This is what I do. I downloaded a fairly cheap mp3 recorder off the internet (I think its called a "StepVoice Recorder") and picked up a microphone (Sony puts out a good omni-directional microphone). Works like a charm with my laptop.

Yeah, as the DM I spend way more than most of my players. The majority of my players are college students, so they have other priorities right now. However, I have one player (who's not in college) who probably has spent just as much (if not more) than I have :eek:

I record all our game sessions with a recorder program on my laptop. Later, I will go back through each session and summarize them. If there was something particularly interesting during combat, I might detail it in the summary.
