Have you ever seen a wizard not maxed out?

I agree with Emirikol. This rule kind of stops low Int spellcasters. 11 int, means he can only cast 1st level spells. Maxed out is one thing, not being able to cast anything higher than 1st level spells is a big hidderence. If you applied the same idea to fighters, a fighter with str 11, can...

Party creation instead of character creation?

One of the things I've tried is have an advert ." Adventures required for assisting wizard with location of artifact, etc." And then tell the players create a character that would apply for that job. And it worked pretty well. I got three excellent characters . The fourth players wanted to play...

DM's: How do you deal with powergamers?

I had a similar situation , where the power gamer left in a big ,loud, fit. I'd have a chat with him. Before something goes wrong. The smart ideas, and solutions to difficult problems are an asset to everyone. But trying to mini/max other peoples characters can be annoying.

    Using races differently from stereotypes

The last homebrew campaign I ran. I had elves as tribal horsemen/barbarians. Halflings as scheming merchanst/moneylenders urban orientated race. And dwarves as a civilised roman style empire.

Some players don’t want to build characters…

I've experience some of what Obergnom is talking about. And I think its only a problem at higher levels. An example that comes to mind. Was a four character party that got as high as 16th level. Shadow wizard, saint/cleric , rogue and a drow chaos paladin. The wizard and cleric we're fairly...

    selling 3.5

There are a number of different problems here. The first is your rotating the DM. With my current group the players who don't know 3.5 , don't worry about what rules they play they just ask the DM. So ithink to sell 3.5 you may have to stay as DM for a while. Second. Multi system players...

    Adventure Ideas

I'm looking for some adventure ideas. The party has to make a long trip through the underdark. I'd like the party to go up a level during the trip. There 5th level now. However I don't want too big a distraction, or a series of random encounters, or just a bunch of combat, or anything that...

    A powergamer in a non-powergame.

My advice is leave the rulebook at home, and go with the flow. Forget what the best thing to do is, go with what the Dm lets you do. If he throws dice to decide what to do, keep suggesting ideas until you get a good dice throw. Role play more, and fight less. You may end up dead , but you'll...

    Anti dwarf traps

The context for the traps is FR based. The party are geading for the sargauth encalve, after the fall of nethellese, and before it becomes skullport. The description from the FR books, is that the area is magically sealed to prevent dwarven intrusions. So i'm looking at arcane spells , that work...

    Joe Average Stats, class recomendations?

Try a barbarian, with the 13 in str. I played one with stats of str 14,dex 10, con 7 int 11, wis 11 , cha 11 The d12 gives you plenty of hit points, and the rage boosts you strength.

What happens when when a large creature wins a bull rush and pushes back a medium creature, and another medium creature is in the path of the large creature? (See diagram) M1 M2...

    Skill points as a reward...

I've given out skill ranks as a reward. I normally limit it, by deciding what skill they get or by not letting them increase skills they already have. And there been no problem with this. I'm not sure a large amount wouldn't unbalence some classes soemwhat though

    D&D and the Implied Setting

One of the key things to opening my mind to possibilities. Was Paul Kemps shadow series of books. Which is very FR D&D.

Can you use a feint to

My inital thinking was to get the target to use up its AOO , so that a action like sunder or grapple etc could be used against the target, not neccessairly by the bluff character, without causing an AOO. And because the target has the option of taking or not taking the bluff . The effect is limited.

Can you use a feint to

My thinking was more along the lines of bluff. Also the target doesn't have to take the AOO.

Could you use a feint to provoke an AOO, so the target wastes an AOO?

Dungeon layout, map flow and old school game design

Doesn't this assume the monsters stay put in their encounter location. Certainly in the adventures I run. Monsters move about.

Is The Sinister Secret of Saltmarsh a well-designed adventure module?

I believe U1 to be an excellent module. Although I agree Ned can be problematic for some groups. An adaption I made the last time I ran U1. Was to make Ned a missing adolecant, for whom the party are searching. Hence the reason the explore the house. Which seemed to work better.
