D&D 5E (2014) Flat math ability scores vs roleplay considerations

I strongly doubt the level 10 base attack of +5 will be doubled by level 20 because it started at a base +3 at level 1. Extrapolating to level 20 it might increase to a base +7 for fighters... Regardless, the more I think about it the less I like 19-20 being easily reached by PCs. I'm becoming...

D&D 5E (2014) Flat math ability scores vs roleplay considerations

In the latest packet I see they have an optional point buy system which seems to cap at 15, not the expected 18. I personally find this very interesting, and my initial thoughts are I like it.

D&D 5E (2014) Flat math ability scores vs roleplay considerations

One of the consequences of the new flat math / emphasis on ability scores is that in D&DN the scores are an amalgamation of raw talent and developed skill. Fine so far? Good. Well now I've got a wee problem, stats go up by level and naturally the prime stat is going to approach the 20 ceiling...

D&D 5E (2014) Traditional or Historial Arms and Armor

I'm happy to see some out-dated armours in the table if they support world-building (past eras and cheaper types for mass production). The armour table should not just be about the PCs but also tell a tale. I've heard it mentioned but I would like to see a more granular hierarchy of armours in...

Expertise Dice Not Necessarily Fighter Exclusive

Oh I don't know. fighters eventually getting 5 attacks per 2 rounds, compared to pal/rgr getting 2 per 1, compared to cle/thf/wiz getting 1 per 1. It was pretty defining if you ask me. With weapon spec the fighter was getting 3 per 2 at 1st level - that was noticeable to the other players & DM I...

    Mental saves

Wait a sec, are we saying that wise people are the bravest?? Animals are excellent examples of wise beings, they calculate capabilities in a split second and have no compunction in backing down if it isn't worth it. A sense of shame doesn't enter the picture. Humans on the other hand can...

Expertise Dice Not Necessarily Fighter Exclusive

An obvious option is to grant fewer maneuvers and smaller dice pools to the Rgr/Pal/Barb and have their progression lag behind the fighter. This would establish the fighter as the preeminent combatant. You could have variations based on class, for example the barbarian raging would lose all...

Expertise Dice Not Necessarily Fighter Exclusive

I had a 3E Paladin with power attack and combat expertise and it was really cool to be able to opt for power or defence as the combat ebbed and flowed. That to me was a better level of combat abstraction than the default 'hit/miss' set-up. However it chewed up a chunk of my options for character...

Expertise Dice Not Necessarily Fighter Exclusive

When did the Paladin receive spells? In early editions the campaign was likely over before that happened, and in 3E they were definitely weak spell casters compared to the Cleric - but that was an aberrant design as I saw the Cleric routinely out-fight the fighter! I'm not against Paladin...

Rolling for Ability Scores or Point Buy

I'm all for giving players the option to roll, stat array or point buy as they choose. So long as the maths is equal it comes down to preference. I like 4d6dl as the baseline, but would like an easier/harder option slider with array/point buy equivalents. Personally I like arrays.

Expertise Dice Not Necessarily Fighter Exclusive

Oh the "signs" are merely what's been posted right at the beginning of this thread. I don't see 'time devoted to non-martial studies' as being very convincing for a couple of reasons. Firstly it doesn't play out in game time nor in back story. A typical Paladin may attend lessons at a seminary...

Expertise Dice Not Necessarily Fighter Exclusive

AD&D fighters were just as heavily armoured - there was big incentive to go platemail as soon as you could afford it for almost all melee classes who were proficient. The magical stuff was all based around the LG code, idealized chivalry and battling evil. But that said the Paladin was...

Expertise Dice Not Necessarily Fighter Exclusive

I really really hope they're not going to pull the Paladin even further away from it's martial roots. Yes yes there's divine this and that, but the underlying picture is a heavily armed & armoured warrior. I don't want to see it end up like some lumbering wooden combatant casting magic smites.

    D&D 5E (2014) Ability Scores in 5e

Sure an NPC can react poorly to an uncouth character, but the player should not expect to easily control a social situation when their character has poor social skills. The player should not try to misconstrue a penalty as a bonus. Frankly I'm all for cha being the stat that governs fear...

    Mental saves

There seems to be problem attaching fear to wisdom, in that how does this model the stupidly brave? Do they have good wisdom - or is being brave a failed save??

    Mental saves

I was thinking similarly too, but then how do we reconcile 'confidence'? The Bard has confidence for public performance and the Paladin has confidence to strike boldly into the enemy midst. It's that path that leads charisma to be being the stat to counter fear. (Perhaps 'Courage' is the...

    Mental saves

Ok I'm still a bit at a loss on what's going on with int/wis/cha saves. There seems to a be a bit of a mish/mash on what saves against what and that's coupled with wisdom seemingly the stat that really matters. I am aware of the pitfalls of enforced symmetry, but how about splitting the saves...

Two Weapon Fighting and Deadly Strike

I don't feel 2WF is such a bad deal. It's a means to closely distribute damage thereby eeking out more value as you can finish off weak or wounded without wasting damage on over-kill. You can always opt to focus attacks thereby inflicting normal damage. Come 3rd level you get a defensive...

    Randomized Hit Points

I'd like 2 parallel systems where players are free to opt (back and forth if they choose) for rolled or static hps every time they level up. The math for either should be equal so the choice comes down simply to player preference. Things I don't like about the con rules from the playtest is...

    Paladin/Ranger Belong

Wizards have flat out said they're going to be in 5E, there isn't really a debate in serious circles.
