DM question: how much do you incorporate PC backgrounds into the campaign?

Yeah, I'm not likely to ignore or turn away a large backstory. If you made the effort I'm going to at least give it a look, but my preference for shorter more usable backstories still stands. That also tends to agree with what you say about first level. Not much adventuring you can do before 1st...

DM question: how much do you incorporate PC backgrounds into the campaign?

I like to incorporate them, but only slightly. This is also because I like a short background. My goal is not to make the character's personal history the source of the adventure, but to make those character feel like a part of the world and not someone removed. Featuring NPCs, Factions or...

D&D 5E (2014) Which Is Better: Regular or Alternate Cover Art For Theros?

As for which book I would rather own, I think I prefer the original cover. The Alternate Artwork looks very cool, but I don't like the way the title and text on it looks (on WotC site.) It would make an awesome poster though.

OSR What's your brand of Basic?

I adore Old School Essentials (which is essentially the B/X rules) but I wouldn't use B/X because OSE is just so much more cleaned up. However while I haven't played it I'm also interested in BECMI since it is largely compatible with B/X but has the Companion, Master and Iimmortals sets as well...

WotC World Reveal of Baldur's Gate 3

Am I the only one who prefers turn-based combat? I love Pathfinder Kingmaker (haven't played Pillars yet, but I own it and its on my list) but man the combat irritates me sometimes. I loved Divinity Original Sin 1 & 2. If this was just those games with a D&D paint-job I would be happy. But its...

Check Out Jared Blando's 'Age of Sigmar' Map For Cubicle 7

I love Jared Blando's style so all of his maps are an isntant win for me!

D&D 5E (2014) Best on screen depiction of the sorcerer class

I really like the "Dark Magic" users from The Dragon Prince. They suck the life out of magical living things (plants and animals, typically small ones, but you could suck it out of large creatures and humanoids too) in order to cast their spells. You could argue it as wizardry too, since its...

Twelve trees and green suns; refrences to a real world mythology?

The green sun thing might just be a play on that green being somewhat of an unhealthy color when used in fiction. While not exactly a sun, I can think of Warpstone and all its related Chaos magic/fire in Warhammer has a green color. (Plus the Chaos Moon Morrslieb is also green, maybe made of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is 5e the Least-Challenging Edition of D&D?

I don't really think lethality = challenge. And I don't really approve of making it more likely to die to make the game "harder." (Personal preference really.) I like to think of the tactical combat of D&D like a game of XCOM or Fire Emblem or Divinity Original Sin. (Any turn based game...

D&D 5E (2014) Why does a long rest only restore half the hit dice?

You've got a point. The number is pretty arbitrary really. Maybe it was a decision they made during playtest or simply thought it felt right?

D&D 5E (2014) Why does a long rest only restore half the hit dice?

I think the decision was made to sometimes require more than a single day of rest. For example, in a dungeon scenario it may force you to go back to town at some point since you've run out of hit dice.

I'm going to check this one out now! Thanks.

D&D General DMs Guild Roundup: January/February

I absolutely love that fans and Adepts are expanding the Campaign Setting options for FR. Most of this information is either a reprint or summary of existing articles, many of which are very obscure, but at that point its like FR Historiography and I appreciate all the hard work. For example...

Unearthed Arcana WotC Removes Latest Unearthed Arcana

I would say that's probably exactly what happened. The designers had good intentions but when the possibly problematic nature of it was highlighted the pulled it back. They might re-release it with tweaks, but I don't know. What else can a "Love Domain" do but use charm effects? Especially...

    D&D 5E (2014) Recommendations for a 5e 3rd party adventure path?

If you like The Tome of Beasts, which is made by Kobold Press, you should check out the adventures they have in their Midgard setting. As someone mentioned, the Courts of the Shadow Fey is a proper full length adventure path. There is also Tales from the Old Margreve which has 12 Adventures...

D&D 5E (2014) Greyhawk, and race options for Oerth PCs

Yes, but now you're taking my quote waaaay out of context with crazy exaggerations. I mean within the bounds of D&D. I really like Tabaxi. So naturally I was quite bummed when my friend said there were no Tabaxi in his homebrew world. However, he still has drow and tieflings and dragonborn et al...

D&D 5E (2014) Greyhawk, and race options for Oerth PCs

Well I wouldn't place any hard and fast restrictions, but being a new generation of D&D Player I also don't have any ties to the simpler older version of Greyhawk. Here's how I would handle it. Fantasy Standards (Elves,Dwarves, Humans, etc.) are fine, no need to change anything here...

Critical Role Wildemount: Most Pre-orders Since D&D Core Rulebooks

I'm quite excited for this setting. I am a fan of Critical Role certainly, but having followed the show Matt's world of Exandria fills most of the standard D&D tropes. He has his own flair of course, but it could be a great alternative to Forgotten Realms or Greyhawk, delivering the 'classic'...

D&D 5E (2014) If Psion is fixed and official does it belong into FR as basic and RAW?

I see no issue with them being a standard option for FR but labelled with that "uncommon" brush that Dragonborn and Tieflings get in the PHB. Most people just ignore that anyway so its really just there for DMs who want more nuance.

Critical Role Matt Mercer Speaks About The Wildemount Book

Matt being such a humble and heartwarming individual again. I am likely to pick this book up. I'm not in a position to run a game in it any time soon (Currently in Midgard, with Eberron watching from my shelf) but I am a fan and do enjoy Matt's world-building.
