D&D General Best "out of the box" ready to run adventures/modules?

I wouldn't recommend Dragon Heist either. It's high on the prep scale. It has some significant holes and DM has to make some big choices up front.

D&D General Best "out of the box" ready to run adventures/modules?

But after that your workload increases significantly. The lizardman-sahuagin conflict can work but U2 and U3 are really clunky as written. You will need to read through them and make some clear decisions on what options you want to give the party. Saltmarsh is an awesome as a home base but...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D 5e Adventure Reviews

This is pretty much my ranking as well. Tiered list is more "accurate"; it's tough to straight rank them in numeric order. Too many variables. I might drop Saltmarsh Yawning down a bit...or at least break the list into 4 tiers instead of 3. GoS and TFtYP are both great but highly inconsistent...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D 5e Adventure Reviews

Forge of Fury is a great dungeon set piece, but I agree it need better context for why the players are there. Some of the rooms could use a little more fleshing out, or at least some more dynamic encounters to bring it to life rather than just room-to-room exploring. It has a lot of potential...

    D&D 5E (2024) Class features with drawbacks

Short answer: no. Slightly longer answer: maybe Trust me, I am all for consequence of choice and meaningful decisions in design. However, imposing exhaustion is a bridge too far for me. It's a misstep by the design team. If you want to keep a drawback for frenzy, there are a few ways to go...

    D&D 5E (2024) Class features with drawbacks

Yup, or at least not exhaustion as a drawback. So now the price the Berserker has to pay is to not use their signature ability. Again, no other class has to make that kind of choice.

    D&D 5E (2014) Sell this 3.5 grognard on 5e

I've played all the editions since the Red Box with most of the my playtime with 3ed. 5E is my favorite edition by far. It's SO much easier to run as a DM and it's not even close. I couldn't even with 3ed monster stat blocks anymore. Aside from bounded accuracy, the best thing 5E has done is...

    D&D 5E (2024) Class features with drawbacks

No it's not. Just get rid of it. Done. Congrats you just fixed the Berserker! You hit the nail on the head with cost benefit. Everything we do in life - never mind gaming - is cost-benefit analysis. The problem with the berserker is that incurring exhaustion is an extremely steep price to pay...

    D&D 5E (2014) August 2012 playtest revisted thoughts

The Next sorcerer is amazing: uses willpower (spell points) to cast spells and then their origin grants new abilities as they spend willpower. Unique mechanic with a ton of design space and lots of flavor.

D&D 5E (2014) It is OK for a class to be the worst

I know the rules. I absolutely don't consider requiring a long rest "rapidity of recovery." Quite the opposite. You shoot your shot and then become a liability for your party until you can get another long rest. It's a terrible mechanic, and there are absolutely better ways to design a...

D&D 5E (2014) It is OK for a class to be the worst

"Perform differently" is significantly different than "isn't very fun", "lacks clear design direction", or "under performs". I'm all for fixing the latter three.

    D&D 5E (2014) Sorcerer Changes

Agreed. While I do think the sorcerer needs a bit of a power boost, that's certainly not the biggest problem with the class. The biggest problem is that the sorcerer is generic and bland. The mechanics don't fit the fluff at all. The sorcerer needs an overhaul. It needs mechanics that evoke...

    D&D 5E (2014) [Let's Read] Five Torches Deep

I was excited to check out 5TD because it's an OSR that uses 5E as its core. I'm generally not a fan of OSR clones because they are usually billed as old-school and streamlined but still use archaic and necessarily complex systems because they are nostalgic sacred cows. But I digress... But as...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sorcerer Changes

I'm not saying the sorcerer needs spell points... ...but it needs spell points. The sorcerer suffers from being both uninteresting compared to the warlock/wizard/bard and one of the weaker classes overall. Not a good combination. Spell points takes care of the first in spades.

D&D 5E (2014) Would you let your player choose their magic items they get?

Short answer, no. Part of the fun for me as DM is giving players items they don't expect and seeing what they do with them. It also gives the players opportunities to try something new for their character. Having to make choices is fun. That said, I do tailor items for players occasionally...

D&D 5E (2014) Reduced standard array in exchange for a bonus feat at 1st.

Probably a good topic for another thread but I agree. The game is supposed to be fun. People are busy, have lives, kids, work, etc to keep track of. Like you said, if something happened in-game that the characters clearly would remember or know, I'm fine with dropping hints or telling the...

D&D 5E (2014) Reduced standard array in exchange for a bonus feat at 1st.

HAHA! So true. But I do that for my players already. I'm a pushover DM (except when I'm not).

D&D 5E (2014) Reduced standard array in exchange for a bonus feat at 1st.

Agree 100%. The vast majority of feats are highly overrated. But the ones that aren't are really good to borderline game-breaking. It's one of the main reasons the feat system in 5E is pretty awful. This I disagree with. 5E needs more choices. The 5E feat system has three major problems...

    D&D 5E (2014) [Let's Read] 5e: HARDCORE MODE

Yeah not a fan. For "hardcore" mode, you'll get a LOT more use out of Giffyglyph's stuff. His stuff is definitely mechanics-heavy but his design is top notch. If you are tired of solo monsters getting stomped in 5E, definitely take a look at Monster Maker!
