Low Magic Setting, High Magic Characters

I have a setting which is something of a reaction to this sort of thing. In this setting, the average fully-trained adult is the equivalent of a level 3 character. The players started as recent graduates at level 1. Roughly fifth level characters are considered to be particularly skilled -...

    D&D 5E (2014) Grappling with Mirror Image

A point here - being grappled does not mean that you've been grabbed by the wrist. For a start, there are creatures without wrists which are not immune to grapple. I tend to think that it means someone has a solid grip on you - for a humanoid example, imagine if someone had a solid grip on the...

Bet on Sunday’s ‘surprise’ D&D announcement

I'm only voting for planescape because that's what I hope will happen :-)

What is missing in 5E that you had in other editions?

I find it interesting that the gaming group I play with who least liked 4e have adopted bloodied as a soft condition (in the sense that with PCs and a lot of creatures, "lost half their hit points" is a thing that you can imagine being able to work out. "How's it looking" is always a question...

Kate Welch is WotC's New D&D Designer

There are also a few comments about character creation and other things tangential to design that I thought very promising. But this is based on a quick google and reading only a couple of things that came up. Good material that shows real thought into how people have fun with their characters...

Kate Welch is WotC's New D&D Designer

So, wait. The D&D team is growing now? I thought it only ever shrunk or maintained size ;-) More seriously, this is great news. A little quick googling suggests she'll be an asset.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E Homebrew Magic System and Class

Some more thoughts on balancing: Your 30mp/level doesn't respect the tiering of magic. If you look at existing spells, levels 1 and 2 are comparable for their power rating - a 2nd level spell is often around twice the effective power of a level 1 spell, give or take. 3rd level spells - which you...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5E Homebrew Magic System and Class

Hmm. I think you need to rethink a few things in your balancing. Some examples built with your material: Greater Greater Invisibility Target: Creature (1) Range: Touch (0) Challenge: Saving throw for no damage (1) Effects: 1d4 healing (1) Status Effects: Invisible 10 rounds (10)...

D&D 5E (2014) So my party decided to adopt an owlbear (and the way I'm running it might be useful to others)

I am reasonably certain I can promise that my players will ensure that happens. I'm looking forward to it. There are two reasons there. Firstly, it's always going to trail behind the party in terms of AC and HP. It's a ferocious, unreasonably aggressive creature. It needs to act that way...

D&D 5E (2014) So my party decided to adopt an owlbear (and the way I'm running it might be useful to others)

Well, I say "Adopt". What actually happened is they camped outside a cave, killed the owlbear that ran out to attack them, nosed about in the cave stealthily, completely ignored the carvings and hints of habitation and managed to steal an owlbear egg from under the other parent. This is exactly...

D&D 5E (2014) One of my players screwed up. Hard. How do I make it fun without doing a tpk? LMoP

IIRC from LMoP, the flameskull is bound by ancient orders. Did the party take it out of the cavern it was in? Maybe its first objective will be to get back there, and all it does is melt the backpack and streak away to the forge cavern, cackling things like "Home" and "Tend the fires". You...

    D&D 5E (2014) Considering a little rule tweak

I tend to run campaigns with a cadence - there are periods when the players tend to fight a few big threats and can mostly control when they rest, and there are periods of many small and large fights where controlling their resting is often impossible. I want my players to be challenged, but I...

D&D 5E (2014) Xanathar's Guide is excellent... and I'm not sure how I feel about that.

A number of the Elemental Evil spells were updated, too - there has been a whole set of errata for them. Printing them in XgtE also helps a little with the PHB+1 ruling that AL uses and that's recommended for a lot of DMs. I think that makes it a bit less of a reprint and more an update (which...

D&D 5E (2014) Xanathar's Guide is excellent... and I'm not sure how I feel about that.

I honestly don't get that at all. The power curve fits very well within the established range in the PHB. Many of the subclasses err on the side of theme over pure mechanics, and I'm fine with that. I don't see any of them as noticeably under or over powered.

D&D 5E (2014) Xanathar's Guide is excellent... and I'm not sure how I feel about that.

Well, speaking as someone who likes both 5e and the current release schedule... I think even I would get annoyed if we had three or four small updates like this without getting an updated core book. But that's definitely a problem for future me - 5.1e will keep me happy for a long while yet ;-)

D&D 5E (2014) Xanathar's Guide is excellent... and I'm not sure how I feel about that.

So, okay. I've seen some people on forums that didn't like Xanathar's Guide. Fine. I personally think that it's an excellent book, and I will explain a few things: 1) The first pages have a very good collection of clarifications of the rules that have come up a number of times with new players...

    D&D 5E (2014) Keen Weapons in 5th Edition?

So this idea came into my head for a "Keen" weapon - that is, a slightly-sentient weapon that is extremely keen on doing lots of damage to someone: Weapon (any weapon that does slashing damage), rare, requires attunement This weapon was made to cut things and it is extremely eager to do so. It...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Get Better At Skills With These Feats

I think free choice makes a big difference in terms of power, to be honest. I'd definitely still pick it for a number of builds. However, the language on the three spell-granting feats could do with being tightened up; the actual difference between them and Magic Initiate is that with Magic...

    D&D 5E (2014) Idea for a new feat - Martial Flexibility

All the implementations of this idea seem to be fairly complex mechanically, and prone to minmaxing. I like the idea of flexibility, but I'd rather go with something like this: Martial finesse Pre-requisite: Str 13 Increase your Strength or Dexterity by 1 point (to a maximum of 20) When you...

D&D 5E (2014) Surprisingly Lethal Side Effect of Multiattack

I tend to try to work out what the monsters would do. Most creatures will switch targets if someone goes down, because they feel threatened by them. There are two cases where I would have the monsters actually attack damaged enemies: 1) Anything motivated by hunger that doesn't know about or...
