    Tell me about Dragon Age

The density of modern games is a barrier. I have a very forgiving group but mastering rules that are this long isn't a small issue. Worse is how I keep confusing 4E and Pathfinder action rules. So I agree that this was a major plus of the rules.

    The Vampie Class preview

I think that 3.5E's multi-classing system worked out poorly (in the long run) and the Trailblazer system isn't a great patch. But the mix and match system was still better than the LA system. Certainly I think the idea of doing vampires as a 30 level class is really cool and seems to balance...

    Tell me about Dragon Age

I think the lack of variety in creatures is due to the single sourcing of the largest group of villians. That did not bother me as much. Map recycling did get a bit noticeable, though.

In praise of the rules lawyer

Nope. I don't always make perfect calls and my memory is suboptimal. I am happy to alter a ruling if it seems unreasonable or incorrect. After all, the game is about having fun and being treated unfairly is definitely unfun.

    Tell me about Dragon Age

The computer game had a great atmosphere (very British Isles and the cultural connection with dogs was a nice detail). I very much liked the way that they worked in some interesting limitations for Mages and the cultural questions that these limits brought up. The game was well done, with a...

Dragon Age 2: Best Gender/Class Choice for Story

I was amazed as it was happening.

Dragon Age 2: Best Gender/Class Choice for Story

Good point; it would be awkward if Varric was killed during the storyline . . . My major trouble is that I seem to uniquely capable of making any character into a rival . . .

    OotS 781 is up

Yikes. One should not mock Belkar. Somehow I think he may not want to leave the arena . . . ever . . .

    The Vampie Class preview

I dunno, isn't that against the intent of 4E? Kind of like how Rogues can sneak attack Undead? But I agree that it is a very flavorful class.

Why is there no talk about the Castle Keepers Guide preview?

I kind of agree on the post level 12 stuff. D&D was really developed around levels 1 to 10 (or so) and games descended from it continue to do best at these levels. There is a role for "epic gaming" but the system always seems to start having issues; even if these aren't severe I still like the...

How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

I don't know. As the expanded universe has continued going, it seems like dozens of powerful Jedi are running around (ranging from Starkiller to Darth Krayt before his fall). Amber, on the other hand, is a great example of a setting where the PCs are supernatural but not necessarily spell...

How is the Wizard vs Warrior Balance Problem Handled in Fantasy Literature?

I think that a lot of magic in myth and legend had the unfortunate tendency either to corrupt or to go horribly wrong. Look at what happened when Frodo used the power of the One Ring at the end of the novel Return of the King -- his curse had a very unfortunate effect. Or consider what...

D&D 4E [4E Players, mainly] Ever thought of defecting to Pathfinder?

What is the concern with Essentials? I liked the lower complexity and the high production values in the books. I worry a bit that the soft cover books won't wear as well but they are easy to carry around. Plus, the slayer is the Fighter class I have been missing since AD&D . . .

    God, I *LOVE* BECMI!

    Yes, I am curious as well . . . :)

    Outsiders?

Yes, I was surprised, as well, that they were not in the default Monsters and Treasures book. They seemed like a very classic type of monster and I was curious to see the Castles and Crusades take on them (even if they were different than in the classic AD&D canon).

The Case For Castles & Crusades

The faster time to develop a character really does make killing a character more viable during a standard session. The number of design choices in 3.0/3.5 D&D makes it difficult to introduce a new character on short notice.

    What's your favorite spellcasting system?

The force mechanics (is the Force magic or psionics or neither) in Star Wars Saga seemed to be a very mechanically elegant way to handle spell casting. That being said, Ars Magica or Mage probably have the most evocative spell casting systems.

The Case For Castles & Crusades

Yes, Charisma being the save to resist death magic was a really cool innovation. It also, very nicely, pulls the adventuring party towards being a bunch of humans (not that demi-humans are not viable but that three Primes is really, really nice). This is an elegant solution to the exotic races...

    Small Group C&C

I mean the creatures in the modules. A lot of them are just "physical primes only". This makes a lot of creatures extremely vulnerable to a clever mage. Of course, the modules that I have read are typically up to around 7th level where this is less of a concern. But if I were to run it...
