[UPDATED!] The Unsung (Female) Half of the D&D Team!

Of me and others in the industry apparently. I'm so sorry that my neural architecture in some ways resembles that of most XX versus most XY individuals despite having a Y myself. So sorry for a developmental hitch in utero, because clearly I'm just delusional according to you. :(

What's a Freelance RPG Writer Worth?

I should hope that writing so grossly over your word limit is a mistake that a freelancer only makes once, get's corrected by their editor, and never does it again. I know this from very early experience. ;) Early experience that I still get (rightly) teased about years later. XD

D&D 5E (2014) Some thoughts on WotC's release schedule and the OGL

The more long-term people that WotC loses, they're eventually going to run into a problem with loss of institutional knowledge regarding older setting material, making it significantly harder to create material for those (even if the text is being written by freelancers, because you still need...

And then there were 8! On Chris Sims and Jennifer Clarke Wilkes' Layoffs...

What novel line would that be? At present, there are only three authors contracted out for future novels (all FR), and the novel line has dramatically shrunk in the past few years (with several cancelled, and others going e-book only). Additionally, per Elaine Cunningham, WotC no longer has any...

    D&D 5E (2014) Gods in the mltliverse/great wheel

I can think of a number of references to Aebrynis within Planescape sourcebooks as well.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you allow adult situations in your games?

Adult themes show up if A) it makes sense for the setting, the circumstances, and the characters involved B) all of the players at the table are ok with the game going there I generally try to preserve a sense of subtlety with darker themes, but if you intentionally throw back the curtain as a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Wizards Should Hire Paizo

That's the conventional wisdom yes, but how much that's the case anymore I think is open for debate. The number of novels has plummeted in the past few years, with a number of cancellations and some novels prior to print going out in ebook only format rather than physical print. There are maybe...

    D&D 5E (2014) Help Me Grok Slaad

Slaadi have unfortunately far too often been handled in D&D in two extremes, either for comic effect or as rampaging monsters with effectively little to differentiate them in presentation from demons. On top of that the death slaadi have been outright CE in some editions and then without a IMO...

D&D 5E (2014) Which Demon Lord(s) are associated with orcs

I'm rather well aware that you can tinker with anything you like in a home campaign, I do so liberally in my own. But when someone is asking specifically about demon lords in a thread, I'm going to answer regarding demon lords as opposed to things that aren't, like Gruumsh. For instance if...

    D&D 5E (2014) Gem of Your Collection

Glare from the ceiling fan's light aside, these are the gems of my collection: the Wayne Reynolds' originals of the 'loths in the 3e Manual of the Planes, and the cover of Pathfinder's 'The Great Beyond: A Guide to the Multiverse'. The only way that I'm topping that is if I ever get an original...

D&D 5E (2014) Which Demon Lord(s) are associated with orcs

Demon lords have always been an exception versus Gruumsh and the others deities in the orcish pantheon. You could always take a page from Pathfinder lore and use either Lamashtu or Anghazan. Baphomet would also work on some level as well.

D&D 5E (2014) Which Demon Lord(s) are associated with orcs

Because demon lords are intrinsically linked to the Abyss, and Gruumsh isn't in the Abyss?

    D&D 5E (2014) A Banquet In The Nine Hells

It's also worth skimming over the 2e Planescape adventure, 'Fires of Dis' which involves the PCs meeting Dispater face to face in Dis.

    D&D 5E (2014) A Banquet In The Nine Hells

Dispater is godlike in terms of personal power in Dis, and if he's throwing the PCs a banquet, ask yourself what he intends to get from it that he couldn't get simply be killing them and taking their souls by brute imposition of his will? Perhaps he could do just that, and perhaps he could imply...

    D&D 5E (2014) A Banquet In The Nine Hells

While it isn't a devil's banquet (a 'loth's banquet instead), the following is a rather unique dinner that I wrote up for my Storyhour (warning, lots of blood): The black oblivion of unconsciousness lifted along with the black cloth hood from over Malcolm's head. A brilliant spotlight focused...

D&D 5E (2014) 5th edition Forgotten Realms: Why can't you just ignore the lore?

While Sailormoon has been a bit overly insistent in some recent threads, I think what was said earlier in this thread is a perfectly reasonable take when it comes to how a given RPG setting IP is handled by designers and developers when publishing a product versus how individual DMs at home...

    Shemeska's Planescape Storyhour - (Updated 27July2025)

Dawn’s first light broke above the skyline of Plague-Mort. The siege of the past day was over but the battles in the streets had lasted all of the night. Through it all, the man who stood there upon the ramparts of the Arch-Lector’s palace at the heart of the gatetown had seen and directed every...
