Okay, you asked for it... Back in 8th grade, I'd just started gaming. Right around the time of the Gulf War, we were really into the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles RPG. We had just graduated from basic D&D, so our games still looked a lot like dungeon crawls (enemies would hide in numbered...

    Reading Scrolls in armour

Nice work, Caliban! So, what about wands? Are you counting those as spell completion as well? Otherwise, you could pull the same tricks as with a scroll and 1 level of caster, plus not have to worry about caster level checks.

Spellcasting Prodigy - Whats the beef?

I ranted about the feat at first, but have grown to like it. It's really good for making a half-orc wiz or sorc functional. :D

Reincarnated as a Centaur - Doing it by the Book?

So, if a wizard were to polymorph into a centaur, would he get the 4 extra hit dice? If he was human, and he polymorphs into an elf, does he get an extra hit die? What about the mysterious sentence in the middle of the middle of reincarnation that states that the hit points of the creature...

Reincarnated as a Centaur - Doing it by the Book?

Well, the 'standard D&D rules' for the reincarnation spell have been posted already on this thread, and they do not make any mention of additional hit dice being awarded for reincarnation. And, the closest thing to an ECL is only vaguely outlined in the DMG. Now, if you could either quote the...

    Shields and Touch attacks

Doh! mikebr99 beat me to the punch. Probably cause I harassed him with the SRD in my reincarnation thread. ;)

    Shields and Touch attacks

I agree with Grazzt. But don't take my word for it, the SRD spells it out for us. Cute how they call it a shield bonus here and yet refer to it as an armor bonus everywhere else. But oh well. :)

Reincarnated as a Centaur - Doing it by the Book?

Nope. That's a house rule. By the book, you get stat mods, not the creature's base stats.

Reincarnated as a Centaur - Doing it by the Book?

The stat mods come directly from the PHB description of reincarnate. Talking wiht my friend, he mentioned that it seemed to him that the character should (logically) get the creature's base stats, but that's not the way the spell works. From the SRD: I'm trying to stick as closely to the...

Reincarnated as a Centaur - Doing it by the Book?

Re: Re: Reincarnated as a Centaur - Doing it by the Book? :) Well, actually, to clarify, he's a teacher, but not their teacher. And he doesn't run the game, they do, they just come to him for advice and some of them have sat in on our games. It's a lot of fun to play with and mentor them...

Reincarnated as a Centaur - Doing it by the Book?

This one came in from our junior league (one player is a teacher and he has a group of 7th and 8th graders that he is bringing into the game.) One of their characters (an elven sorcerer) died and the druid cast reincarnation on him. They got a good roll and scored a centaur. So, now the...

    how low do you start?

Our high-level campaign began at 8th level, and the characters were so highly min-maxed that they were machines of destruction with little personality. People just aren't as attached to the characters as they would've been if they'd started them from 1st.

    TPK or not TPK

Reminds me of a D&D joke. How my adventurers does it take to screw in a lightbulb? All of them. Never split the party!

    DMs: Are you a "plot-nazi"?

Last game, the party was going up against a devil that had been bothering them for some time. It was disguised as a former acquaintance of theirs, and they had set up a meeting to discuss some information. This devil was an osyluth with 1 level of ranger and 3 levels of a really nasty prestige...

    DMs: Are you a "plot-nazi"?

I roll my dice in front of the players, don't fudge, and generally let them do whatever they want. I generally have an idea and a set of events that I plan to have occur, and I provide opportunities and hooks for the players to get involved, but I don't think I railroad them into doing stuff...

    how high do you go?

Heh. That's true. In our high level campaign the characters were 16th level and encountered beholders. Our reaction. Oh no! Beholders. Alright, everyone be careful, do this that and the other thing, and we should survive. Turns out beholders are soap bubbles for 16th level characters. We...

    TPK or not TPK

SPOILERS FOR FORGE OF FURY! The party was searching around the dwarven fortress and managed to find a back way in. Figuring that the back door would allow them the element of surprise, that's the route they took. Unfortunately, that way lead to a deeper level of the dungeon where the...

[OT] Attention Fantasy and Genre Fiction Writers...

Well, I'm not sure how much time I'll have since I'm going back to school at the end of August, but what the heck, I'll give it a try if you'll have me. :)

    how high do you go?

Higher than 10th level is just too much of a headache IMO. When I play, I tend towards spellcasters, and to really do justice with those classes, you've got to buff your teammates and keep track of those buffs. Haste, Fly, Shield of Faith, Magic Vestment, Bull's Strength, there's a lot to lay...
