    What Do Skill Ranks *Mean*?

At the same time, a 20th level character with a 1 skill in woodworking isn't going to be any better at it than anybody else. A good measure might be to look at the DCs for the skills. If 15 is Average Difficulty, a character with 5 ranks will succeed about half the time. (Also, ranks are less...

Learning to Love TPKs: A High Risk Variant

You might be talking about something like this from Tresure Tables. Most encounters should have some method of continuing even if the party fails.

    Intimidate

    3) Shaken is only a -2, and its only for one round. 8) Frightened stipulates that a creature who cannot flee will fight as if Shaken. (But being surrounded by a party is pretty much a death sentence for a humanoid anyway, even without a -2 to hit.)

    Monster Skins

I'd make it a a +2 circumstance bonus like a masterwork item, and then I'd let them enchant it to a +5 enchancement at a reduced cost, say 75-50% of the usual price of a Cloak of Elvenkind (since that'd basically be what it functions like). Or allow a reduced cost for any shadow magic they...

Can't get my head around the Hide skill

I'd agree with this. A set penalty to a DC in an open-ended skill system makes "impossible" a relative term. (Personally, I think "You Can't" is a better modifier for Impossible, countered only by a "Oh Yes I Can" class ability or feat.) A lot of how Hide works depends on when you make the...

Can't get my head around the Hide skill

True dat. However, for the purposes of that attack, the opponent who failed his Spot check would be considered unaware of you. I'm guessing now, but I think he'd be flat-footed towards the Hider until his next action, which really wouldn't matter unless he triggered an AoO. I guess if you're...

    Ridiculous amount of buffs

"Extraordinary", but the point you make is a good one.

Can't get my head around the Hide skill

SRD: "Your Hide check is opposed by the Spot check of anyone who might see you." My group's take on this is you make your Hide check, and then as people come along they make Spots check trying to beat the DC set by your Hide check. So you'd just make the one Hide check. (Another...

    Ridiculous amount of buffs

This is getting to be one long wall.

New Names for Undead, Fiends, and Abberation for a Post-Apocalytpic game

I always like the term The Restless Dead. In a Lovecraft influenced game, aberrations could go by names like Elder Spawn. Or, more collequially, by whatever they look like. "That's the problem with the Fell Swamp, all the dang squid-lizards."

    Party Magic Pool

Shadowrun players might remember Availabilty and Street Index, which were used to determine how difficult items are to find and how much they cost on the street. A Predator II heavy pistol might have a 550 nuyen MSRP, but they are so common that they had a Street Index of .5, meaning they went...

    D&D 3.x Monk 3.5

I don't have a source either, but the monk in my group has Whirling Steel Strike, which lets him use a long sword as a monk weapon. They might be Eberron feats.

    Ridiculous amount of buffs

I agree. I think the problem is most dungeons are treated as static environments. The pcs clean out rooms 1-3 and leave, because they can come back tomorrow and pick it back up at room 4 and nothing will have changed, or they can camp in room 3 and pick it right back up tomorrow. The only...

    Sunrod Questions

My group always treats them like glowsticks. "Crack a sunrod" as the saying goes.

    Giant Task

I'm not sure about Savage Species, but I know the Ettin in the MM gets Superior Two-Weapon Fighting as a Special Quality rather than as a feat.

    D&D 3.x Monk 3.5

I find when I can't beat DR, or its not really worth it to try, special attacks are the way to go. Improved Trip, Improved Disarm, Grapple; if you can't wound a creature you can at least hobble it so the rest of the group can. Its not all about hit point damage.

    Party Magic Pool

The other thing about the Bronze Griffon is it is usable for 6 hours, twice per week. So even if the group does have a aerial mounted combat character, he's still only going to be using it 1/4 of a day, twice a week. Weigh that against a 10,000gp item, sold for half and split (on average) four...

    Am I a villain?

It seems like most villains like cats. The mummy hated cats, but then he didn't work in the financial sector.

    Beholder's Ray Attacks

I always liked Save or Dies leave a character at 0 hp. It's still scary, but its not a deal-breaker.

    Instant Wizard?

I could almost argue it from the other side; a wizard goes out on the trail and quickly picks up a bunch of skills, learning how to attack vitals and find all manner of complicated traps. As opposed to the rogue who goes wizard and learns how to cast maybe two first level spells a day...
