New listings on the WotC 2007 product page!

We know a good deal about the development of various D&D and Greyhawk elements, and almost always Gary would come up with things as needed, whether for his campaign or for tournaments or publication. That's a fine method of worldbuilding. History of publication is one thing, history of creation...

How do monsters spend gold pieces?

This isn't just an incidental but a central characteristic of European dragons. They're a block to the natural flow of the world's spiritual and mundane treasure that must be removed by heroes.

224 page book on Drow yet...

In the original conception the drow worshipped various demon lords, of which Lolth was preeminent in Erelhei-Cinlu. Deities & Demigods listed her under 'ELVES, drow' in Nonhumans' Mythos, and she came to be thought of as 'the goddess of the drow' in the published Realms and, mostly, TSR's...

New listings on the WotC 2007 product page!

Lord of the Rings was your comparison! I think Wizards is handling it smarter in many ways, and I expect things to improve with the merging of the game and book teams. Still, more one-shot things have been blown in WotC's two timeline years (bodily return of Netherese and Sammaster etc. etc...

New listings on the WotC 2007 product page!

RSE is Realms-Shattering or -Shaking Event (which is the way this trilogy is being sold). Potentially it could, and the fact that a lot's conceptually at stake (not necessarily for particular PC groups, who all care most about different things) is what makes it a delicate and difficult project...

New listings on the WotC 2007 product page!

I'm sure it didn't, since Gary didn't know about the Realms till 1979 at the earliest. You said the Demonweb Pits predated the Realms; they don't. Not the whole setting, but most of the critical elements were in place by 1974; far more than a few characters.

It needn't be relevant to the adventure whether the Demonweb its considered its own plane or part of the Abyss. Incidentally I think, and Ed Greenwood agrees, that the AD&D and new Realms 'cosmologies' are better seen as two mortal interpretations of the planes than as two actual different...

New listings on the WotC 2007 product page!

The Realms has suffered 17 years of ill-conceived RSEs inflicted on it for short-term novel sales, but even so the lore (including published adventures and novels) is far more full of the small, local tales which suit it and which it was created for. So with a book that features yet another RSE...

224 page book on Drow yet...

I like drow, but no more than kuo-toa, and I dream of an alternate world where the kuo-toa became the fetish objects instead. I'd buy this book if it was specific to the Realms or the World of Greyhawk, but why should I care about this out-of-context version of drow which will likely be ignored...

My comment posted on the Candlekeep.com boards about Shadowdale: The Scouring of the Land: And about Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk: I hope so too and think it might. And I hope to read more your thoughts on all this one day. Maybe yours could be used as Castle Dyvers?

Wizards are supposed to be rich, right?

I don't understand what you're saying. Who said trade isn't worthwhile?

Wizards are supposed to be rich, right?

The most common way is investment of money gained by adventuring or spellcasting-for-hire.

Misprounced Monsters; Or... What did you call that monster, again?

'boo-LAY' was just a mistake by Frank Mentzer. TSR/Wizards could have officialized it if they'd wanted -- lots of things are different in D&D from outside D&D -- but they didn't. 'boo-LAY' is also, by the way, a hyperforeignism -- part of the American tendency to assume that foreign words...

Just got the CD with issues 1-250; What is best, IYNSHO?

There are many scattered one-off gems, which I think are best discovered by each reader. Apart from those, the great value of Dragon for me is seeing the development of AD&D and the World of Greyhawk by Gary Gygax, the Forgotten Realms by Ed Greenwood, and (to a lesser extent because of his less...

XP progression: too fast, too slow, or just right?

If you want to go through 20 levels in a 6-month campaign of weekly sessions, which is what the 3E advancement rate was devised for, it's the right speed. If your campaign will be longer, or you don't want to get to level 20, it's probably too fast. Yes, characters getting to high level in a...

What do you think WotC "owes" gamers?

And to see people quote capitalist dogma as if was some moral authority. Talk about Stockholm Syndrome. Humans, morally, should do right by each other, whether or not that makes profit for corporations! Wizards of the Coast should makes products that do what they claim and please those who buy...

What should the default setting be for 4th edition?

'No implied setting' isn't possible; even the most transparent ruleset implies things about setting, let alone one as detailed as D&D's. As ever, the designers will try to compromise between making things as flexible as possible and making the books evocative and redolent of 'D&D', because...
