Paranoia virgins, looking for some advice how to run a game...

Having just picked it up at GenCon, I'd recommend using Mongoose's Paranoia card game as an intro to the RPG -- it's got all of the key elements, and it's cleverly constructed to make infighting, backstabbing and other Paranoia staples mandatory. Plus, it covers the color spectrum and typical...

Which do you spend more time reading?

Good question! The option I'd select -- "About equal time" -- isn't available, so I figured I'd bring it up here. ;) Both my online and print RPG-related reading comes in waves, with heavy times and relatively dry spells.

    In Praise of Low-Level Campaigns

On the flipside, low-level D&D characters can't do much from a rules standpoint -- unlike, say, GURPS, where a starting PC can be an expert in a couple of areas, all D&D characters are newbs for a little while. That's certainly not the only attraction to the game -- kewl powerz -- but it's one...

Black Box DM or Open Book DM?

Thanks! I had fun writing both of them. :)

Black Box DM or Open Book DM?

I wrote a post about this on Treasure Tables, my weblog for GMs: "The Bones in the Soup." In a nutshell, I laid out how I was approaching the campaign for the players -- and a few weeks into the game, I think doing so has had positive results. :)

"Do those games have torture?" and other experiences

...and that would be spam, as the link redirects to "dna-paterniti-testing.net." ;) Corrected link, with "blogspot" instead of "blogsplot": http://sebastianlewis.blogspot.com/ ;)

    Stross's Law

That's pretty much how I read it -- summarize, and hit the high notes.

    Stross's Law

I view them as being slightly different -- maybe an example will help. If I were describing the city of Waterdeep, for item 3 I'd talk about its role in the North and its status as a hub of commerce; for number 7, I might cover Undermountain, or Khelben Blackstaff's ties to the Harpers. Does...

what dnd books do you own?

I think it's a pretty safe bet that the PHB, followed by the DMG and MM, will be the top 3. ;)

    Looking for Lower Level Modules

If you have access to a good stash of Dungeon back issues, you might try using my index of 3.0 & 3.5e Dungeon adventures to narrow things down. It can be filtered by several criteria, one of which is level. :)

what dnd books do you own?

Just WotC books? WotC and third party? Either way, you're likely to get some pretty long answers -- are you curious for a specific reason, or just curious?

Prime Directive d20 is out? Anyone have it?

It's going to have to be pretty good to replace ICON and CODA Trek (from Last Unicorn and Decipher, respectively) in my book. And given that Decipher's line seems to have gone the way of the dodo, is now the best time for another Trek product?

    Stross's Law

In a recent post in his LiveJournal, Mike Mearls put forward Stross's Law of RPG Setting Design: "A setting element should never require more than two paragraphs to explain it in full." There's an explanation in his post (linked above), and I think it's a neat idea. I liked it so much that I...

How do you keep track of game time? Or do you?

That's about right for me, as well -- it's just never been that big of a deal in my games. I'd rather be thinking about a whole heap of other things than keeping track of the burn times for the party's torches. ;)

What are you taking to Gen Con?

This is the first year that I'll be flying to the con, so my goal is to bring as little as possible. From a gaming standpoint, I'm bringing my little Rook box, which holds pens, dice, index cards and other goodies, as well as a small pad (mainly to write down things I want to come back to in...

    Would/Do You Wear A D&D T-shirt In Public?

I've got loads of geeky tees, but I don't think I actually have one that says "D&D" on it. If I did, I'd happily wear it. :) Very occasionally, I'll decide a shirt probably wouldn't be the best choice for a particular situation (my old Skotos.net "Why yes, I am god" shirt tends to get this...

    Building the Campaign Website.

I found this thread while searching for something else, but I thought it was worth adding that I wrote a post about running a campaign website on my blog, Treasure Tables. TT is a weblog for GMs, and I've run a campaign website for a couple of years -- it seemed like a good topic to cover...

Having gamed with your team before is a big help -- and even if you don't win, at least you get a good game with friends out of it. ;)

    [Aug] What Are You Reading?

August has been a blast for reading: I polished up Harry Potter 6, picked up The Company again (having put it on hold for HP ;)) and started Robert's Rules of Writing. So far, so very good. :)
