    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

I agree and should have said 5e mechanical approach instead of style. You are right though I'd argue some mechanics support some styles better than others.

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

Well that would be one assumption. I'm not sure it's right or wrong. I think if getting a game were super easy, that the distribution would spread out over multiple playstyles. Maybe the current 5e style would still have a plurality of votes but I doubt it would have an absolute majority like...

Nothing I said disputes that if you read my whole post.

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

At it's root you are talking about story vs game. And RPG has both to varying degrees and where you set the dial determines your preference. Other than low levels, I don't see irrevocable death being a thing in D&D in any edition.

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

You have to agree though that D&D has an enormous brand recognition advantage over almost every other game system. A lot of D&D players likely have never even heard of games ranked 4th and beyond in sales. Some probably don't even know of Pathfinder though that is rarer. These boards are not...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

I don't think that was the point at all. The point was that D&D was unoffensive to enough people to get groups. Meaning everyone liked it well enough so grouping is easy. The game you really like is perhaps not everyone's cup of tea. So you can't get a group. For roleplaying, D&D has to be...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

I think a lot of people live in a bubble. They don't even realize other opinions have wide acceptance and in rarer but not insignificant cases majority opinion. I travel a good bit and have done so a lot more in the past. I also move in different circles within my own local culture. I can...

No. I was responding by giving a general statement on my overall position in light of what you had said.

Major league self censor. Not because of societal pressure necessarily.

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

My point then would be to say -- when someone says something makes THEM feel a certain way it is fine. When people say it IS that way objectively then that is not best. I often put "I feel" in front of those sentences giving the benefit of the doubt as I'm sure I've said such things myself in...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

That would destroy my game. In fact I wouldn't bother starting it.

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

It is a trap for inexperienced DMs. If I allowed such a background into my campaign, I'd figure out who their family was and how they fit into the world. I'd have to do that running the sort of game I run. I think though that some degree of family tree planning has to be done anyway if the...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

A lot of this comes down to what does the player know vs what does the character know. The character knows more about many things than the player and the player knows things the character doesn't also. Sometimes when it comes to knowledge about the world that the character knows and the...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

For him it is groan inducing. For many it probably is but for others it is not. Yes he used derogatory language as you do often. But he is showing how it makes him feel. Why he rejects it is that it produces that groan inside him that the whole thing is a farce. I would agree with him on...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

Well, if you chose a background that realistically have you a chance to know more people, then I would roll for it against some DC. I wouldn't just say yes every single time. The player would say to the DM, "Do I know anyone in this town?" Personally, I'd prefer to work that out ahead of...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

And I would heartily disagree with you about flat characters and hollow societies. In fact, what I have experienced is just the opposite. A DM running the world the way you run it would to me not be doing the work and the world would not ring true.

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

I'll just say here. If you mean DM control of the setting outside the player characters then yes. That is a playstyle and I want it whether I am a player or a DM. If you mean a person as a human being is obsessed with control then I disagree. Obviously they might overlap but they don't have...

D&D General Just sweeping dirty dishes under the rug: D&D, Sexism, and the '70s

I agree. One big problem is we take "alignment" as we see it today and press it back on a middle age culture. The fact is by today's standards no one is remotely good in the middle ages. This is partly why Law and Chaos factor so much more largely in societies than Good and Evil. The...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

And my experience has been when a group reached the highest levels 17+, that some PCs had not died at all, some had died twice, and others up to four times. Death is usually a factor of player skill and to a lesser degree class. I thought 2 to 3 times a campaign would work assuming the...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

Being harder does not mean dying more necessarily. It means feeling "fear" for your character and being in more doubt about the outcome at least initially. I have never played 5e but in some prior versions of D&D, if you died you really weren't trying or the DM was rewriting the rules.
