    Oversized Reach Weapons

Well, if I'm understanding the RAW correctly (blind monkeys find the occasional banana), a centaur is a Large creature with a 5' Reach, so it needs a Large Polearm to double its natural Reach to attack an opponent one square away. That would mean that even though a centaur and a human have the...

    Oversized Reach Weapons

But to me, since centaur's have human-sized torsos, it makes more sense to give them human sized gear. And centaurs don't really come up enough for it to make much of a difference. Its easier for me to make an exception for the centaur's size category (making it a Med and Large creature stuck...

    5-foot step and Huge Monsters

As an idea, I don't think its inherently good or bad. I think it has applications. But I'd agree its a substantial change to the combat system. D&D is probably the best system out there for getting into a boxing match with Godzilla. Size and speed tend to break down at the extremes anyway...

    Dread Necromancer- Advanced Learning

So I'm kicking around an idea for a dread necromancer, and I noticed the Advanced Learning ability which allows me to pick any Clr or Wiz Necromancy spell and put it on my list. I don't stray that far from core normally, and most of the basic book necromancy spells are already on the DN's list...

    5-foot step and Huge Monsters

Yeah, I like the Single Step rule in which each size cat's free move is the size of its base. I've never been wild that a Tiny housecat, a Large dire lion and a Colossal cat all make the same position adjustment of 5', but changing has a pretty big impact on the way the game is played. It...

    Oversized Reach Weapons

We've had the centaur discussion before. The Centaur Exception (as I'll be calling it today) I don't mind, because they have the torso of a Medium-sized human and the body of a horse, which is Large long. Anything a centaur wields or wears from the waist up is sized for a Medium human...

    Ship Combat

Stormwrack suggests running ship-to-ship combat dramatically as opposed to looking for a more strict set of mechanics, although those do exist in the Arms and Equipment Guide. I've also looked at the third party supplements Seas of Blood and the Seafarers Handbook, but in all candor I'm not...

    Good-Flavored Evil?

Edit: Beaten to the punch again. My obsessive need to spell check slows me down.

    Oversized Reach Weapons

That's the way I prefer to run it as well. It sweetens the deal for Monkey Grip, for one thing. And I can buy the imagery. If a Medium polearm is about 10' long and a Large polearm is about 20' long, I can see the latter imparting more Reach to the wielder.

How often does your party fail?

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. In years past, players of mine have complained that my games are too hard because they often fail, either by dying or by becoming frustrated because they can't figure out how to succeed. I think one problem is some of my players think in terms of...

    Good-Flavored Evil?

There was a great video game (well, I liked it) called Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy. Sort of an action/adventure with puzzle solving and some RPG elements. In it, a prince was turned into a mundane mummy (the non-undead kind... or the dead kind) and over the course of the game you collected his...

I'd like to see a dire eagle take off.

Actually, I have a theory that covers giant insects and giant flying creatures. The D&D minis are Actual Size. So the Colossal spider is just one of the big South American tarantulas. And a Giant Eagle is about the size of an ordinary sparrow. My theory also explains how high level D&D...

    Micro Machines?

Micro Machines are about half the size of Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars. They're closest to N scale train scenery, although I've never really set them up side by side. 25mm is a little bigger than 1/72 scale figures (which are 1" figures, but tend to be much more realistically porportioned and...

Should D&D Have an Alternate Death Mechanic?

I think Death makes a poor default for losing in D&D; a lot of times instead of coming up with consequences for failure we just gamble with the ability to keep playing. Death becomes commonplace, so ways around Death have to be in the system. Raise Dead, Resurrection and so on, and Death...

    E6: The Game Inside D&D

How fast do you see levelling in the Epic range? Just going by the xp charts it looks like 6th level characters will earn 5000xp in 5-10 encounters. On a flight of fancy, lets assume it takes a weekly group six months to reach 6th level (a session a week, four sessions per level), and then...

    Sentient Undead PC Race

Undead are pretty similar mechanically to constructs, and we have Warforged, so anything's possible. You could do something similiar, making a race of lesser undead ("kinda undead") that don't share the all the immunities of the Undead Type.

    "Epic" progression after 6th level

Well, I'd say going all melee at 6th is more diversification for a Wizard than powering up, but any time a character gains something, power is involved. I'm not entirely sold on the idea that say Wpn Focus is more of a power up than Skill Focus; its all about getting better at what you want...

    "Epic" progression after 6th level

Well, clearly, because once he hit the level cap he picked up Martial Weapons Proficiency. That's actually an interesting idea for a character under this system. Go 6 in Wizard and once you go Epic alternate between taking Increased Toughness and offensive feats like Martial Weapon, Weapon...

    "Epic" progression after 6th level

When it comes to Knowledge checks, "unbeatable" DC's are generally plot points. If a DC is too high for a pc to know, a lower DC may point them to where that information might be found. If the pcs can't make the DC 35 Knowledge check to figure out how a guy became a lich, a DC 25 might let...

How we experienced the game, in totally different and incompatible ways

I always liked the forge's "Cargo Cult" metaphor. All these groups started with pretty much the same material (PHB, DMG, a few modules) and then played a few years more or less in isolation. You could easily have two groups in one town running pretty much the same game, but having completely...
