I really hope both my 4e groups choose to convert to 5e… …because it turns out my subscription to online 4e tools auto-renews in a week. Dang it. Maybe they'll decide quickly!

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

To address the content and not the sarcasm: certainly lots of things differentiate a character, from race and class to skills, feats, backgrounds and clever character history. The identical starting stats bother me too, though, breaking my suspension of disbelief. Everyone starting with...

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

Overgeeked, there is a polite way to disagree, and instead you're ignoring it in favor of being as pugnacious and confrontative as you can be. Cut it out. I've got no patience for the sarcasm, and if you do it again to anyone I'm booting you from the thread. Someone disagreeing with you is not...

    D&D 5E (2014) A Glimpse Of High-Level Play

Tonight I'm testing how well low-lvl monsters threaten high-lvl characters due to bounded accuracy. 15th lvl PCs may run across gnolls and their cohorts. If so, we'll see how well charging PCs fair against a whole mess of archers.

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

I think 5e point buy is pretty fast. By eliminating options above 15, I'm finding fewer options for egregious min-maxing.

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

Turns out to be fun, and tends to be really good for team building around the table as people negotiate to get the character they want. I'd never do it for a short game, but our campaigns tend to last 5-15 years, so it makes for a nice start. As always, YMMV. This is a really foreign concept to...

D&D 5E (2014) Player characters as heirs and eventually rulers

Sabathius, that's flat-out superb. I'm reminded of the risk of centering a campaign around just one or two PCs, and then their retainers. You run the risk of (a) paying too much attention to only one player, (b) running into problems if that player leaves the game, and (c) being tempted not to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

We had the opposite -- someone who complained his dice rolls were always awful and complained about it regularly. With one noted exception (six failed 4e saving throws in a row), he was wrong and they were exactly as good or bad as anyone else's, but he sure didn't see it that way. I felt for...

D&D 5E (2014) Warlock: Great Old One Patron Familiar

We're making the familiar in my game a creature consisting of sentient rumors, secrets, gossip and starlight. Sure, it may look like a bird, but it remembers what it hears and can parrot it back on command.

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

Admin here. I'll say it again, more bluntly. Overgeeked, Sacrosanct, please let it go. I don't want this thread derailed because you're arguing and insulting each other. It's fine to disagree, but I'm not going to have any patience with insults or snideness from anyone. Time to take a deep...

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

EDIT: Admin hat on: Folks, please ratchet down the animosity and accusations. It's cool if you don't agree with one another, and feel free to discuss the topic, but insults and rudeness just make the thread less fun to read. Overgeeked, here's a stupid question. In your opinion, would your...

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

Zustiur, my suggestion is a little different (in that I'm suggesting breaking apart the arrays and using all the numbers), but I really like your option as well. That's cool, and perfectly fair.

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

While we're armchair-quarterbacking this -- here's a pretty good example of good and problematic ways to ask DMs about rules. GOOD: ask privately and politely, in such a way that you aren't challenging their authority in front of the other players. PROBLEMATIC: ask publicly and using a lot of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

One of the most interesting stat generation ideas I've ever seen I heard about here on this board. Get everyone together at the table. Then everyone rolls six ability scores using 4d6 drop 1, and all of those scores go up on a whiteboard in numerical order (not as sets). Then - and this is the...

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

I've told my players "don't sweat the hour-long rest. Sometimes rests may be shorter; if there's a clear, logical, longish break between scenes when you aren't in danger, I'll usually count it as a short rest." I'm guessing this GM prefers a system where the PC resources are really strained to...

D&D 5E (2014) Supplemental books: Why the compulsion to buy and use, but complain about it?

Yeah. I love a themed game like "halfling musketeers," but I do like to know the theme.

    D&D 5E (2014) Array v 4d6: Punishment? Or overlooked data

I have a weird personal divide: I love rolling my character stats, but the game generally plays better when it's point-buy, so it's what I encourage as a GM.

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

On the plus side, he won't have to wait long before his warlock has perished and he can bring in a new PC! :D

D&D 5E (2014) Supplemental books: Why the compulsion to buy and use, but complain about it?

There is no world, real or imaginary, where this is not absurdly rude. You are no longer invited to post in this thread.

D&D 5E (2014) DM purposely gimping my Warlock

I'd encourage you not to drag edition warring into this, please. I'm a huge fan of earlier editions' playstyle, and I don't see any of that here (or of the original poster saying that they're necessarily a fan of 4e's playstyle.) To me it really seems more of a case of "I want to play a...
