What books describe a good magical world?

While it doesn't have any examples of raise dead, it does have examples of many other so-called 'game-breaking' abilities: The Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind. (Yeah, I know, not everybody's cup of tea, but I find them quite enjoyable, especially the early books and the final three.)...

    Excerpt: Multiclassing (merged)

Personally, I really like this new multiclass system. To me, the real kicker is the ability to qualify for another class' Paragon Path. (Not as a Paragon Path, but a Rogue taking Kensai for example.) That, to me, is where you'll see the real specializations. Really, the power-swapping feats...

    What's your back-up game?

Right now I'm lacking any gaming group. I'm hoping DDI fills in for that, but if for some strange reason 4e flops or I just don't like it (I don't expect either to happen, but both are technically possibilities), I'll probably try to find Star Wars Saga Edition groups through something like...

    Smuggled photos

Neverwinter Nights is probably is a better example of this than WoW. In WoW, only specific Enchants (and even more specific list of weapons) give glows. In NWN, almost every magical weapon glowed in some type or another.

    Smuggled photos

See, for me, I really like this. Though, I fully admit this is in part because of my first encounter with a magical weapon in the first fantasy novel I ever read glowed under certain conditions, (Sting, when I read The Hobbit), so to me magic weapons that glow is natural.

    Excerpts: Angels

I don't really like the mercenary approach either, but I *do* like the fact that they serve all gods. Easy enough to change for when I DM and in other games I can live with it. I really like the new look too. With the angels that are the true messengers, I'd give them an illusion ability so...

D&D 4E 4e, Gleemax, and DDI info from GAMA Trade Show

Totally agreed. I read novels for entertainment. I don't go looking for literary masterpieces, I look for books that give a fun read. I don't like every D&D novel out there, of course, but many are very entertaining.

D&D 4E 4e, Gleemax, and DDI info from GAMA Trade Show

But, at least with Forgotten Realms and Eberron, there's no reset happening. FR has changed, yes, but in a time jump forward. Discussions of historical events will just be as laden with previous edition info as before. Eberron isn't even getting a time jump, so all those old books are just as...

    FR Podcast is up

At least that's an advantage of 4e: The flattened level curve will make those novels (and Primal's plotline) make a lot more sense.

    D&D 4E Should 4e convert to metric?

As a modern-day system, I far prefer metric. It's easier to figure out and straightforward. However, for a fantasy or historical setting like D&D's settings, I prefer the imperial system because it helps give a flavour to the setting. The one exception is Eberron, but because the system has...

D&D 4E Would you buy 4E if it were not open/had no licenses for 3rd party companies?

I voted that I'd purchase it even if it wasn't open, because that's how most of the RPG games I play actually are, and it doesn't stop my enjoyment of them. However, I think it'd be a real shame if 4e was closed.

Playtest report: Hanging on a fence

I really think part of the reason you lacked spontaneous roleplay, and the whole boardgame feel in general, doesn't come from the rules... it comes from the fact that you're using pregenerated characters. Spontaneous roleplay happens when players are attached to their characters, in the mind of...

    FR Podcast is up

While I actually like that they do this in the core campaign setting, I wouldn't want to see it in any other books. To me, the 'history text-book' elements are of *far* more use than adventures I'll never play.

    D&D 4E 4E Wizard = Harry Potter Wizard?

Actually, I see more Dresden influence than Harry Potter. (Or, more likely, they draw on the same influence, which is probably Gandalf.) 4e Wizards can have multiple implements. Dresden has a staff and a blasting rod, used with different spells. 4e Wizards have rituals for spells that aren't...

    WotC_Dave: Druid!

This actually makes me look forward to that book even more than I was. I was worried about the official vs. Necromancer distinction once WotC caught up, but it sounds like that really won't be a problem.

    Pramas: D&D his way??

And that's why I'm actually interested in seeing what you come up with, where I wasn't with Pathfinder. :)

Removing the enhancement bonuses from items

It was mentioned in one of the last couple D&D podcasts that the balance is assumed that you'd have a certain overall modifier by a certain level. To do a low-magic game, getting rid of the magic item modifiers, you can just give that standard modifier as an overall level modifier instead of...

Seeking Gaming Group in Orillia, ON

As of Friday, I'll be moving back to my old home town of Orillia. Unfortunately, I left there 11 years ago and all the gamers I knew have left as well in the intervening years, and the nearest game store is in Barrie. So, I'm hoping to find gamers, or perhaps an already-formed group, I could get...
