You were reading a lot of Saberhagen when Valdek found that sword, weren't you? ;)

[D&D Design Discussion] Preserving the "Sweet Spot"

Fair enough - I know I didn't really have a style that "gelled" until well into the 2e days. So, let's skip forward to there: how did you measure a successful campaign in 2e? Was it the same as today? Different? How?

[D&D Design Discussion] Preserving the "Sweet Spot"

Let's approach this from a different tack. This is one of those "all about Wulf" threads (though your sentiments and mine are very, very similar), so I want to get some info before tackling things more head on. Think back to 1e for me - where exactly did the level cookies get small enough for...

How do we prepare to fight a dragon about which we know nothing?

To begin with, your wizard should be cranking out as many Stoneskin spells as possible until judgement day the day you decide to tackle the dragon. This, along with the right selection of resist energy spells will soak up a bunch (and I do mean a bunch) of the damage a dragon can dish out. In...

Dominate Versus Magic Circle Against Evil

In this situation, I'd have been tempted to make an adhoc table ruling that the dominating cleric would be the one to have to make the save. It might fly in the face of RAW, but it just feels like a better fit.

    Eric Noah's Info

It occurs to me that if something like that were to take off, it would only be a matter of time before they came out with $250 super sets as adventures, or even TOEE size products (split up in 4 or 5 packs, of course).

    Eric Noah's Info

/me wonders if 4e will simply do away with the Monster Manual completely, relying on the minis (and the cards that come with them) to serve that purpose.

[D&D Design Discussion] Preserving the "Sweet Spot"

Looking at this from a strictly mechanical POV, this is where things gets sticky. Earlier editions of D&D created this elongated sweet spot through the use of diminishing returns (increasing amounts of experience for the next level), but the desire to keep a sense of quick advancement rules...

What is the “home base” for your party?

All these homebases are for the same 16th/17th level party. Like fusangite, we found that introducing such things during play can be time consuming in the extreme. As a result, we use Leadership to model well run properties (making the cohort stationary and key in either the base's defense or...

Marshal: Who likes this class, and why?

This misses the point of the Marshal. Let's take a look at what that +16 to initiative actually gives the group as a whole - it means that the chance for everyone on the party to go first is dramatically increased. Now let's take a look at the fallout from this in a well oiled party - for the...

What Classes or Prestige Classes give Flurry of Blows?

IIRC, one of the alt-barbarian abilities (from UA? - I can;t remember) replaced the normal rage with a whirling rage which basically removed the +4 Con and replaced it with flurry of blows.

Marshal: Who likes this class, and why?

As is, he's a great 5th man for the party. With full BAB he might take the "tank" position by himself.

Marshal: Who likes this class, and why?

Before the Marshal came out, we put together a 4 skill point, full BAB, 10 HD PrC with a similar set of abilities (though in this case, the abilities were more less powerful but more flexible than the Marshal's).

What's best to multiclass with a Knight or Beguiler?

    Knight + Marshall - a "lynchpin" PC.

Mearls idea on modifiers in D&D

I do this all the time - started doing it right around level 10 or so as a player. When I DM my notes tend to be scribbled affairs anyway, so its relatively easy to change things on the fly there as well. Something that's helped us is to say "you are responsible for your own modifiers, but if...

    clerics

Not really. The topic has been bandied about since the 3.0 players first came out.

    clerics

Here's the real question - how many of your spells go toward healing? Many times the 3rd Ed design team has said that they built the cleric to be the most powerful class simply because people seemed to have an aversion to playing the walking medical kit. But what I really think they mean is...

My wizard and his flaming Pick

Well now we know who uses the D&D minis for their RPG game, don't we? (Hey - that's a heck of a good fig!) :)

The Heroes of Icemist (SmallBeginnings 2)- Interlude update 2/21/2008!

You should already know by know that Fett will be there most of the Con - I think he signed up for one of your games. I'll be out with Mrs. Enk for a day trip on Saturday (and be staying overnight til Sunday morning) - aside from a dinner we're hitting that evening, I've got absolutely no...
