Should Assassin be theme or class?

I think the assassin deserves a class. We've got classes built around weapons, prayers, spells, deception, charm, chivalry, animism, etc... Why not the quintessential class built around the art of assassination? It makes sense as this is a key part of stories involving political intrigue, and...

    The Dodge Action is Amazing

That's exactly what happened - Dwarf Cleric with AC22 defending MR 2d6+7 damage. The Orc Chieftain didn't hit either!

What does a paladin do (or should be doing)?

I see little in the Cleric or Fighter story that captures the essence of the Paladin. Fighters encompass a lot of archetypes but chivalric or divine story concepts don't get enough focus. Clerics too encompass broad archetypes that include divinity but there is far too heavy a spellcasting...

    6-5 Rule of Three

Having thought on it, I could be fine with humans getting +1 all & +1 to one, if the game world rationale goes something along the lines of "humans possess diverse strengths, and adventuring humans are a cut above the rest of humanity". I.e. all humans get a +1, adventuring humans get a blanket...

    6-5 Rule of Three

Am I the only one to sit up and notice what with humans getting a blanket +1 to all scores, and another +1 to one of choice, and then presumably another +1 from class!

The Ogre Killed the Dwarf in 3 Rounds

Not really, starting armour is just that. If you're going up against an Ogre you should look to get better armour as part of the strategy. Having a spare shield and using it on occasion is ok too. I don't think it is unreasonable to see your favourite gear as not optimal in every occasion...

Abilities Capped at 20 Won't Work

I like the 20 cap. This will mean that you don't have to keep on pouring everything into the prime stat and can distribute things to other scores too. Aesthetically I don't really like the 25 10 12 13 8 14 character. I'd rather the 20 10 13 14 9 16 character instead.

Useful aspects of Alignment in D&DN

Same alignments doesn't mean no conflict, but rather they're less likely to be at odds with diametrically opposed goals. These NG characters both have goals on a similar path, but here we're seeing the odd clash and a chance for a bit of quality roleplay. The NG would-be baby killer probably...

Useful aspects of Alignment in D&DN

It seems to me that the further down my list we go the less consensus we get, which makes me think Wizards core use for alignment will be very limited in scope. And I'm cool with that. I think jsaving's first sentence cuts to the chase. Alignment as a basic roleplay tool in the toolbox. For...

Useful aspects of Alignment in D&DN

I agree with all of these. It does seem quite odd that such low level magic was capable of revealing/hiding/misdirecting alignment. We are talking about a divination that can reveal the a belief structure of a being. I'd prefer it was raised significantly in level, made a conspicuous casting -...

Useful aspects of Alignment in D&DN

The problem with removing a signal of intent is that two players can accidentally make characters hell-bent on antagonizing each other. I've played with otherwise good friends who have gone hammer and tongs at each other. Sure they've got good roleplaying reasons but regardless it turned the...

Useful aspects of Alignment in D&DN

Yeah I agree that not all mechanics that included alignment had necessarily benefited from it. I can also think of: - Devil/Demon DR - a skirmish in the blood war would last forever when the fiendish footsoldiers can't hurt each other. - Dictum/Holy Word etc... where it made only sense to be...

Why I Think Rolling For Hit Points is a Bad Thing

So long as one player can choose to roll and another to take fixed, and on average they're about equal, I'm fine. It should be a flavourful choice not one determined by maths. I understand Con bonus is the minimum number so rolling 1's only matter if you're <14 Con.

Smite as the signature move of Paladins.

Never gonna happen - a vocal half of the paladin players don't want alignment.

Useful aspects of Alignment in D&DN

I'd like to explore the areas where alignment is most useful in a practical sense. Sure I've got my own ideas but, yeah, just want to know what other people think. Disclaimer - I'm taking it as a given that alignment is an option that can be removed by players that don't want to use it. The...

Smite as the signature move of Paladins.

I'd be ok with the loss of smite, it wasn't there until 3E+, and I'd rather the Paladin be moved back to being mainly martial with a bit of divine ability.

Paladin Design Goals ... WotC Blog

Thanks for the conversation - too often things get adversarial. I'm going to start another thread about alignment because while it can fray under heavy analysis, I get the feeling we're beating up on it for what it can't do rather than what it is there for. For the record I was never...

Paladin Design Goals ... WotC Blog

Ok let's say that egalitarianism is part of the definition of good, and thus the good folk are slowly working towards modern values. That's fair enough given the the proof of real human history (and we do broadly consider ourselves good people). I'm on-board so far. Before we go down the road...

Yeah, now that you quoted it, what is meant exactly by "animating value"?

Paladin Design Goals ... WotC Blog

The term chivalry has gone through a lot of change since it was first coined, so an historical analysis needs to settle on a definition at a given point in time and place. My definition rests in the current age and aspects that offend modern moral sensibilities are not considered chivalric -...
