Iconic Monster Use - The Displacer Beast

I've been known to use 16 in one encounter :) I like the displacer beast, though it often has very little to do with its displacement ability. There's just something about the shoulder tentacles and six legs that bypasses goofy and nails the cool response in the depths of my subconscious.

Iconic Monster Use - The Aboleth

Never. And, to be hoenst, I can barely remember their entry in the Monster Manuals. They may have appeared in three editions, but 3e is the first time that I actually noticed they were there and served some purpose beyond being a weird aquatic mind-flayer.

    From obscurity to major players

The Korpru in the Isle of Dread. Somehow I find the current 3.5 incarnation of the monster somewhat...unsatisfying. Ettien D'Amberville from the Known World, with all the wonkiness that is the radiance in full effect. The drow sorcerer who appeared in the 3.0 DMG wielding a staff of the...

How do you encourage players to use Level Adjusted races?

My group's with Henry's, although recently there's been a trend towards using Prestige Classes to get the same effects (via Dragon Desciple, Fey-Druid homebrews, etc). But there's still at least one player whose only played kobolds and gnolls for nearly four years now.

Tell me your great campaign ideas!

The PC's are a team of researchers and journalists affiliated with a website devoted to the examination of urban myths and Fortean phenomena. Over the course of the campaign, they're assigned missions to research and catalogue the validity of any number of urban myths (aligators in the sewers...

    Constructs as PCs

The d20 Future rules contain information about android PC's which are fairly easy to adapt to DnD. You can get them as part of the SRD if you're not up for buying d20 modern material.

How often have you used Beholders?

Once. I made an effort to put them into an adventure because they were big and iconic monsters that I've never used. After the party mopped the floor with it in a single round without major damage, I shrugged and figured they didn't have enough bang for the complication of using them.

Can't connect to the URL, only the IP

It would appear that Capellan is having the same problem. Hasn't been able to connect from his PC in a couple of days, and he's already disabled his firewall and checked with his provider to make sure it's not a DNS issue.

Combat on a ship at sea... how?

Watch a bunch of pirate movies and take notes. Ships have anchors and ropes that are likely to provide an easy entrance to climbing creatures, and they can always use rope and grapples (giving them a Climb DC of 0 and the ability to take 10 and scale the side of the ship with an accelerated...

    Anything you can recommend?

    1) Steer your dragon-oriented player towards the sorcerer class and the Dragon Desciple prestige class. 2) Borrow one of the two draconic player character races in Arcane Evolved - they port over to DnD fairly well with only minor rules tinkering. In either case, I'd make sure that the...

    Adventure Brainstorming (Low Level)

An evil gnome aristocrat covets the Monk's land, so he's having his minions paint the flowers usually serviced by the bees with a foul alchemical ocncoction that taints the mead.

    Elves or Dwarves?

ELAN! Because when elves go psychic, they're just humans who've had a few to many modifications at the body shop.

Spiked Chains: Pure cheese or sometimes OK?

To be honest, I have no beef with the Spiked Chain. It may not be realistic, but it does have the potential to be fun. And despite its alleged twinkiness, I've never seen a player use one. Even after seeing how effective they can be in the hands of NPC's.

What Makes a Convention Game Great?

Think really carefully about your first scene. I'll often put three times as much effort into the openining thirty minutes of a one shot as I will the rest of the session, since that first scene is really the space I have to ease players into the tone and style of the game they're playing. At...

Exit 23 Winter Demon, in d20 Modern?

When I ran it, I converted the stats for a Winter Wolf from the d20 Fantasy SRD. AFter that, it was a simple matter of giving it damage reduction 10/silver, immunity to cold, and the ability to transform into a cloud of snow as a move-action (treated as gaseos form with a faster fly speed). I...

Why I like DMing D&D more than other games.

I'm inclined to agree, although I'd ammend the core statement to "I find DnD easier to run for long campaigns." There are a lot of games that I enjoy running as much as DnD, but rarely do I run them long-term. I generally find it easier to create variations on DnD's core theme over 30+...

Worst Value for Money RPG Purchase

An Indie RPG called Starchildren. I picked it up because I loved the concept, but the mechanical side of things dropped the ball and set-up the wrong mood for the game. While I've got many other games that suffer from similar flaws and struggled with them for a time, I was just a little to...

    X-PATH 2 : The Forge of F.U. (Completed 15 April 2005)

He was. He came back a couple of months ago, then left again, then came back. I think he just does it to confuse everyone.

    Feeble Eberron Animal Companions

Feeble is a matter of perspective. In a campaign I ran, the druid wasted a large chunk of his spell-power casting spider climb on his wolf companion every time the low-level party needed to climb somewhere. He also ran into huge problems trying to sneak it into civilized areas. The ranger who...

    Counterspelling -- Does It Work?

I've seen it done a couple of times, primarily by sorcerers who have dispel magic slots to burn. It's particularly popular during mexican-standoff scenes against enemy spellcasters, when the players want to stop the bad-guy from casting a teleport or similar magic.
