The last sentence spoils the fun

Our group has a player who tends to overlook or misread spells -- he tends to play sorcerers. He doesn't make these mistakes intentionally, his mind just somehow interprets things differently from the printed word. In a previous campaign, I let him play a sorcerer variant. He had a wider...

    Printing Campaign Documents

I put together a campaign book for one of my worlds a couple years ago, about 300 pages long, but I couldn't afford to have it printed, copies, and bound -- I just gave it in PDF form on CDs to players. One of my players, however, went to Kinko's, had it printed out (double-sided, high quality...

How did you experience the WotC Setting Search

I would also like to see not only Keith's initial 1-page entry, but those of the other 10 winners as well. How much of these "sold the sizzle" of the steak, so to speak, and what phrases proved most evocative in these proposals? These would be, I think, enjoyable to read.

How did you experience the WotC Setting Search

I entered a couple times with different settings. On looking back on the 1-page initial entry, I didn't put the right "feel" to the description -- it was more informational, rather than trying to quickly paint a picture or evoke a feeling. Regardless of whether I wrote the 1-pager the way I...

    [C&C] Why the edition wars?

Although I have not yet picked up a copy of C&C (and indeed, play 3.x), I think the idea of C&C is an extremely good one, and may well represent the opportunity for bringing new players into our hobby. Anything that strengthens the hobby is, in my opinion, A Good Thing.

    GENCON: Where are you staying?

Myself, my son, and two members of our gaming group will be staying at the Crowne Plaza Hotel...

Sad day for Milwaukee gamers: Napoleon's is closing (merged)

Farewell to Napoleon's, and best of luck to its owner. I still remember going there on the Thursday before GenCon in 2000, just a day before getting my hands on a copy of the 3rd edition PHB...they had a copy of the book in the store to look at, but not to buy until that Friday. The atmosphere...

    Tell Me About GENCON...

I thought GenCon registration (and thus housing) opened up on the 14th...Did something change and it got moved forward to Saturday?

    Warhammer RPG release schedule

I just read some of the proofs posted for pages from the upcoming Warhammer FRPG. They look fantastic. One of the pages included the Ratcatcher career, and did that bring back some memories... a pole with 1d10 rats and a "small but vicious dog"...I still remember this from the first edition...

    Tell Me About GENCON...

I have yet to attend GenCon Indy, but I've attended GenCon at Milwaukee numerous times, so hopefully some of these comments are nominally useful... Some games fill up really, really fast, while others never fill up. I know this is a pretty generic comment of limited use, but the popularity of...

Beyond the Crystal Cave - your experiences?

I owned this module at one time, but it vanished at some point along the way...I never had a chance to DM it. I did, however, have a chance to play in it for one evening. I was visiting a friend in a small rural community in Iowa, and he invited me one evening to play D&D with him and his...

    Lovecraft: Hack or Genius?

I just recently started re-reading Lovecraft. I have owned several books of his stories, but have always had difficult "getting into" them. This time around, I forced myself to slow down, take in the whole story, and remain patient. So far, I have been surprised at how good his stories are...

I have enjoyed tremendously the current storyline that continues in issue #99 -- fantastic stuff. I too look forward to #100!

    War Torn Novel results

From what I understand of the messages on the above-mentioned forum, the winner has already been notified but not announced...I may be mis-reading this, but that's my take on it. As the book editor commented regarding the War Torn series, "...All four titles have authors."

    Rant: Midnight Gone Wrong...

Although I've not played in it, the Midnight setting reads like it would require a different form of storytelling than many other campaigns. In some ways, it brings to mind "Dark Sun," wherein water and food were precious, everything was out to eat you, and in the end you were doomed anyway...

"The bridge is destroyed! We're trapped!"

Turn it around. Don't trap the characters, or restrict their movements. Give them a powerful reason why they won't leave the village -- even when they really, really want to escape. Having the elements, or a disaster, or similar event trap the characters provides one sort of tension, but...

    Dragon 328?

I received my issue #328 about 2 weeks ago. According to the Paizo web site, #328 hit newstands as of Jan. 25th...and indeed, several copies showed up on the shelf at a local Barnes & Noble yesterday.

    Dragon #328 - February 2005

March (Dragon #329) preview includes: The Legacy of Beowulf The Petit Tarrasque (And Other Stories) Mesopotamian Mythos Demonomicon of Iggwilf: Pazuzu The only mention of Eberron I saw was in the preview section for next issue: "A Novel Approach: Eberron's Marked for Death."

Eberron - who all submitted to the novel call?

I submitted a story idea to the "War Torn" open call, although I have very few illusions as to my chances of being selected...a lot of potent talent out there. It feels sort of like playing the lottery -- you know you're not going to win, but you still dream for a little bit... My idea...
