    Where's the lance?

The problem there Estlor is that by default the spear does not compare to say the longsword. Why would a Knight use a spear? Feat support exits for the longsword just as much the spear, and the base weapon is simply better. Also I don't think you can really say that lance-use is as easy to...

    Where's the lance?

To be honest, I quickly gave up on the idea of developing a lance. I've too little time and I'd much rather leave it to the professionals, and it's another reason to get a subscription. I agree with you Aenghus about the reasons, but then again I've never been keen on the idea of a mounted...

    Where's the lance?

Yes, that is a good question. One we can all help answer if you like. Although we're talking historically about several lance types, I think the game would best be served with just the one. I just don’t think a large number of players would care for the nuances between jousting and main battle...

    Where's the lance?

Erm, going by that rationale we'd have a very short list of weapons, for example all swords can boil down into the one weapon? The bottom line is that currently there is no incentive to wield a lance (spear) over any other form of weapon when charging from horseback. I'm not interested in...

    Where's the lance?

Thanks guys. I don't think the spear really cuts it as an option. If we're thinking of say the lance used in Ivanhoe or A Knight's Tale, we're looking at a pretty specialized weapon. I may just have to build it from scratch in the houserules forum.

    Where's the lance?

I don't own so many supplementary books nor subscribe, so is it out there officially? Cheers :)

    Mearls: Abilities as the core?

I like the idea of ability scores being the core but... - All six stats should matter, noone should be able to dump without noticeable effect, but on the flip side, average stats shouldn't be punishing - that's the domain of low stats. - The point buy/default array/rolling method should...

    Shield spec. & imp defences

I agree that the AC bonuses should not stack. The ref bonus not stacking otoh strikes me something along the lines of too-small-benefit meets the too-hard basket. As an affected player however, this is something I want to and can fix. Done.

    Shield spec. & imp defences

Gutted, time for a houserule methinks.

    Shield spec. & imp defences

Quick question folks, Looking specifically at the ref bonus from shield spec, that hasn't been changed from a feat bonus has it? The books I've got show it doesn't stack with imp defences.

Design Space - What are the biggest gaps in 4th Edition?

Solo play. Provide a framework for this that covers more than just a random dungeon generator.

    D&D 4E Three Moves to Fix/Change 4E

Well here's the crux of one of my wishes. I would have fans of a class critically playtest what the game designers design. All people involved should be fully motivated and committed to producing a fun to play class. I'm happy for options to come out later but the original presented should be...

    D&D 4E Three Moves to Fix/Change 4E

Dude, you said you don't like or play paladins and that the original paladin is fine. However the original paladin that came out was definitely not fine. In my view that's not a position that can reasonably be defended. (I guess if you're talking about the paladin post Complete Divine then...

    D&D 4E Three Moves to Fix/Change 4E

Heh, this illustrates my point though. :) The original paladin suffered from: - excessive MAD (str, wis, cha + usual con & dex), which in turn led to - unusual specializations (str/cha, str/wis or cha/wis) each with a glaring hole in the build - the loss of iconic features such as the mount or...

    D&D 4E Three Moves to Fix/Change 4E

1 - Grab 3E and update it to 4E, being particularly careful in the slaying of any sacred cows. 2 - Get people who love a specific class to play-test it. For example the original 4E Paladin was not tested vigorously enough by people who love the class. 3 - Have fully self contained core rules...

Can someone explain to me what 'Christmas Tree effect' means?

In 3E you needed: enhancement to armour AC enhancement to shield AC (floating shields...) enhancement to hit/dmg enhancement to stats natural armour to AC deflection to AC enhancement to saves Moving beyond that you'd want: speed boosts elemental resistances DR (stoneskins) access to flight...

Defenses and To Hits for Your Party ~ Averages

As already touched on by several posters, having the average numbers for to-hit probability based on such a high score really accentuates things as levels accumulate and that prime stat get bumped each time. Already at 1st level, an 18 str/13 dex Cavalier gets a marked drop in skill when using...

Defenses and To Hits for Your Party ~ Averages

See right off the bat these average numbers are very close to the ceiling for many characters. Take a human paladin, +7 att at level 1 requires for example +4 stat, +2 prof & +1 feat. Assuming a generous DM handing out magic items early that happen to suit this character and this character...

    D&D 4E 4e D&D Plays Like a Video Game, and That's Awesome

Funnily enough, this 4E video-game edition doesn't actually have any video games out there. Earlier editions however have a ton, especially 1st & 2nd editions. I mean it's been over 2 years now, what's the wait for?
