Is WotC Wrong? - Shield Other and Damage Reduction

It depends on if the damage is split before or after the subject of the spell takes it. WotC seems to be implying the "forcefield" reading of the spell, incoming damage is split before it gets to DR. If you interpret the spell as the damage is split after it is taken (after it gets through the...

Is WotC Wrong? - Shield Other and Damage Reduction

I think how you would split the damage depends on how you think Shield Other works. If it's outside the character's body (similar to a forcefield), then the spell takes half the incoming damage and transfers it to the caster, the other half goes to the character who then applies his DR. If its...

    The Swallow Whole ability

As do I, but I think most of the time the thing that swallows the guy ends up dead anyway... or the party kills it and cuts him out. I remember having a similar discussion with some friends when the Mutation rules came out for Shadowrun (I think in the original CalFree State book). I wasn't...

    The Swallow Whole ability

Frank, I would like to salute that heroic defense of what is otherwise kind of a dumb rule.

Poor will saves pummeling the opposition

Monstrous Humanoids have pretty good will saves for one. Protection from Good (Evil, Law, Chaos, whatever the party is) protects from mental control, and as a 1 min per level, 1st level spell, even a guy with one level in a casting class can protect somebody for ten rounds. Or its a cheap...

    Rhodin Characters for Arcana Evolved

I was actually thinking of using three types; goatfolk from the MM3, rhodin from AE, and khemru from Wargods, statted for d20. Superficially, they're all pretty similar in that they're goat people. Mechanically, goatfolk are 3HD Monstrous Humanoids with a +1 LA, rhodin are a +0 LA with no...

Would blending rangers and barbarians fix what is wrong with barbarians?

I played a Bar/Ran in a two-shot in a friend of mine's game. It was a little beefier than the usual ranger, but still had plenty of skills and was pretty stealthy. (And I could sneak along at the same speed the dwarf walked.)

    A Vulture-like race

Actually, when I statted them out as Nekharu for my Wargods of Aegyptus crossover, I gave them a +2 Int, -2 Str and darkvision. But the effect was much the same.

The Best Core only Warrior builds?

I think the obvious choice here is to go Barbarian/Paladin. :)

The Best Core only Warrior builds?

I playing a Fighter/Barbarian right now and I'm pretty happy with the way its turning out, but a lot of that's feats more than class abs. (Though, I must say Uncanny Dodge has saved portions of my butt a few times against ambushing sneak attackers.) Rage is okay but I hardly ever use it. Fast...

    A Vulture-like race

I'm wondering if there are any Vulture-like humanoids in D&D, similar to the Harrids of AE. Something like this:

Appropriate Boss bad guy for my group?

I'd use this for a quick and dirty comparison.

    projectile weapons and thrown weapons

Stone Giants with Far Shot would have a range increment of 360' for their Rock Throwing. That's not bad. It puts their max range at a little shy of a third of a mile.

Entangle - A Little Too Strong For A 1st Level Spell?

My main beef with Entangle is the same beef I have with Web, even if you make your save you're still hosed, just hosed to a lesser degree. If Web is a 2nd level spell, it makes sense Entangle is a 1st, because even though it has a larger AoE and longer range, it's situational and a little...

    Rhodin Characters for Arcana Evolved

Racial bonuses aren't really spelled out for these guys. Their stats seem to imply a +2 to Str and a -2 to Wis, but I'm wondering if this was listed somewhere. Also, I noticed that while the text didn't change from the Diamond Throne book to the AE description, the artwork did; in the DT book...

    Ice Castle from Frostburn

That's a more literal interpretation that I'd go for. Under Conjuration it says "It must arrive in an open location on a surface capable of supporting it," and under the Summon Monster entry it says, "Creatures cannot be summoned into an environment that cannot support them." To me, it's...

    Skeletons, Zombies, and Special Abilities

The Hydra gets a lot of attacks, but I don't see any SQ's that would transfer over to its undead form. It gives me the feeling that the whole (ex) abilities in the Special Qualities line is a little inconsistent. The hydra gets an attack per head at no penalty, but no corresponding Quality...

    TV: Supernatural and Heroes

Shadowrun 3e. What about Star Wars? SR3. Wild West? SR3. I'm just broken that way.

    Ice Castle from Frostburn

Flight is fine, the empty air is capable of supporting those creatures. (If they have a Fly move, you can conjuring them flying.) The rule is just there so people don't drop whales on people, or use them to block dungeon passages.

    Arcana Evolved with another setting

I worry less about "balance" these days. I don't mind throwing all the classes together and letting economic forces do the rest. If Warmains are a weaker class, fewer people will play them but I might still use them to make npcs (not everybody in the world is going to be optimized) and if...
