    Scaling Encounters

Sorry, I meant experienced with the system you're running (3.5 in this case). I didn't mean to come off like a condiscending jerk. I'm not terribly experienced with 3.5 or 3.0 in specific and whenever I follow their recipe for treasure & experience things go horribly awry... either players get...

    Scaling Encounters

Wow thats complicated... and totally not needed unless you're an unexperienced GM. The overall point is that players are challenged enough to burn through 20% of their resources (I find far less by the book CRs... closer to 10% with sometimes a crit making it 30-80%... averages I guess) and...

    It's a Wand! It's a Crossbow Bolt! It's a Floor Wax!

I think part of the point of averages is that "on average" you'll get X results. It's not more or less likely to go over. You're just as likely going to roll 5 numbers above 10 in a row as 5 numbers below 10 in a row. It's only when you get into multiple dice, like 2d10 that the results are...

[Artificer] UMD with multiple spells on the same scroll & when to make the roll

I'm still following this... just not a whole lot of imput I can offer rules wise (what does RAW mean? Rules as Written? odd term). Of the two methods, one role for multiple spells feels, in my heart of hearts, cheesy. I'm a GM normally - but a player here. I think rolling for each spell would...

Am I breaking any rules with this tactic?

The suprise round would start once the teleport ended, so the Wizard would get to act (unless teleport has some sort of recovery). You don't spend your suprise round before an enemy knows you're there. Thats just before combat.

Appraise - Realism at What Cost?

Never seen that before in any game from 1e t 3.5e and other systems. The merchant just always knows unless you're purposefully trying to trick or bluff him. Sounds like a nice idea if the group is into playing "Merchant: The Shopping". Most groups I've been a part of really don't want to...

Am I breaking any rules with this tactic?

True that. It's all based on sitation. Based on my experience with multiple GMs, own inclinations (I have to catch myself at times) and RPG.Net and other forums, it seems that like video games, it's common for a GM to just play up even surprised monsters/opponents as pretty much combat ready...

Am I breaking any rules with this tactic?

I agree. 1 surprise is all you need. Lets take Modern for example on how this goes: 1. sneak up to drug house. You know the dealers are armed and dangerous killers. 2. Kick in the door, guns out, taking in the situation and scanning whats going on. 3. The dealers are on the couch watching TV...

Appraise - Realism at What Cost?

I hope nobody in our party has that skill. Our GM just tells us the value when we get it. He sees it like this: "We're not playing Merchant the Trading, so lets just get on with the game" - in other words, it doesn't really add anything for us to try and roll dice to get good prices with...

Am I breaking any rules with this tactic?

I'm missing something, but people are assuming that just because enemies are known that combat starts. So long as the opponents are unaware, players can continue to sneak around doing whatever they like. This is how assassains sneak up and prepare for combat (with guns or poison or blades)...

Which race fits this class or vise versa?

A bonus to Cha doesn't really do much for an Artificer. +2 to Cha would result in a +1 bonus to UMD. ::shrugs:: Forgive me if I'm not fighting tooth, nail and character race/concept for a +1 to a skill. Int is their primary stat, determining their infusions and skill points. As usual Dex...

    Defending Bow?

It's on a table for melee items, not ranged weapons. ::shrugs:: I don't agree, but I see the logic there.

[Artificer] UMD with multiple spells on the same scroll & when to make the roll

So you think you only roll once for each spell on a scroll, per day, rather than for each itteration of a spell on a scroll?

[Artificer] UMD with multiple spells on the same scroll & when to make the roll

Pretty much what I thought. So if you failed on one of your 5 CLW's, then you flubbed it and have nothing? see: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=287579&page=1&pp=30 post #30. The design team for Eberron have stated that a spell is innately whatever school/type that it came from...

    It's a Wand! It's a Crossbow Bolt! It's a Floor Wax!

    No, the average uses in this method is 50. On average you'll roll a 1 on a d20 every 20 times. On average you'll roll a 1 on a d12 every 12 times. On average you'll roll a 1 on a d10 every 10 times. On average you'll roll a 1 on a d8 ever 8 times. So on average, you'll roll a 1 on each...

    It's a Wand! It's a Crossbow Bolt! It's a Floor Wax!

And you could have a situation where a wand degrades on it's first use and only lasts for 13 uses total. It's a bit of risk, a bit of randomness and tension and no bookkeeping. Why? Just apply the same logic as using one charge and roll twice. Either both at once or one after another. Each 1...

[Artificer] UMD with multiple spells on the same scroll & when to make the roll

Say, for example, I am a 2nd level Artificer who wants to scribe 5 Cure Light Wounds onto a scroll within a day. Now, I don't have the spell, so do I have to roll UMD for each time I'm scribing the spell onto the scroll (5x) or just once to get the spell emulation right? Also, do I only roll...

Creating a Scroll, Potion or other item and Min. Time

If thats how it's worded, then that would make perfect sense. Well thanks for the input :)

    Defending Bow?

I could see allowing it on a few levels. Either using it to defend like the above potion mentioned. It could also create a sort of aura of fear or magnificance or something and just make it that much harder to strike. It would really be up to the GM to add that sort of flavour and determine if...

Creating a Scroll, Potion or other item and Min. Time

Sounds something like that. I don't have my Eberron book on me so I can't quote exact wording. If a potion is always a minimum of 8 hours, how about other items like Scrolls? Are they always a minimum of 8 hours as well? Normally a Feat lets you alter/bypass/adjust a rule and allow you to do...
