WotC Walks Back Some OGL Changes, But Not All

I assume they want data on what is selling.

WotC Walks Back Some OGL Changes, But Not All

That's my point -- they can't achieve any of them unless they can revoke 1.0a.

WotC Walks Back Some OGL Changes, But Not All

Haha that'd be the absolute worst thing they could do!

WotC Walks Back Some OGL Changes, But Not All

Goals: None of these goals are achievable unless Wizards can revoke OGL 1.0a, and no 3PP with any real stake will use an OGL that Wizards can revoke. Now what?

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

They're going to have to address revocation. The precise terms of any new version of the OGL don't matter if Wizards maintains they can revoke versions of the OGL. And unless Wizards can revoke versions of the OGL, they can't meet any of their goals because publishers will just use 1.0a.

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

No, they still seem to think they can revoke OGL 1.0a.

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

Your position is that, because SRD 5.1 was published under OGL 1.0a, a publisher could throw OGL 1.0a in the trash and instead publish their 5e clone under ORC? If your position (as with @pemerton) is that publishers should instead continue to exercise their contractual rights under 1.0a, I...

What do normal royalties look like?

I believe that royalty only applies to PDF sales through One Book Shelf. I can say we never paid Tolkien Enterprises, George RR Martin, Blizzard, or Lucasfilm any 25% royalty for tabletop game rights. OTOH, the royalties started from the first dollar (not $750,000+) and the royalty rate was...

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

Well, I think Wizards of the Coast itself has experience with changing the rules and design approach sufficiently that a large segment of their audience said, "That's not D&D." And they weren't even working under the constraint of simultaneously protecting themselves from copyright infringement...

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

I'd say they want D&D 5e. It's both: the familiar sacred cows I mean mechanics and design space and also the weird gonzo fantasy subgenre that makes D&D unique. Move too far away from either and you get (best case), "It's a good game, very tight design, but it's not D&D."

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

I don't think there will be an "ORC version of 5e." No one knows exactly how much "D&D" a publisher needs to strip out of 5e to be reasonably safe from copyright infringement lawfare, but it seems likely that any publisher with a large enough stake to be a significant competitor to Wizards will...

I think it will be extremely interesting to watch this develop.

Step-by-step instructions for deleting a D&D Beyond account, from the perspective of a (former) user of the "Free" version

I thought we’d get videos of people burning their character sheets or something. The digital age lacks a certain pageantry.

D&D 5E (2024) Have we potentially seen the end of the OneD&D Playtest?

Yeah, I suspect they’re quite happy with all the support for D&D on DMs Guild.

Paizo Announces New Irrevocable Open RPG License To Replace the OGL

Is that a PF2 thing, or a VTT thing? We play 5e on Roll20 and there's, like, no math. You click buttons. That's not because there's "no math" in 5e, though, it's because the software is doing it all.

They're trying to pull the knife out a couple inches, but all that's going to do is spill more blood on the rug.

    D&D 5E (2024) Lifetime boycott of D&D-branded products?

That got me wondering so I went and looked up Ferdinand Porsche and...yeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiikes.

The OGL -- Just What's Going On?

Yeah, if this is real, it won't cut it. Apart from everything else, it states that previously published products will be licensed under 1.0a forever, but anything new must be licensed under 2.0. That's still going to be unacceptable to the big publisher and it still leaves the question of OGL...
