    Pirates of Dark Water

I'm currently more obsessed with how I'm going to build that big, evil, skull-faced pirate ship. I'm gearing up to run a Pirates of the Sunless Sea game, and that thing just screams... big, evil, skull-faced pirate ship.

Looking for Alternate Totem Warriors (Bat, Rat, Spider, etc)

The forums from montecook.com and diamondthrone.com are one in the same. I had high hopes for finding some of these over there, but apparently they lost a bunch of posts that were never recovered or rewritten-- bat totems among them. Posters over there suggested putting new totem warriors up...

    Melee Weapon Mastery

I just picked it up with my fighter/barbarian. A friend of mine that had the PHB II pointed it out to me, and I took it because it was way, way better than what I had planned on taking-- Improved Wpn Focus. Basically, it freed up a feat slot, since I'm no longer taking Imp Wpn Spec at a later...

What happen if a fire elemental fails to make the jump over a body of water?

Absent a specific reference to fire elementals taking damage from water, I'd rule that the elemental who came up short on his jump check would be shunted back to the edge he jumped from (even if he had jumped 38' across a 40' river). There's be a lot of steam and some hissing curse words in...

Kuo-toa Love - or how do you like your fish?

This is similar to how I've always used them, but they're supposed to be lawful evil types. It's their damnable neutrality. I mean, what is it that makes a man turn his heart to Neutral? Is it a love of gold? Aside from being one of the neater looking fish people (I dig the fins, man) they...

Giants in the Earth discussion: Madmartigan & other Willow characters

If I recall correctly, Madmaritgan was a 20th level Fighter in the old Willow RPG that came out with the movie. Of course, it makes the end battle seem somewhat less climatic when you realize that General Kael was only 12th.

Kuo-toa Love - or how do you like your fish?

Maybe I'm the only one that likes Kuo-toa. And part of that is the Shadow Over Innsmouth. I like sahaguin too, and locanth... well, I've never used them but actually just had an idea for them so I might use them in the near future. (Its an underwater portage point in the Sunless Sea.)...

    Ruling Ambient Light

I think heavy foilage still carries a 30% miss chance. Concealment doesn't stack, does it? Like if you were in Light Undergrowth (20% miss chance) in shadowy conditions (20% miss chance); if you have half-concealment from one thing and half from something else, do you call that full...

    Ruling Ambient Light

Seeings how half concealment is a 20% miss chance, I guess that works. Personally I never liked half concealment being 20% and full being 50%. It just seems like there'd be a better way to phrase it. Something being "half-concealed" and a "50% miss chance" is just a natural assumption to make.

    D&D 4E I'm not gonna do 4E

Actually, the way we came to it was to take my idea for Final Fantasy D&D-- which was to times everything by 10,000-- and and tone it down to something that wasn't so grossly overpowered.

    D&D 4E I'm not gonna do 4E

My group's already playing 4e. (It's just like 3e but we times everything by 1000. My fighter has a 23,000 Armor Class. Beat that, sniz-nitches.) Edited to correct the spelling of "sniz-nitches".

    Evard's Black Tentacles

My group does damage on the initial grapple check, though I can't remember that's something we adopted to save time or if its actually how the rule works. Though it's probably covered in the book and SRD. If they fail their grapple check on their action, they are still grappled but don't take...

    Blind Characters

I was going to mention that feat Darklone, and ask if it had ever made it to 3.5. (If is hasn't, but I had a player who wanted to play a blind character, I'd probably allow it.) I've thought about blind characters. I had one in 2ed, but that was when my old GM was allowing every one to play...

Can You Guys Help Me Get My Head Around Chaotic Neutral? Now with Bonus Material!

I had the day off today, and ended up watching PotC1. Cap'n Jack's line near the end was a fair if laconic description of (at least one type) of CN. "They did what was right by them. Can't expect anything more. That said, I think the idea of a CN place is fairly easy to conjure, just going by...

    Illusions and darkness

Yeah, illusionary lamps always bugged me too. What about an illusion with thermal elements, would an illusionary campfire ward off frostbite? For me, I like it to all come down to a few easy to remember truisms, and the one for illusions is Illusions Aren't Real. As a player of an illusionist...

    D&D rules bloat

The defining trait of "rules-bloat" for me were the number of blatantly contradictory rules that were coming out in various 2e supplements. I don't use all the 3.5 material (mainly because I don't own it), but I still feel its a pretty coherent system. Supplements tend to add more options or...

    the evolution of the kenku

Yeah. For my money, the kenku would have to be the right hand man of a Bullywug crimelord. (This dovetails nicely with my idea for a bullywug pirate ship called Kermit's Revenge. The first mate is a bugbear bard.)

Do Illusions show up in mirrors?

Do they? I thought on a successful save you recognize a figment to be an illusion, but you can still see what its doing. For my group, figments are the goto for cheap special effects. We ruled it that if you save against a figment it becomes partially transparent, just so Silent Image...

Can You Guys Help Me Get My Head Around Chaotic Neutral? Now with Bonus Material!

On the one hand, a chaotic society sounds a lot like Vegas. You can do pretty much whatever you want, everything's always going on, its food and games and spectacle and all manner of earthly delights. On the other hand, its hard not to think of the powers of Vegas as strongly LE-style...

    the evolution of the kenku

I like the new Kenku, even though (or maybe because) they remind me of this guy: Blimey.
