    Level Up (A5E) Martial Maneuvers

How do other people envision martial maneuveres? I'd like to see something like Battlemaster maneuvers and superiority dice available to all martial classes. A standardised system, like spell slots are for casters. Different classes could have a list of maneuvers they could learn that fit the...

    Level Up (A5E) Spending gold

I like the idea of mundane masterwork equipment granting properties rather than a +1. I'd like to think a dwarven masterwork weapon was different to elven weapon. Shoddy equipment would also be great for starting out characters, you've just got what ever you mustered out of the malitia with...

Level Up (A5E) End the 5 minute work-day by making all classes work off short rests.

Something like wizards' Arcane Recovery. Remove it being once per long rest. Add "each time you use this feature you regain one less level of spells, minimum 1" . That way the wizard can keep getting something out of short rests, but with diminishing returns.

Level Up (A5E) Do Player Characters Have Average Population Stat Distributions?

Is an orc stronger because of biology, or because their culture promotes fighting and raiding? Are halflings weaker because they lead placid, pastoral lives? Do high elves have bigger brains or do their cultures promote education and study more than others? You could lower small creatures...

Level Up (A5E) End the 5 minute work-day by making all classes work off short rests.

Since Second Wind does more healing than hit dice after you've gained a handful of levels, you are not losing anything by burning the hit dice and gaining free hit points. Adding Action Surge on top of that would be way over the top. You can't guarantee a particular class will be front or back...

Level Up (A5E) End the 5 minute work-day by making all classes work off short rests.

I think using hit dice to refresh powers would be unbalancing for the split of front line vs back line characters. Characters in the thick of melee will generally take more hits and need to spend more hit dice on recovery. Those at the back will have more resources to spend on fueling abilities...

Level Up (A5E) End the 5 minute work-day by making all classes work off short rests.

I think having a solid, in world definition of when to refresh is necessary, be it a 5 minute or 1 hour rest. It is easy for "encounters" to get messy at times, so you lose track of when you can or can't refresh. I also like managing resources between refreshs. If I can use an ability 3 times...

Level Up (A5E) End the 5 minute work-day by making all classes work off short rests.

Just added to players I think. If it was added to foes the benefits would be cancelled out, reinforcing the desire for more rests. Momentum needs to give characters an edge. I had considered it a flat bonus to keep it simple, I wouldn't want to need an extra chart to need to keep on hand, but...

Level Up (A5E) End the 5 minute work-day by making all classes work off short rests.

I think the balance would be in hit points. Unless you have a lot of healing spells, wands, potions, etc, you'll eventually need a short rest to spend hit dice. Momentum could also be capped at some point (maybe 5), so you aren't getting mega bonuses. I did think of it in terms of 13th Age...

Level Up (A5E) End the 5 minute work-day by making all classes work off short rests.

How about a Momentum mechanic. The parties momentum increases after each scene that they move closer to their objective, either fighting, social, exploration. When they take a rest, momentum drops back to 1. Each class could have some at will feature tied to momentum so that it gets better as...

Level Up (A5E) End the 5 minute work-day by making all classes work off short rests.

I agree that better design is needed, all classes should benefit from both short and long rests. Managing how often they are taken is outwith the designers power, unless they tie it directly to something like short rest every 2 encounters, long every 6, but that feels too meta for me. DMs will...

Level Up (A5E) End the 5 minute work-day by making all classes work off short rests.

I suppose whatever the refresh rate on abilities is, there will be players who burn through everything and want a refresh after every encounter. Doesn't matter if it is short, long, 5 minutes or a week, they'll want that refresh. In that situation is say its on the adventure designer to account...

    Level Up (A5E) Class redesign

Can more classes have flavourful ability refresh triggers? A few wizard subclass abilities refresh on casting a spell of their associated school, rather than on a short or long rest. It helps them lean into the focus of the subclass. Monks are almost there, they refresh on a short rest...

Level Up (A5E) End the 5 minute work-day by making all classes work off short rests.

I like a mix of short and long rest resets. If every class had a better mix, there wouldn't be such a strong push from certain classes to retreat for a long rest all the time. Alternatively, give more classes abilities which reset on other triggers. Some wizard subclasses reset abilities when...

    Level Up (A5E) Deadlier combat

I've played healers in 3e, 4e and 5e. I enjoyed 4e most because when I healed I knew they were not going to instantly drop again, 25% HP from a surge + a little extra kept them on their feet generally. It only cost my minor action, so I could still use any of my other powers that round. I...

    Level Up (A5E) Multiclass Subclasses

A unified subclass system would be good for multiclassing but also to make some subclasses that any character could take. 4E had paragon paths with a variety of prerequisits. Some were class specific, some race, and some could be taken by any character.

    Level Up (A5E) Class redesign

Are there some class features too intrinsically linked to a class to remove? Is a Barbarian without Rage just a Fighter or (spelless) Ranger? Could I have a Burglar Rogue who doesn't know how to expertly shank someone with Sneak Attack? Hunter's Mark and Curse were key components of Ranger and...

    Level Up (A5E) Class redesign

Also a fan of 4e, but the Utility powers were very unfocused. They were more likely to give you a choice of combat, exploration and social at the same level, leading to players picking up nothing but combat powers. The idea of a specific level giving choices that match only one pillar seems...

    Level Up (A5E) Class redesign

Would all classes follow the same pattern, or different depending on the classes playstyle? Eg Bards get social at 1st, exploration at 2nd, combat at 3rd, Fighters get Combat at 1st, Exploration at 2nd, Social at 3rd? What would the mix of subclass features be in this? An even split, 4/2...

    Level Up (A5E) Spending gold

The options always seem to boil down to build a castle or buy/craft magic items (or masterwork mundane items). I'm all for domain stuff if it fits the campaign. If it doesn't you are left with magic items, but 5E kind of assumes no magic mart. For Crafting, people seem more excited by...
