Any crunchy RPG's out there anymore?

An interesting point. There don't seem to be a lot of really crunchy games these days. Hackmaster "5e" is pretty crunchy -- and I love it. They just released their 2nd monster book, mind you the PHB released in 2012 so it's not a "new" game, but ongoing support matters.

I have started recording some "unboxing" videos for some of the titles on the marketplace. Perhaps you'll find one to your liking.

How Do You Feel About NPC Party Members (A Poll)

This depends largely on your goals -- and how complex a system you are running to begin with. Yeah you don't need to know exactly how Kratos the indomitable got a +10 to attack, but if you say he is a level 5 fighter, you should have an idea of how he could get there. @Lanefan has made the...

How Do You Feel About NPC Party Members (A Poll)

Both are relevant. If action resolution is identical - more immersion/verisimilitude than if not. If build rules are also the same then even more verisimilitude/immersion. It is also a question of what your rules are meant to represent. The base assumption in the discussion thus far is...

How Do You Feel About NPC Party Members (A Poll)

This is critical I think. For new players, exposing them to NPCs that have a clear personality that makes their advice suspect is important. Such as: blood-thirsty/reckless, cowardly/cautious, glory-hound, obsequious/servile or indifferent. Once they sort out that NPCs give bad advice...

    Support Your FLGS

As mentioned, right now even our PDF sales have 20% go to support a FLGS (we are limiting it to Canadian local game stores, because that is the area we focus on for retailers.) In another thread you and I were discussing some of XPRs Advanced Adventures line, if you do pick one or two up, I...

That is unfortunate @TheAlkaizer. There are good local stores out there (and sometimes you just hit staff at the wrong moment.)

We just added PDFs of Free Spacer! A sandbox science fiction roleplaying game about a crew of a commissioned starship performing contracts for a Patron faction in a quadrant wide cold war. Mechanically you roll your positive salvo dice, and the GMs negative threat dice and cancel our successes...

Release The Halls of Arden Vul (Immense Megadungeon)

I just bought the PDF from the CDG Marketplace (which I run, but there was no way I wasn't going to pay for this glorious megadungeon). Joseph has kindly set the price to $109 CAD (~$85 USD if you flip that toggle at the top atm), passing on savings from the lower cut we take to anyone picking...

    Good Fantasy campaigns, system immaterial

The connection is very light to Pod-caverns. You can easily use the two Shadowvein modules without it. I have access to XRPs whole Advanced Adventures catalog so if you are curious about a specific title, I'd be happy to take a look and answer it.

    Good Fantasy campaigns, system immaterial

Maybe check out XRPs Down the Shadowvein and The Mouth of the Shadowvein It's hexcrawl-ish, that follows and underground river to various locations of interest. Like most Advanced Adventures stuff they are absolutely packed with content. Technically this follows The Pod-Caverns of the...

You are most welcome. Thank you for providing physical space for people to enjoy RPGs. I figured I'd provide a brief mention of some of the titles we have. I have a least one from each publisher, but there are many more titles: Like 5e D&D but looking for rules for a modern setting? Check...

They moved to Yonge Street, just north of Dundas about . . . 7 years ago? Black Canary cafe is part of it. There's a nice place to sit drink tea, look over the street below and read your recent purchases. I had my Toronto launch party for Simple Superheroes in that location in 2016 :) That...

I have always loved Friendly Local Game Stores. I suspect I never would have run my own game sessions without having stumbled into a FLGS a year or so after my initial exposure to D&D. For my Master’s thesis I visited just over 50 game and comic stores in the Greater Toronto Area. With many...

    On playing new game systems

I love trying out new systems. It is one of my chief reasons to go to conventions (that and running my own game.) They are the best way to capture that amazing feeling you first got when you played your very first game - - you see a horizon of new possibilities opening up before you.

    Variant combat mechanics

Just to elaborate on the Hackmaster recomendation: Hackmaster doesn't use "turns" or rounds, it uses seconds, meaning that no one is "just standing around" you can always choose to move, change what you are doing etc. Different weapons and spells have different seconds counts between uses/when...

    New DM, Brand New Players

They'll be growing pains for the first little while. A lot of this is about everyone communicating expectations, as well as what can be done. Some debriefing post and pre game can help. Let there be in game consequences - but let the players know why those consequences happen. This is the big...

    Happy birthday Dave Arneson!

Havard, somehow I missed it this year. So no special get-together. However, now that I have had this reminder: The Compose Dream Games Marketplace is happy to offer a 20% discount today and tomorrow for Dave Arneson game day. Just use the coupon code "Arneson" Thanks Dave, for being the...

Ideal group size, is two PCs enough?

I have often found that for Superhero gaming, 2 players works great. You can spend more time exploring the people they know (the supporting cast of characters). The intrigue and nuance of having friends or family who turn out to be villains, and in general exploring what makes your heroes tick...

    [Q&A] Fraser Ronald (Sword's Edge) 04/13/2017 8:30 p.m. CDT!

Gave it a read. Thanks for sharing Dan. In some ways seems fairly similar to his Centurion game (in terms of how characters get defined), though that uses pretty different die mechanics, and has some stuff about duty, valour and honour.
