(OT sort of) Help dealing with a player over the edge

Man, I'm surprised at the number of people who would casually just waive this off as "okay". Sounds like a warning sign to me, if indeed this story is true and it isn't a troll. If this kid blew his brains out 2 years from now because he couldn't deal with reality, I'd like to hear some of these...

The Abyss: Infinite or 666 layers?

I've been reading the book of vile darkness, and came upon the Demon Lords and the Abyss. Several times it says the layers are infinite. Am I the only one who doesn't share that view? Somewhere along the way, I thought that someone had the Abyss at 666 layers. I subscribe to that theory rather...

(OT sort of) Help dealing with a player over the edge

Re: Well, since you asked. forgive me, but that's a little irresponsible. he might not be hurting anyone else, but there sure is the potential he could be hurting himself by slipping into an unhealthy fantasy world. Your parallelling of the world's popular religions to those based on a...

(OT sort of) Help dealing with a player over the edge

maybe start joking around a little more at the table. start to clue him in that the reason you guys are all playing is for the fun of it and to blow off steam. if he doesn't start to come around, have a private talk with him and tell him he either snaps out of it or he doesn't play for a while...

    When does CN become CE?

well, if you're a stickler for alignments, lay the hammer down on him right away - if it'll do any good. the overwhelming portion of players that pick CN as an alignment are just using it as an excuse to act like amoral monsters. yada yada yada, same old same old. this is one of the eternal...

A Question for those with long-running Birthright campaigns

Ooops, sorry about that Tallarn. :) One thing I neglected to put in my update was a sword and crown summit that occured just before Aubrey's failed takeover. In that summit, Heirl Diem raised a hue and cry that the central region's needs were not being addressed by the eastern king (his rival...

A Question for those with long-running Birthright campaigns

That is the ultimate allure of Birthright to me. It's not for everyone, but when the political machinations are done by a skilled DM, few systems are better.

A Question for those with long-running Birthright campaigns

Okay here goes some more detail on my campaign: Adam Bannier, started out as an acolyte of Haelyn and Friend to Prince William Moergan II. They teemed up with a beautiful young singer named Lisell Bellamy and a follower of Eric (druid) named Alana. Those 4 formed the core of the first...

A Question for those with long-running Birthright campaigns

I love that! great detail in your campaign, by the way. It sounds quite interesting. This is the response I was hoping for - to see how the campaigns have turned out differently. If I get the gumption, I'll try to post some more detail on mine, too. Baked into bread - classic!

A Question for those with long-running Birthright campaigns

Did you find the non regent game most enjoyable? I know that, other than those first characters, my players have always been adventuring characters who were related to regents etc. Which is why we never delved too deep into the domain system. also, did you ever test drive the war card system...

A Question for those with long-running Birthright campaigns

I play now just for the setting and history of the campaign. Really, we don't even mess around with the domain rules - though they'd be pretty useless now that there is a unified empire, anyway. FYI, Marlae is a very strong NPC my world. While the emperor rules from the Iron Throne, 3 "Kings"...

Are your players allowed to play 'special' characters?

same here. in my campaign, i think "elf" qualifies as special. :)

A Question for those with long-running Birthright campaigns

thanks dave. :) I think many long running campaigns build up a nice history and detail. The thing about Birthright is that there is a common foundation for all campaigns. I would just love to hear how others have dealt with some of the characters and plotlines from the boxed sets.

A Question for those with long-running Birthright campaigns

I have run a Birthright campaign, on and off, since its release in 1995. The timeline has been advanced 30 years in that time (now 581 mr), to accomodate 3 "generations" of Birthright characters. In my campaign, the Empire has been reformed under the banner of one of my 1st generation player's...

What was your first ever D&D product?

Same here. I can still picture it in my head, the day I got it. For my 12th Birthday, I think. I still use the D20, affectionately referred to as "widowmaker" by my players. The boxed set, however, is lost to the ages.

    The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant

On four separate occasions over the space of 16 years, i've tried to get through Lord Foul's Bane. I've never made it to the end. I really wanted to like the book, but there's something that keeps me from finishing it. Yeah, the hero is really sort of a sleazeball, but that's not it. Some things...

"Speaker in Dreams" is one of the twinkiest adventures ever written

On the contrary, if you and your players dig this style - I think the adventure could be fit into Ptolus with little or no fuss. I know Monte's view on this stuff is "why hide magic, it exists and should be used". In essence, and in the words of my good friend Teflon Billy, "magic has all the...

"Speaker in Dreams" is one of the twinkiest adventures ever written

Impressive, most impressive! :) Well, we all know that Ed Greenwood is the spiritual father of all things twinkish. I bow before the true master.
