"i will command the defense of the city myself!"

Maybe the incompetant is just more subtle or devious than everyone expects ala 'Tactics of Mistakes' (Dorsai series).

Need help designing a Bronze Age City?

If you have access to a copy, read The Assyrian by Nicholas Guild. This will give many ideas regarding Bronze age cities and cultures.

    Mass Arrow Fire?

How about: - determine a 'basic' unit size, for the attackers - each attack by a 'unit' automatically hits the ground area targeted (optionally roll to hit area) - this triggers a REF save of DC10 (or whatever number you feel appropriate) - each multiple of the 'unit' firing into the same area...

(2nd Edition) Seriously, why it was wise to go around naked, in 2nd Edition D&D

Just recently I threw an sorceror and assassin cohorts against my players. The sorceror had improved invisibility and a necklace of fireballs. One of the players had the ability to cast fireball. After a few rounds of the assassins beating on the party, the party finally managed to locate on of...

[nostalgia] Looking back at the stupid crap we used to do

Not exactly a stupid thing but... A friend of mine had a wizard character (2nd edition AD&D) who was 85 years old (human). He was only 1st level. The catch was he was in reality a 20th level wizard that had suffered a magical accident, and his memory never recovered. In all regards he was only...

[nostalgia] Looking back at the stupid crap we used to do

I used to fill multiple pages of graph paper with my dungeon levels. Virtually the entire sheet of paper was filled. Each square represented 10 square feet. Each square was actually 1 square millimeter on the page. My players thought I was nuts.

Questions about very "low" level adventures.

with newbie characters/players you might want to tone down the brutality/emotion a bit initially, at least until they get the hang of things. Make your journey to market etc... fairly lengthy, then have an event that cuts off their easy return to their homes (invasion, natural disaster etc...)...

Questions about very "low" level adventures.

How about a cattle drive? The characters can be part of a group of villagers taking the cattle to the regional market 'x' days/weeks away. Along the way they encounter many things such as; - mundane accidents, illnesses - strange new geography - natural/unnatural predators - small towns with...

    Wall of Force Questions 2

It is not the edges that would cut you. It is your momentum forcing parts of your body unimpeded by the imovable object (Wall of force) to continue on, while those parts that are opposed by the wall of force would stop. With enought momentum, the two parts would separate. The theory of very...

Can I make a really 'frilly' Wall of Force?

Or multiple permanent monofilament lines criss-crossing the opening of a tunnel, pit, doorway, etc... Me thinks as a DM I will institute some Minimum values on wall of force.

Can I make a really 'frilly' Wall of Force?

What about a wall of force that is let say 1 millimeter tall by however wide is necessary to use up the available area. Then picture that wall of force at neck level. Then picture a rapidly approaching horse and rider.

New Magic item (My players stay out)

We don't normally use psionics in my campaign, as I have historically had great aversion to psionics. Maybe it is time for me to 'expand my horizons' ;)

New Magic item (My players stay out)

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to re-evaluate exactly what I want to do. I think that I really want just a major inconvenience, not a potential instant death scenario. One of the objects is expected to fall into the hands of the party so it should be useful, but I don't want it to destroy my...

New Magic item (My players stay out)

Hmmmm.................. I guess I will have to think of something else, or create something from scratch. I want something similar to Maze, yet without the interplanar stuff, and that can be embeded in objects. Maybe with a very limited distance or something. If there is anything in the rules...

New Magic item (My players stay out)

Greetings, Is it possible to create an arrow that when it strikes a target it teleports the subject as per the spell (in a random direction and distance). How would I calc the cost, with a saving throw, without a saving throw? Thanks,

    Climbing Stairs

What I am planning to do is have the stairway spiral and pyramid in shape. If they fall, the will fall a set distance (need to calc it yet) take damage, and then recieve a chance to check their fall, otherwise they drop to the next level. That way there will be potential for alot of damage, but...

    Climbing Stairs

Well the stair in question is spiral without a rail, so I doubt they would be falling down the stair for very far  I guess I could treat it as rough terrain for anything other than normal paced movement.
