Why Did The Cleric Have Spells?

Since originally all weapons did 1d6 damage, I think the limitation on weapons was more to keep the cleric from claiming magic items the game intended to go to fighters. It amounts to the same thing, though. The best, most common magic weapons were swords giving the fighting-men an advantage in...

Why Did The Cleric Have Spells?

Looking at oD&D, it seems clear to me that mechanically the cleric was the fighter/magic-user. The class was given different spells to further distinguish it from magic-user. To give it more of a unique role in the group. According to Mike Mornard, the cleric first appeared in Blackmoor...

    Gaming Pride / Gaming Shame

With my co-workers, you are going to be teased. Might as well be for who you are. Or what you do.

    Dan's Diminutive d20

Call ’em “healing herbs”. I liked the system Rolemaster had for foraging for them, though it may have been a bit complex. Could be good inspiration for a simpler system, though.

    Hybrid System Question or Opinion.

For me, that’s the whole idea. I want things to be much more predictable, though without tossing the dice altogether. You have to get the feel for setting DCs. Something you might have set higher on a d20 should maybe be lower for 3d6.

    Hybrid System Question or Opinion.

I like 2d10 better than 1d20, but I like something with more of a curve even better. Mid20: Roll 3d20 and drop the the high die and low die. (Use the middle result.) 4d6: Read sixes as zeros. 3d6: From Unearthed Arcana. Another thing I’ve tried (with both GURPS and D&D) is d20 for combat and...

    Dan's Diminutive d20

I don’t know about Delta, but I think I have something of a complexity limit. When I simplify rules, it allows more complexity in flavor. Sometimes I consider money more flavor than rules.

    "Exceptional" House Rules

I’ve become big on way of thinking. If a player wants something exceptional, I’ll do my best to accommodate it with a few caveats: (1) You’re going to have to pay for it and expect I’ll err on the side of overcharging. (2) I reserve the right to adjust things on-the-fly. (3) This is no guarantee...

    The Ultimate (A)D&D Kitbash

My main choice is B/X and stealing little bits from everything else. Not really importing any subsystem wholesale from another edition so much as just borrowing things ad hoc. If I ever wanted to separate race and class, I think I’d start with 2e w/o the optional rules. That means only the main...

    Gaming Pride / Gaming Shame

I play role-playing games...you know...like D&D. Dungeons & Dragons Nope. Face-to-face. Pencils, paper, & dice. At that point there’s a 50/50 chance of conversation over or...they’re actually intrigued and ask more about it. By the way, I’m constantly amazed at the number of people who...

Player Skill - what is it?

If I’ve set up clues the players are going to instantly recognize (lots of petrified people means a medusa nearby) then I suppose I just expect them to. If I don’t want them to recognize such things, then I try to change things up and so that I’m not exactly following what they expect. When the...

    Cheating cheaters

While I may not be on-board with “valid playstyle” or the pysch angle, I do think they’re only damaging themself. They know what they’re doing and probably aren’t proud of it. They probably know the suspicion they’re engendering and aren’t proud of that either. Even if they don’t know, they are...

Player Skill - what is it?

There have been some good descriptions already. To me, a classic example are riddles. The player and the PC inhabit different worlds, are part of different cultures, and probably speak different languages. Not to mention having different mental faculties. A player could nigh never solve a truly...

    Gaming Pride / Gaming Shame

I decided long ago that I shouldn’t care what other people think about me and I shouldn’t be ashamed to be who I am. I’m a nerd/geek/whatever-term-you-want-to-use. I’m proud of it. Of course, I’m human. I don’t always live up to those ideals, but I think I do pretty well. I’ve seldom felt lack...

    How did pre-3E D&D "play"?

I’m talking more about approach to the game than what rules we’re using. Everyone in my group has a somewhat “middle school” approach. (Not entirely “old school”, but certainly not entirely “new school”.) e.g. While 3e made it possible to take the DM out of the equation, we put him back in. We...

    How did pre-3E D&D "play"?

I’m not so sure 3e really changed things. The way many people around her describe how their group plays 3e seems significantly different from how my group plays it.

Splitting the market (Forked from: What D&D is to me, in terms of editions.)

Sure. Even the AD&D Monster Manual used base 9 AC.

Splitting the market (Forked from: What D&D is to me, in terms of editions.)

Forked from: What D&D is to me, in terms of editions. My impression is that AD&D was significantly more popular in the USA and UK while (non-A) D&D was more popular (or perhaps merely easier to get—especially in translated form) elsewhere. Furthermore... The vast majority of people I knew...

If your group didn't like 4e...

We’re trying 4e, but so far nobody really seems to like it. “Switch” doesn’t really apply to us, as we play whatever system/edition the current GM wants to run. We’re eclectic.

4E D&D - Are you playing already (or ever)?

I voted, “I own 4E books, but have only played a one-shot or a few test sessions.” I really only own the PHB. I think we’ve got 4 PHBs in the group, but only 1 each of the DMG and MM.
