    [LPF] Return to Boar's Ridge

"I must admit, I am confused as to what everyone else would prefer. Let's try a different tack. I'm suggesting the southern approach. Is anyone adamantly opposed?" Darvus Andar AC: 16 (15 flat-footed, 11 touch) HP: 11/11 CMB: +5 CMD: 16 Fort: +3 Reflex: +1 Will: +1 Perception: -1 Initiative...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Cosmology

My plan is to merge 4E and 3.x cosmology thusly: The astral sea has all the schtuff in the middle of the great wheel. At the periphery of the astral sea is the wheel itself, with the color veils. The color veils are actually where the River Styx passes through that realm. If you look at the...

D&D 5E (2014) I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

What are you talking about? Transformers was so awesome. Just... so awesome. So... so... Oh God. "DUNGEONS & DRAGONS" "a Michael Bay film"

    The Dumbing Down of RPGs

OMG. I started the game, walked into town, stepped into a bar, and died. Took the cartridge back to Blockbuster and never played a King's Quest again. B-)

    The Dumbing Down of RPGs

Fail forward gives me an excuse to not cancel a campaign halfway through just because my players have one bad fit of rolling. Yes, it's contrived; everything about D&D is contrived so I don't feel there's any sancrosanctity there. Once I ran a pretty gritty GURPS game that ended with a TPK, and...

D&D 5E (2014) I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

Alternatively, they realize that books will not and cannot be a significant revenue stream (compared to other house brands). They exist to support and promulgate the brand and its cross-media push.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition -- Help Me Break the Game!

I agree. I'll even go so far as to say this is an important thread. As a GM, it's a must-read if people take it seriously and offer up real examples.

    [LPF] Return to Boar's Ridge

Darvus Andar, Paladin of Helerion "Apologies, Master Dwarf. The delay is of my own making. Let us set off, then." Darvus Andar AC: 16 (15 flat-footed, 11 touch) HP: 11/11 CMB: +5 CMD: 16 Fort: +3 Reflex: +1 Will: +1 Perception: -1 Initiative: +1 Smite Evil: 1/1 Current Weapon in Hand...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Eldritch Knight vs PF Magus

Watching a PF Magus with nothing but shocking grasp prepared murder every thing in the first round had soured me on the class, but the 5E EK looks a damn sight better than the 3.5 version, which I felt was lackluster.

    [LPF] Return to Boar's Ridge

Darvus Andar, Paladin of Helerion "Good point, uhh... Father? Pastor? Reverend?" Darvus replies as he studies the dirt map again. "But are you willing to chance it with us?" Darvus Andar AC: 16 (15 flat-footed, 11 touch) HP: 11/11 CMB: +5 CMD: 16 Fort: +3 Reflex: +1 Will: +1 Perception: -1...

    The Dumbing Down of RPGs

It isn't magic, but it is also not computable by any means at our current disposal. As this point we leave the area of game theory and enter theoretical neuroscience. No one knows why or how humans can strategize EXPTIME-complete problems that are computationally intractable. EDIT: I suspect...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sweet! My BBEG's are immortal now!

Check out the 8th-level Clone spell. Consider that the clone can be any age. This gets me wondering, what wizard of 17th-level or higher is not going to live forever? Or even stay perpetually young? Every ten years, check yourself out and into a young, virile body. And then there is the...

    The Dumbing Down of RPGs

Combinatorical game theory has been around quite a while. We know that Go is in the same class of complexity as Chess and the Game of Life that mathematically exclude polynomial-time solutions. That is to say, they are some of the hardest to solve problems that exist or CAN exist. Not saying it...

D&D 5E (2014) What are YOU doing for monsters until MM release?

Wow, thank you two very much. You saved me some moolah! I was only interesting in HotDQ for monster stats.

    D&D 5E (2014) Playing with a battlemat but without a grid

I play in a weekly Flames of War game (skirmish level WWII combat), so it's already second nature to me to play on an unmarked terrain board with a tape measure in one hand. I'll have to try this out for D&D.

D&D 5E (2014) What are YOU doing for monsters until MM release?

My players are chomping at the bit to play 5E ASAPOMGWTFBBQ, and they plan to have characters ready for next week's game. BUT... I got no monsters! Even the last playtest packet seems to omit them. I'm picking up HotDQ, so that will hopefully have some creatures, but I'll be limited to that...

    Vow of poverty question

Are you sure? Because I remember them being listed as enhancement and armor bonuses, respectively. EDIT: Ability score improvement is an enhancement bonus, AC bonus is an exalted bonus with a note that it does not stack with any armor bonus.
