Mearls says adventures are hard to sell [merged]

Well, I haven't been privy to that information. I'm just going by the product description which states "this book contains detailed source material on the land of..." Heck, that must be a pretty good marketing ploy, because I fell for it :) The last FR adventure they put out was Twilight...

Mearls says adventures are hard to sell [merged]

As a big FR fan, I'll only address the last question. It's my belief that, as Henry stated, no one third-party was making adventures any more. And since there was an abundant amount of regional books for FR [both 2ed and 3ed], I believe WotC decided to combine the two types of books -...

    Audio aids?

Yes, I sometimes use sounds. I've found about 80 different short wave sounds and mp3 audio files from various places on the net. They range from creaking doors, restaurant (tavern), growling, coins clinking, swords clanging, footsteps, water dripping, thunder, and an arrow hitting something...

    Origin of Halflings

From dictionary.com: "Originally, 'Halflin' was the Scots word hauflin, pre-dating The Hobbit and Dungeons & Dragons. It meant an awkward rustic teenager, who is neither man nor boy, and so half of both. Another word for halflin is hobbledehoy."

You Don't Talk Shop at the Dinner Table

Yeah, we have a house rule about this: Code of Conduct 1. Out-of-Character - Here are the guidelines for Out-of-Character performances: a. Real World Stuff - Please do not talk about current real world political and/or religious situations at the gaming table. However, people can talk about...

What were medieval times journalist-types called?

Also might want to check out the "Broadcryers of Waterdeep" articles [scroll down] in the Realmslore Archives. Some useful information on the tabloids of the city.

    OotS 406

Wow, that was probably one of the most intense OotS strips yet... Roy's drawing his sword in the second to last panel. Maybe we'll see another fight. For once, I can't wait until Monday.

Dresden Files, who would you cast?

Actually, my reference about Bob had more to do with his personality. I'm okay with them giving him a ghostly image rather than the dust-mote Bob as depicted in the books. However, one of the reasons I like the books so much is because Bob is pretty sarcastic and funny. To me, the tv Bob came...

Dresden Files, who would you cast?

Yeah, I just watched it too. They changed some things from the books. And what happened to Bob?

Question for the grognards: Why does D&D have dwarves/elves/hobbits etc.?

Not to derail [too much], but this brings up an interesting notion about my response above. Gnomes were probably introduced as an option for playing a magic-using small person [as an illusionist].

Question for the grognards: Why does D&D have dwarves/elves/hobbits etc.?

I believe gnomes came from Paracelsus [16th century alchemist, physician, and astrologer] who used the word in a treatise [as gnomi] to refer to elemental earth beings. It is possible he got the word from earlier folklore -- possibly from the greek "genomos" or "earth-dweller." Why they were...

    Does your group DM?

Most of my players are willing to DM. I DM most of the time and sometimes a few of my players DM. Nobody has been banned from DMing. No. No-Not reallly. Again, not really - although it may make players read more of the rules. I'll echo previous posters and say that while it may not make...

So how do you play cohorts, familiars and animal companions?

In the game I DM, familiars and animal companions are controlled by the players. Cohorts are "mostly" controlled by the player -- I'd say 95% player and 5% DM. If I notice the player doing something concerning with the cohort, I might intervene by giving "alternative suggestions."

    Toys for use as minis

I found a number of animals [horses, donkeys, tigers, bears, wolves & eagles] that are "miniature size" at novelty toy stores such as Finnegan's in Portland, OR and Top Ten Toys in Seattle. They usually sell them in clear plastic containers near the cash registers. I have also been able to...

    Tracking Group Resources

I whipped up a group treasure sheet for my players to use. When they have some down time, they usually divy it up. As a GM, I also write down items on my own treasure sheet. This helps me cross reference and keep track of items - especially those that haven't been magically identified yet.

    Poll: DM, GM, or Other?

I prefer "GM" to "DM." When writing things out, I use "GM." During our games I typically use "DM" [old habit I guess]. However, I loathe the term "Dungeon Master" -- it always makes me think of the D&D cartoon and this guy:

    Oots 397

I honestly think I need to do this. Since I have been reading OotS [almost] since it's debut, I have forgotten much of the past stories. Time to go back and read them again ;)
