Stephen Colbert talks D&D and LOTR on Conan O'Brien

I read The Simarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien once. Seriously, i read "The Simarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien". The cover was as far as I got before I fell asleep. Though, it takes a big man to admit getting Geek-own3d.

SPOILER Now, If I was a pirate with that kind of curse, here's what I would have done. -keep the gold all in one place. -Everybody take a coin, we're going out raiding. -Whee! invulnerable undead piraty goodness! -Okay, pull yourselves together. We do the ritual blah blah blah.. -Same time...

Do you assume 'healing' is readily available, and if so, how does it affect play?

Okay... my players Were recently in quite a bind. The only healer in the party is a dragon shaman, as a result, they can get up to half hitpoints, and no higher. So, on their way back to join with the main invasion body (Dragonstar, they are part of an invasion force that is supposed to take...

    Short Setting Ideas

    6. Take your typical D&D world, and advance technology by one level. Basic firearms. What is the result? Chaos. With even the most humble of farmers able to either purchase or manufacture black powder weaponry, those who are in power have the most to fear.

    Short Setting Ideas

    2. There is currently a social revolution going on in the Dwarven community. Female dwarves are beginning to express their sexuality, much to the confusion of the traditionally gender-repressive and male-centric dwarven culture. Dwarves do not have a pronoun for "she", or any feminine gender...

    101 Fantasy Government Secrets

    74. The King is an impostor. He was an actor that was grabbed up by the council after the real king died without leaving an heir many years ago. The only people who know are the council and the Queen, but she's quite happy with her "play-king" and wouldn't let anyone know.

CSI: Sharn (Help create 100 corpses)

Actually, it's based on a Bavarian Tourist who died on vacation in Jamaca, and then his corpse went missing. Ten years later, some Hungarian laborers were kicking back after a hard day of working, and one of them cracks open an aged cask of rum. Guess where the tourist's body had gone :D The...

    Pirates of the Caribbean

We're just goofing around David. Seriously, I think that it was bad enough that they named the bad guy "Davey Jones". I mean, the original movie was so brilliantly original, and they scuttled it's sequel with a cheesy pirate-y name :p bad game master. They might as well make the next enemy...

    Telling a story vs. railroading

I'll give you guys a classic example of railroading: Final Fantasy 7. Aeris dies. no matter what you do, no matter how you play and how many buffs you give to Aeris, she dies. It's not something the player has any control over. Conversely, In other games, like, let's say, the Fire Emblem...

    Not Wanting to Kill Characters

Twice. I had a GM who was storyteller first, GM second. Resulted in a lot of NPC's that were way, way, WAY more interesting than we were. In the whole duration of the campaign, one PC died, the GM's Significant Other's paladin. after that, it became D&D for kids. Blah.

Tips on Streamlining for a Very Large Party?

Stop right there fool... this is a recipe for disaster, and burnout. My advice? talk to the players (all 10 if you can) and ask if any of them want to form a second gaming group, playing as a second DM. There, you just split the party down to "regular" size. Trust me, i had the same problem...

    Counterspelling -- Does It Work?

As a GM, yes. I once stopped a 10th level wizard cold with a 6th level kobold sorcerer. The Wizard didn't want to waste his big spells on the kobolds, so he chose to chuck a fireball, the sorcerer (who was hidden) saw the wizard prepping and counterspelled. Wizard is confused, tries Lightning...

WotC releases for March 2007: Cormyr, Magic Items, Star Wars RPG

Yeah, i've seen lots of nifty magic items in other books that I regretted using because they weren't on any treasure table. Now, as long as this MIC contains a treasure table for wonderous items, all should be good.

when there is no other way than online

If all you want is the grid, why not use virtual gametable? it has something most of the other suggested programs lack: It's FREE! Learning curve is non-existent. Drag & drop hallways and room sections, or just doodle straight to the battlemap with the pen feature. all players can see it...

    Automatic literacy for PCs

Oh, i see. I voted according to the traditional rules of D&D (everyone's literate 'cept barbarians) Okay, permit the feat requirement... BUT also permit "retraining" (in the PHBII, there are basic rules that allow you to change the feat selections, level selections, and many other things...
