ToV [Kobold Press] New Project Black Flag Web Page

Hi I have a question: Will PBF eventually be released under a creative commons license? I ask because the recent OGL debacle has forced many publishers to move away from licenses similar to the OGL for fear of this happening again sometime down the road. For example: 1. Creative Commons...

Indie Publishers, what are you working on for 2023?

I am currently in the trenches writing my first major ttrpg, and I am hoping to publish by the end of the year. However, the OGL debacle has set me back in costs and time invested on creating a 5e project that is now being migrated over to our own in house system. Our game features a heavily...

D&D General How To Use Creative Commons

Thank you for this informative article. I am a little confused about noting any modifications (quoted below). Would it be sufficient to say "this work is an excerpt of the original 5.1 SRD" when modifying SRD content for your game using the CC license? I am simply trying to understand just how...

@Ondath I heard the news, it is truly, truly tragic, but I am glad to hear that you are ok. Keep your head up my friend and stay safe.

    Crow Eating thread

I didn't believe the first youtuber who revealed the leak, because at that time I trusted the 1.0a OGL to be ironclad (going on 20 years of past history), boy was I wrong. Even after seeing the m30 disaster with mtg (and the reversal on the reserved list), I never thought they would try it with...

Official News EN Publishing Launches Advanced 5E SRD

Use of the CC-BY 4.0 would potentially require publishers to make a separate CC-only SRD for anything they would want to release as creative commons content. It's an extra step anyway, which means some content potentially wont be added back into the pool of CC materials. (But, SRD's are an...

WotC Backs Down: Original OGL To Be Left Untouched; Whole 5E Rules Released as Creative Commons

Phew. Getting to the end of the thread (page 33?) took a while. I just want to thank everyone for helping in any way that you did. Thank you for signing any of the various petitions & the #opendnd letter. Some folks here said that petitions don't change anything, but together we generated over...

    Matt Colville weighs in.

Mkay gotcha, All I have is the Underground core rulebook (softcover), and the supplement "Fully Strapped Always Packed," but I did see someone with the notebook put in a binder at a game store when the game was still being played. Its been a while since then.

Haha, I think it was Underground RPG, the supplements were softcover and were perforated as tear out sheets to be included in a big 3-ring binder containing everything.

OGL v1.2 Survey Feedback: 'Hasn't Hit The Mark'

That's exactly what the 90's was like in my personal experience. D&D was for hardcore players and they were generally a closed style group (they didn't typically welcome new players in my area, you had to already know the vast amount of 2e rules and their preferred playstyle to become a regular...

OGL v1.2 Survey Feedback: 'Hasn't Hit The Mark'

It is truly unfortunate that they have chosen this path, because up to now, regardless of anything else they may have done, their continuing use of the OGL was helping to maintain their positive reputation. So much to the point of becoming monolithic within the industry (both in size and reach).

OGL v1.2 Survey Feedback: 'Hasn't Hit The Mark'

Absolutely agree. That's why the ORC is looking to be the most promising so far, because it will not be controlled by any ttrpg companies. A neutral third party is indeed important to keeping the open gaming community healthy and free from outside interference.

OGL v1.2 Survey Feedback: 'Hasn't Hit The Mark'

The 1.0a was drafted based on open software licenses available at the time, after which many of those licenses were revised to include "irrevocable" terms. The 1.0a was unfortunately not revised this way. Despite this fact, open software licenses without the word irrevocable have been found to...

OGL v1.2 Survey Feedback: 'Hasn't Hit The Mark'

Yeah it was a half-rhetorical comment I guess, from my perspective they probably don't expect anyone to go along with it, they just want to push everyone out of their walled garden before the lights go on.

OGL v1.2 Survey Feedback: 'Hasn't Hit The Mark'

If they are still intent deauthorizing the 1.0a, then I am not going to continue to engage with them. That goodwill is long gone, all it took was a few weeks to end 20 years of good faith and safe harbor. All the rest is secondary. Any terms they offer are useless to a 3pp if they can still...
