    Looking ahead on the Shaman

I define decent AC as "scaling, like at all". If you don't spend a feat, your AC does not keep up with monsters, and you will be hit on a 2 quickly. And since your spirit gets attacked, you can't just hide behind your huge range. Spot-on, tertiary stat taxes suck. Also: feat taxes. It's why I...

    Looking ahead on the Shaman

I'm not necessarily begrudging the Str tax (although it's freaking annoying to have to take a feat for decent AC), it's that HAE takes an additional feat over Chain for little to no benefit. If you're not a Dwarf, it's likely HAE won't help at all, and even if you are, you're not likely to get...

    Looking ahead on the Shaman

Correct...which also requires a 13 Str. WotC could not have made Hide Armor Expertise a worse feat for Shamans if they tried. I'm not a fan. Spirit Tempest's extra healing is just the extra d6s, but remember that being adjacent to the spirit also triggers your extra boon healing. If you use...

    Looking ahead on the Shaman

Your low AC will be a problem right now, if your encounters end up anything like mine. I'd spend the feat for Chain, you only need one. (You do have to take a 13 Str, though. Them's the breaks.) I think the two biggest healing-boosting paths are Spirit Tempest and Scarred Healer, they both...

    January 2010 Editorial Calendar

Hey, the very first Shaman article! Sweet. Hopefully the Dwarf and Human articles will have fun stuff, too. Weird that they don't mention the CB/Compendium updates, I suppose they'll be on the 19th?

    Looking for a Swordmage idea

Of course, you can always grab a Khopesh.

    Goblins, the final PHB3 race?

Heh, I wouldn't say no to the Worgen, if 4e decided it really wanted to start stealing from WoW.

    Goblins, the final PHB3 race?

Dak'kon was Githzerai, though. IIRC the only Githyanki were antagonistic. I think a Githzerai Swordmage (definitely Con-based) would represent Dak'kon very well, come to think of it. EDIT: Do we actually know there're four races in PHB3? It'd be hilarious if there ended up being only three.

    Bear Shaman tips?

Vigorous and Strengthening Spirit are a good pair of feats to make your Healing Spirit better. Protector Spirit Adept (+1 to adjacent ally NADs) is solid, just remember to remind your friends so they don't forget the bonus. Resilient Spirit (+2 to spirit's defenses) is nice if enemies are trying...

    Siloing: Good or Bad?

I am unabashedly a Power Gamer. I want my characters to be as effective as possible in their chosen field, and I loathe the thought of wasting an opportunity to improve them. When I'm playing Shadowrun, every spare point possible has to be spent towards improving my hacking, because I need to...

    December Updates

@Appleseeth: What, is your other spellbook option worthless? Regardless, I suppose Grasp might have been broken, but our group had used in non-broken ways, so the nerf makes me sad. Ditto for Bloodclaw back in November (though arguably I exploited that a bit too much).

    December Updates

I just bought a Healer's Sash last week! Dammit. Oh Careful Attack, even with this, nobody's ever going to use you as their primary at-will. Poor thing. And Grasp of the Grave, after the first turn, is just an immobile, party-friendly, weaker Stinking Cloud now. Shame, I liked that one. Glad...

One more hint about gnolls on PHB3?

I think the gnoll feat is kinda cool, giving you a bit of the Barbarian (THP after bringing an enemy down, moving around for free). What doesn't make sense? Yeah, though, the non-PHB races get much less feat love in general. That's uncontested.

    Debut: Ardent

The class doesn't have an implement proficiency, so... yeah.

One more hint about gnolls on PHB3?

The Gnoll already is a player race, from Dragon--exactly like Shadar-kai. That article mentioned that some tribes were more peaceful and focused on the primal spirits, as well as gnolls that leave their feral tribes and try to become part of civilization. I'm not seeing anything to support the...

    Bear Shaman tips?

At-will? Good spirit powers include Voice of Battle (shifting as an effect) or Claws of the Eagle (give your Ranger/whatever a free attack). Since you already have a Spirit at-will, though, you might also try Spirit of the Tempest--it grants an ally a save as an effect, although it requires you...

    A 4e "fix" book...

Ooh yeah, this would be excellent. Also, I'd like a system that I've heard bandied around here, of having a noncombat class in addition to your more combat-centric one. Like Aquirer, Transporter, Face, or Scholar. More mechanical support and balance for out-of-combat scenes, instead of having...

    DMing: where's the fun?

I don't think calling prepwork "work" is necessarily bad. Picking out monsters, considering NPC next moves, planning out a fun combat environment--these things can pay off handsomely in the session, but they can be fairly unstimulating. If you enjoy doing prep as well as actually running the...

    DMing: where's the fun?

Also, I kind of mentioned this before, but you have every right as DM to pack your game full of as much Author Appeal as your players will stand. Here's my list of Stuff I Like I made before my campaign, it all ended up in there: -Towers -Spherical crystals -Gnolls -player choices -moral...

Dragon #382 - Class Acts: Druid

I like the feats enhancing the BF at-wills. Grasping Claws is quite powerful now, especially against artillery monsters.
