    When PCs break the law

For the most part reinforcing what was already said: 1. Discuss this with the players out of game. If in your game world, Lawful means no breaking any laws then make sure the players understand that. If Good means only with a "good" reason, make sure the players understand what some of those...

    Folklore/Mythology is your game?

And I really enjoy what you've been doing with fairytales and folktales. You really should publish that stuff.

    Folklore/Mythology is your game?

I've been playing D&D for 30 years now. And in that time, I've found the vast majority of new fantasy/folklore/mythology cannot even come close to inspiring me the way Tolkein, Howard, Lovecraft, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Medieval romances, Germanic sagas, etc. have and still do. A few months ago...

How to talk like a dwarf.

In the LoTR movie, Gimli is played by a Welshman, John Rhys-Davies whose Shakespearian trained voice booms through almost every role he's played (Sliders, Indiana Jones, Shogun, etc.). Personally, I've always thought Dwarves spoke with a Yiddish accent. ;)

    Limiting Magic

I'd also grant all spellcasters all of the metamagic feats that cost additional levels for free. After all, they're already paying the cost in terms of the higher level spells and now they have a use for the higher level spell slots. In addition, take a look at the incantation rules from...

    Favorite 2e modules?

Night of the Walking Dead is awesome. Hands down my favorite Ravenloft and 2nd Edition module. Touch of Death comes in second and The Created comes in third. My favorite part of The Created is when the PCs become marionettes! While checking my collection, I realized that the only modules I...

Ryan Dancey to self-publish tabletop RPG

For those ENworlders who don't get the joke, Ryan Dancey is the 'Father of the OGL.' He also founded and runs the Open Gaming Foundation.

    Gygaxian Monsters

Thanks a lot Gary for dropping in and giving us some insightful answers. In OD&D there is a monster table listing a "Thoul" with 7 hit dice but no description until the Basic D&D set (Moldavay version IIRC). Was the Thoul a typo? Or a monster that got cut from the original rules?

    Gygaxian Monsters

Except that Snorri Sturlasson's description had nothing about Svartalfr having some characteristics of black widow spiders, e.g. females larger and more powerful than males and worshipping a black widow spider-goddess. Or shooting hand crossbows for that matter. In addition, many scholars...

    Gygaxian Monsters

Just for fun, I thought I'd write up a list of monsters that as far as I can tell were created by Gygax and not borrowed from another source. Using this criteria, rust monsters are in (inspired by a cheap plastic toy) but the gorgon is out (the bull form appears in a late Medieval bestiary)...

    OGL/SRD questions

I Am Not A Lawyer. A careful reading of the d20 license and the Open Gaming License indicates that all d20 content is Open Gaming Content (OGC) whereas all OGC is not d20. The d20 or not d20 is simply whether or not you choose to use the d20 logo and/or declare compatablity with D&D. Doing so...

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

I agree that this is certainly the case for the Celtic mythology with strange creatures being from the Otherworld. But I don't think the Greeks thought that way. Granted all of their strange creatures had one or both parents that were not Human but most were not natives of another world...

    capping D&D at 5th level?

Posting article on behalf of Sean (hope he doesn't mind): I think on Sean's boards there was a discussion about changing the progression from monthly shared with spouse to seasonal. Spring and Autumn were CR 1, Summer CR 1/2, and Winter CR 2. I ran the numbers starting 1st level at age 16...

    A New Take on Metamagic

That's a house rule that Sean K. Reynolds put in place for his 3.0 game. I tried it out for a 3.0 campaign and it worked fine for the SRD metamagic feats. Some of the other metamagic feats like twining, etc. I'd keep as feats.

    Rethinking Alignment

QFT. This is the key here. Replace the alignment system with a religious belief or allegiance system. Additional points to keep in mind: Historically, ethnic groups identified themselves by ethnicity rather than by religion. The Irish would raid Scotland and Wales and be raided in turn even...
