1) TIE fighters -- the part that Cassian is assembling looks like it could be part of the outer wing structure, or part of the command pod.
2) Nothing. It's all busy work that accomplishes nothing. "The objective of X is X."
I suspect that this episode will be the last of that for a while. The hating her husband part will probably continue, if, as seems likely, he just escalated the breakdown of their marriage by getting/having Tay killed.

I think it is about twenty to thirty years too early to be making such evaluations. That notwithstanding, I would recommend the works of Nora K. Jemisin, particularly The Inheritance Trilogy.
