    Spiked Chain Polearm Master ?

If they fit the prereqs, go for it. If they don't fit the prereqs but the combination isn't too powerful, go for it anyway.

Parties screwed without an Int-based PC?

Sorry about that yet again. I've gotten the DC wrong several times and so have taken to doubting myself solely on principle. :) You're right. It is 20 + 1/2 level, which means that even if he had a +5 Int mod, +2 for level, and +5 for training he still could not find any items from a 4th level...

So, about defenses aka. PHB2 defenses feats

Maybe, but that second hit won't kill them either. It'll barely slow them down unless for some reason they're without a Leader and nobody else has any way to get the person a healing surge. It might be bad design, it might not. "Bad" is a value judgement, so impossible to quantify. What it...

Reflections on the Barbarian and Avenger

In the three fights we had with a 4th level Avenger in the party (pursuit style), it was easy for the enemy to avoid triggering the avenger's bonus damage, but that meant standing there and getting hit by a striker who was (usually) rolling twice to attack. The second part of their power...

    That's exactly what we're doing. :)

So, about defenses aka. PHB2 defenses feats

Take a closer look at the epic destinies. Most characters will get power boosts when they're first knocked to 0 hit points. Very few of them will actually hit 0 for more than a microsecond.

Parties screwed without an Int-based PC?

I misquoted the rule. It is DC 15 + 1/2 level. Even that doesn't make it guaranteed at higher levels, which means a party needs someone heavily focused on Arcana (or Int-based and trained) in order to find all of the parcels that the balance of the system assumes they have. I'm fine with low...

So, about defenses aka. PHB2 defenses feats

Just thought I should point out that you don't die when he hits you. You're knocked to 0 hit points. At epic level that might actually make you more powerful. Have you run an epic level campaign? I have, and I can tell you with no fear of uncertainty that PCs are a heck of alot more resilient...

Parties screwed without an Int-based PC?

We're bumping the campaign to 11th level, which has a side effect of making take 10 not work all the time. Rather than change the characters, we're just dropping the need for Detect Magic in order to maintain the party's expected power level through treasure parcels. It will still exist as a...

Parties screwed without an Int-based PC?

They're 4th level. I probably misremembered his bonus as well. It's probably +8 (5/training, 2/level, 1/stat). So bags aren't really an option. The Shaman isn't trained in Arcana, though I'm not sure what he chose instead. Probably skills that enhance his high attributes rather than rely on weak...

Cool. So opinion isn't as one-sided as it appeared at first. Thanks folks!

Parties screwed without an Int-based PC?

He's not specialized in Perception, he just has the skill. And he gave up other character options to do it. True, though I'm not going to force a deity choice on the player. I'm looking to fill what I see as a weakness in the rules, not lay down the Hand of GM Power on who plays what. NPCs...

Parties screwed without an Int-based PC?

So they should be bad at what their class does in order to bump a single skill? I'd also take that to mean they're screwed without an int-based PC.

Parties screwed without an Int-based PC?

It specifically spells out how you find magic items, and Perception is not a part of that equation. That said, if you want to interpret it that way and not consider it a house rule, have fun. My interpretation differs. I'm following the rules in the Skill chapter. There are no "appraise"...

Parties screwed without an Int-based PC?

Numerically they're the same thing. A bonus feat enhances the PC (effectively +4 to detect magic checks for this character), leaving the world unchanged should a new character come in. A house rule changing all DCs has farther reaching ramifications if someone decides to play an int-based...

Parties screwed without an Int-based PC?

That's one way to work it, though it'd also be a house rule. You can't take 20 with sensing magic. Well, I guess you could, but it would require 20 extended rests because you can't try again until you've had one. And you could find out all of an item's properties after fiddling with it for a...

    Censure of Retribution question (Avenger)

I agree with them. Each oath is a separate entity, and if the target changes, the bonuses no longer apply.

Parties screwed without an Int-based PC?

The current party in our game is a Warden, Avenger, Invoker, and Shaman. None of them are Int-based. It didn't strike me until after their second fight that they're going to be seriously hurting for magic items after a couple of adventures because their odds of walking past magic items are...
