Pirates of the Caribbean

The look to us is mind flayer because we're use to it. But for the reader it probably reminds one more of one of the creations of Lovecraft which is far older than wotc, d and d and most of us enworlders ;).

So, then, who inspired the guy with the conch for a head? :)
It was a riff off the same idea. "OK, we've need someone who's like the devil but who lives under the sea. Duh. Cthulhu. But dress him up like a pirate. There's your visual design. For his cronies? Uh... well, Cthulhu's got an octopus head, right? Let's do other undersea creature / human hybrids and we're good to go."

I would probably bet money that that's a broadly accurate summary of the early design discussions.

The best lesson from the movie is that any D&D adventure would be better with an undead monkey.

I have a question about that undead monkey. Perhaps someone here has an answer. How did the monkey remain undead when the curse was lifted and everyone else turned back to normal?

Do you have the Pirates I DVD? Watch it again. Let it run through the credits; watch the little scene at the very end.

SPOILER
The monkey comes back down, and steals one gold coin at the very end
Now, If I was a pirate with that kind of curse, here's what I would have done.

-keep the gold all in one place.
-Everybody take a coin, we're going out raiding.
-Whee! invulnerable undead piraty goodness!
-Okay, pull yourselves together. We do the ritual blah blah blah..
-Same time next week?
