D&D General Let He Who Is Without Sin Cast the First Magic Missile: Why Gygax Still Matters to Me

I wasn't being cute. The man literally wrote a racist poem. I can't even give you the title here. It will be flagged.

D&D General Let He Who Is Without Sin Cast the First Magic Missile: Why Gygax Still Matters to Me

Lovecraft wrote racist poetry. That is proper dedication to racism. It was a feature of his character as a person. Yes, we can look at him in the context of his time, but when we do so, don't give him a pass, because in a sense it gives those times a pass.

D&D General Let He Who Is Without Sin Cast the First Magic Missile: Why Gygax Still Matters to Me

People need to stop claiming there is no evidence when people keep responding, again and again, with said evidence.

D&D General Let He Who Is Without Sin Cast the First Magic Missile: Why Gygax Still Matters to Me

So for context, I am a fan of Lovecraft. Got to attend Necronomicon in providence and even presented for the Armitage Symposium, dealing with Lovercraft's cosmicism as TTRPG narrative backdrop. When we appreciate the work of "problematic" artists, we can feel a need to defend our appreciation...

Looking for review resources: Crowfunding after reports

So I am curious. Are there existing good resources online dealing specifically with TTRPG crowdfunding? We see all these projects draw a lot of eyes during the funding rush, but rarely do I see much discourse on post fulfillment unless something goes disastrously wrong. The kinda info I would...

Electric Car Ownership - Any Experiences?

Anecdotal: A friend had a hybrid, not going into the model. One night while it was charging beside their home overnight the battery caught fire. The fire spread to their home. Everyone was able to get out ok and the house was able to be repaired. The lawsuit stalled when the slagged remains of...

D&D 5E (2024) Command is the Perfect Encapsulation of Everything I Don't Like About 5.5e

Amen. Look, if you have made your point to your satisfaction as clearly as you think you8 can, it is often better for your own mental health to just call it a day.

D&D 5E (2024) Command is the Perfect Encapsulation of Everything I Don't Like About 5.5e

Mixed feelings on this. At one table, you get people pushing into the margins to do fun and creative things. At another table, you get people ruthlessly trying to exploit edge cases and interactions to wring every drop of power out of systems. Which one you may appreciate is going to be about...

    D&D 5E (2024) So IS it a new edition?

So on reflection, and looking back at going through both edition changes and edition updates, I feel this is an edition update. It works like this: Mechanically, can I make older books work with the newer material? So say 3rd to 3.5, I can. Some things wont work or wont be worth it, but the...

D&D General Classic Adventure Themed Dice Sets From Beadle & Grimm's

A part of me is oddly happy that these are so expensive. It signals to me that I'm not the market for them and not get too worked up about it. It's a whale product.

Is there any genre or theme that the TTRPG medium does not work for?

Roleplay as an exercise definitely has applications to help students learn about history.

Is there any genre or theme that the TTRPG medium does not work for?

This is an assumption that rules emulation is the primary goal for an rpg, which is a very contentious issue. For me, based on the initial posting, my concern is just thematic exploration, and how well the medium of interplay that rpgs are allows for such explorations.

Is there any genre or theme that the TTRPG medium does not work for?

I think a more useful answer is this: As a GM, there are themes I would not try to explore through an RPG.

Is there any genre or theme that the TTRPG medium does not work for?

No more than is there any genre or theme that we cannot discuss. There is only degrees of difficulty in doing so.

D&D 5E (2014) Players, would you play in a multi-year campaign that used only the 5.1 SRD?

I don't know if I would want to play a multi year campaign of any one game. Too many choices.
