    Do You Believe in Magic?

I'm in the "no" camp on magic. I think that if someone were able to rub some bat guano and sulphur together while mumbling some words and then blast a ball of fire out of their hands there would be some sort of physical and measureable explanation. If such an incident were to occur, I think it...

    daze

It depends on how long the daze effect lasts. If, like the cantrip, it's only for 1 round, then I'd probably rule it a level 4-5 spell. If the duration is longer it might go higher.

Forked Thread: Does Turn Undead need fixing?

I too have found that Turn Undead get less useful at higher levels where many undead creatures have a lot of HD and turn resistence. However, the party's Radiant Servant of Pelor has some abilities he can use that are powered by turning attempts, so the fact that he has something like 14 per day...

D&D 3.x Worst 3.5 rule from core books?

Really? Really really? I think that's a bit unnecessary. It's a bit like The Sims. Why I'd want to make my digital character go potty makes no sense. I'd rather be taking a deuce myself instead as it's much more satisfying. When I play a video/computer game I really only want to think about...

    thrallherd PrC.

First off, I've had one Thrallherd in my campaign ever. He was definitely NOT good. I don't know if I'd define him as outright evil, but definitely selfish. I'd probably agree with the OP on the alignment requirement, since a player CHOOSES to become a Thrallherd. Yes, they can role play it away...

    Cadfan's Comments on Everything 4e

Regardless of how long a round is defined as in the rules, I've always imagined that if there's only one attack roll per round then the character is actually weaving, feinting, and getting small nicks in. If a character has multiple attack rolls per round, as in 3.x D&D and many other systems...

    On Marking ("Why you little . . . ")

So a paladin waving a sword at someone from across the room gets to do extra damage? Or is it just that the guy he marks now takes a penalty for not dealing with the the paladin? The first instance makes some sort of sense to me, as long as he's within melee range, but the ranged aspect makes no...

    On Marking ("Why you little . . . ")

IME so far I'm still having trouble finding a good way to explain the marking effects. Part of it is that I haven't really gotten much opportunity to play 4e but at the same time it seems too much like an MMO or FFXII style to me. How close does someone have to be to mark a target? If a melee...

    D&D 3.x Best 3.5 rules?

This is directed at StreamoftheSky a bit. I too was greatly thrilled by a uniform level advancement system. No more, "The thief is now level 15! Wizard, you're only level 10". I never really liked or understood why one class required more experience to gain levels than another. It made wizards...

    Forked Thread: Core Prestige Classes

First of all, why is everyone so hard on the monk class? We had a character who managed just fine as a monk from 1st-17th level. He dealt out decent chunks of damage, used his skills, and generally made things amusing for the DM and the party. Second, VoP greatly increases a monk's ability to be...

    D&D 3.x 3.5 Burst effects

My general rule for burst effects is this: if it says it creates a burst centered on you, the caster, then it doesn't effect you (unless you choose to let it). If it creates a burst effect that you can cast at range but you decide to center it on yourself, then it will effect you no matter what.

    D&D 3.x Best 3.5 rules?

One aspect of 3.5 that I really like is skills. I'm a little peeved at the 4e skill system since it basically means that anyone of a certain level who is trained in a given skill is equally as good at it as some other shmuck of the same level. The 3.5 skill system allows for characters of equal...

    HD Advancement and Caster Level

You might have CL increase by one for every two HD you give the creature. I forget if the CR also increases every two HD, but if so, then it's the same progression.

4E Criticals - explain to me why they're less swingy

While it can be rather disheartening to have your 4th level whatever KOed in one round by a lowly orc, I find that the chance for really big crits makes the game a little more interesting and deadly. If the characters don't have to think about the possibility of a massive crit taking them out in...

    Looking past the powers

Winging it can be scary, but I find that if I set the DC for crazy stunts at a reasonable amount, which depends on the level of the party and their skill levels, then they are more willing to try strange tactics (like the Hulking Hurler throwing the dwarf fighter/rogue/dragon disciple at the...

    Ecl

If you want to let the minotaur into your game at only 3rd level all you have to do is sack the racial HD, BAB, Saves, skills, and feats. Then just let the minotaur take 1 level in a class and give him/her the racial bonuses to stats, skills, darkvision, scent, etc.

    A solution to LA?

I'm with you on this. The giant in the example has a lot more bonuses to stats, natural armor, reach, etc. that make it way more powerful than the human in the example. What my group does is simply this: if a player wants to be a monster we look at its LA (minotaur for +2, for example). If the...

    A solution to LA?

But the problem with giving them levels in Commoner in place of the LA is the question of where do the powers and stat ups go? LA represents a monster race's extra powers, spell like abilities, and big stat bonuses. If your drow with commoner levels still gets its racial abilities PLUS the HD...

    A solution to LA?

So you give it Commoner levels in place of what? I think there's a lot of you who don't understand the LA system in d20 the same way I understand it. My understanding is simply this: if you want to see what level character a monster (just from the basic MM stats) would be compared to a PC race...

    A solution to LA?

My understanding of the LA system is that a monsters LA is due to its stat bonuses, powers, natural armor, etc. while any Saves, HP, BAB, skills, etc. are due to its racial HD. In my campaigns we've always allowed players who want to be a monster race to do it as long as the LA +level(s) in a...
