far as a rerelease of AD&D, I can't see that being a money maker for WotC, unless it was a print on-demand...

    Would you buy...

My DragonScale counters I bought at GenCon in 2003 are still holding up just fine. ;)

    WotC: Re-issue older editions.

I'd be interested in some print-on-demand versions of older product, but it have to be of higher quality than the PDFs they used to sell. Now, it isn't hard to do. I cut apart an old AD&D PHB, scanned it, and put it PDF format over the span of a couple evenings, in my spare time. It prints so...

Scott Thorne, a retailer, comments on recent events

One thing is for sure, WotC isn't going to maintain the #1 market share by removing products from the release schedule. You gotta have product on the shelves, you know? In addition, whether or not 4e (and D&D as TableTop product) is circling the drain, certainly people are worried about it...

[WotC's recent insanity] I think I've Figured It Out

I can only assume you don't have kids. Mine are incredibly creative. They write and illustrate their own stories, build amazing stuff with legos, construct all kinds of stuff from paper, cardboard, tape, and glue, and love playing tabletop D&D and miniatures. And lest you think I've...

What if WotC just said "That's it."

I pretty much stopped being actively interested in what WotC was doing with D&D in the early 3.5 days (2004, I guess). So, really it wouldn't affect me at all. I'm an old school guy, and I'm happily playing older editions, and if I really wanted something else, I have RuneQuest, Stormbringer...

    Most Played FRPG of 2010

1st Ed AD&D Labyrinth Lord + AEC LL was an interesting experiment, but 1e AD&D is still the go-to game for me, and likely always will be. Played a couple non-fantasy as well.

What would WotC need to do to win back the disenchanted?

They're really two different animals, and comparing them straight up is kinda weird, IMO. Pathfinder succeeds because it meets a pretty big niche: those who enjoyed 3e and want to continue playing a version of it, which is still in print. Fixing some shortcomings of 3e and the player network...

How were you introduced to RPGs?

I had a two-stage intro. In the late 70s, an older cousin of mine ran a CSIO campaign using OD&D and I think Supp I and II, maybe III. He used to play down in his basement with his friends, blaring Rush at about 100dB, smoking dope, lava lamps, paisely shirts, black lights (he made some ghost...

What would WotC need to do to win back the disenchanted?

You bet. I think the outcome is likely to be tabletop RPGs will continue to be marginalized in brick and mortar stores, completely disappearing from the shelves in some stores, which makes WotC's attitude about PDFs all the more frustrating. I'd personally much rather by a book from the FLGS...

What would WotC need to do to win back the disenchanted?

For me, everything I *really* want is on my shelf in deadtree format (plus a lot of crap I don't, thank goodness for ebay). There are some I don't have in PDF, but would like to have, and I'd gladly pay for a legit copy. I'd rather pay for a legit copy, actually. but there is no "need" as I'm...

What would WotC need to do to win back the disenchanted?

Yeah, this is pretty freaking easy: yanking the PDFs was a business decision. Whether it was to properly defend the IP, piracy cutting into dead-tree sales, fear of older edition sales undermining the new edition, or all of the above, it was a business decision, pure and simple. The official...
