    Arcanist playtest

NO. Damage at EOT means the -monster- gets control. Your control is greater with BOT damage. BOT damage is greater control than EOT damage -- because BOT damage first hits the monster (making the next turn's BOT damage matter -more-) then presents the monster with the threat of even more...

    Arcanist playtest

It didn't really matter; you could totally near-solo an encounter with Flaming Sphere alone (certainly, a Genasi Blaster could; hell, at 5th level I was using a fire tome to be able to cast Flaming Sphere twice per day). This is a big hit to the blaster build, but IMO it's warranted.

6th Edition: What will it hold?

I'm so looking forward to 6th edition. 5th edition was interesting (and who would know that it would be preleased at Origins, only to a select few, only to be replaced with a new edition in just a few months; they must have been working on both editions simultaneously, realizing the reactiong...

    Epic Destiny: Exalted Angel

I'll note, btw, that there already -are- two "Immortal" races. The Shardminds (who are just weird), and the Deva (who are former angels). The Deva are particularly relevant here, as they have an angelic nature. Deva do need to sleep (apparently -- although their style lends more to trance...

    Tips for Spicing Up Combat

(edit: Enworld, I love you so much. Particularly the way things unpredicably do the "you're editing in full html and I'll kill all whitespace" thing; that one's awesome) The consumable item abuse is consumable item abuse. Enforce the rarity rules, or stop the player form spending gold he/she...

Would removing Superior Weapons open the game up more?

@Nyronus At Epic, sure. Except that you only need to be doing 3W to beat Focus at epic -- equalling focus means you beat it with your spike damage. And actually, chargers can trivially hit 3W at will via Surprising Charge. But really, your model is flawed. Most Paragon and Epic power-using...

Would removing Superior Weapons open the game up more?

@keterys -- Sure. But house rules like this aren't relevant in LFR anyway. @Nyronus: Superior Weapon prof varies a lot in facility -- which I think is most of the beef the OP has with it, really, rather than the feat tax issues. Two handed weapons usually have good or great SWP options; so do...

    Masks of Living Flesh

Interesting. This was fun and evocative, but I confess having -some- crunch might have been nice. In this case, since it's something of a legend, I could see presenting the Masks mechanically in three different ways -- as a monster (an NPC controlled by "his" mask), as a minor artifact, and as...

    June Errata

Actually, I could see using a threshold as a mechanism of replacing the "missed attacks never damage a minion" hack. Using reasonable thresholds would still let lucky missed attacks take out or bloody minions just like they can take out non-minion monsters - but minions would still have...

    Whoa there, Sparky!

Actually, one can make the breath weapon trick scale pretty well. Stuff like Dragonbreath Warrior (+1W on next melee attack when you use your breath weapon), Draconic Spellcaster to improve the hit/damage of both your spells and your breath weapon, and feats/features that make your breath...

Is Power Strike a Weapon Attack?

FireLance: Nope! Because the power doesn't -do- any damage. It does "extra" damage, adding to the damage of another attack. Extra damage isn't a damage roll, and doesn't benefit from bonuses to damage rolls.

    Whoa there, Sparky!

DL: Huh? Of course it does. The fire keyword thing is just a mod of Fire weapons to not do anything at all except to untyped damage; if it works at all it certainly does add the keyword. Damage keywords follow the damage. It's not at all clear whether Wizards will apply that "fix" to the...

    Whoa there, Sparky!

Hell, the hurl breath trick is even more BoR (and, you know, actually effective) than the silly Lightning Dagger one. That said, you've basically got a feature that is either so corner-case that it can't be factored into your plans at all (although it does come with a damage bonus on your...

    Whoa there, Sparky!

To breathe every round: take hurl breath. Then whatever you need to boost your breath weapon, and include yourself in the area of your breath weapon (it's an area burst 2; you can do that and still hit something 4 spaces away). In epic, with admixture, adaptable breath, Frost Breath...

Masterwork armor in OCB's new inventory

Indeed. I really like the idea here of even making the "basic" armors of each type effectively masterwork with sufficient enhancement bonus. It was always intended that all armor with a sufficient bonus would be masterwork (even were it magically enhanced by the players); that was built into...

    Questions about Shapechangers

Looking through compendium -- not much! Moonclaw weapons (Dungeon 185) do grant +1 to defenses against shapechangers and have d12 crit damage against them. And Lunia 's Bracelet will force you to resume your true form. Also, the Invoker power Howl at the Moon (Dr 386) has extra effects...

Home Game Culture Shock: LFR players vs the 15min workday

Back to back rests are sometimes a problem, sometimes not. And then, sometimes you've got a bard and it ceases being an issue. But there are plenty of LFR games where you get punished for taking multiple rests in a row and home sessions where you don't. Good LFR players in organized groups...

    Just how compatible is Essentials?

I don't know; he's wrong, but he's also right. The fact is, if you play with full eratta (and you should; it's a better game--though note that they're redoing the cleric eratta this month), there's nothing preventing you from using PH1 classes in a modern, post-essentials game, nor allowing...

Do you want variety or bonuses in your feats?

Ok, here's the thing. I'm totally OK with having a space between Johnny and Spike -- with Spike takiing every single feat that maxes out his combat effectiveness, and Johnny mostly picking feats he finds fun and only taking math feats when he finds he's not having fun because he's always...

    Just how compatible is Essentials?

A quick google lookup produces this definition, which fits what I'm using very well: Adjective: No longer produced or used; out of date. That describes much of PH1 (and MM1, and much of DMG) to a T. They aren't produced, and they are out of date (and have been or are intended to be replaced...
