D&D General The Problem with Evil or what if we don't use alignments?

In answer to the question the one thing I figured out whilst running and playing 5e is that when I can I don't use the stated alignment for any creature I use from the Monster Manual. In my first game as DM i fell foul of were rats, in retrospect I should have lowered their immunity to...

Hurt? Complain yes, but what do you mean hurt?

D&D General The Problem with Evil or what if we don't use alignments?

Well technically I'm one of those previous edition users, but I believe there are more new ones especially thanks to stuff like Critical Role for example.

D&D General UPDATE: this isn't greenlit : Jeff Grubb's Lost Mystara Sourcebook To Be Released

How would this need to be rewritten to make it fit as a setting?

D&D General Does the killer DM exist?

An unrepentant DM? No I've played with some who make a fine example, but to call them unrepentant would be far too harsh. No one is perfect at this, so these people make mistakes but on this subject? Exactly how far is too far?

    Tomorrow War

But have they ever been done well? Off the top of my head I thought the first Terminator movie was a fine example of this, but then they made sequels...

    Tomorrow War

Makes me wonder have they considered a series set around someone sent from the future to prevent some great tragedy only to eventually discover they were intended to cause that event to insure their future came about? There was one about a cop sent from the future I believe that was inspired by...

D&D General UPDATE: this isn't greenlit : Jeff Grubb's Lost Mystara Sourcebook To Be Released

How would it come across today then? Its just that why would WOTC have problems with this being released then? They could use it to demonstrate their interest in "classic" settings and it wouldn't cost them much especially if it proved popular. Do they have something to fear about expanding the...

D&D General The Problem with Evil or what if we don't use alignments?

Faerun I believe made an attempt to correct that at one point up near the Icewind Dales I believe. Then of course Eberron. I'm more curious about explaining their true history. Tolkien, well the movie trilogy explained them as having been formerly elves tortured into their current state. I'm...

D&D General The Problem with Evil or what if we don't use alignments?

How about Eberron? That's where I got my idea about Orcs in the setting. Were they more Neutral there?

D&D General What are your Core races?

No elves, dwarves or halflings? Well then no humans either! That way you remove the comfortable option also this should also exclude half elves as well since no elves means no half elves either! I'll need to think about what which races would serves as replacement core races. For now, Kobolds...

D&D General The Problem with Evil or what if we don't use alignments?

I ran a version of the Sunless Citadel set in Kalamar and had a friendly kobold village be the reason an npc ranger was involved in the game as the residents of the Citadel were threatening the kobolds that saved his life. Its easy enough to just have them be plain old evil, but what if you...

I picture elves as more Neutral with somewhat good tendencies however that does mean there are some evil tendencies too and I'm not talking drow here!

The impossibility of Point of Light settings

Well what isn't taken into account is exactly how much food and drinkable water is available within the settlement itself. If its a post apocalyptic society for example they may have vast underground levels used as hydroponics and access to the sea with the means to remove any pollutants or...

    The Bad Batch - SPOILERS

Given the time period i suspect Edit: I posted something very different initially then I remembered she would be closer to Leia's age and Omega is just a few years younger than Boba so would be too old to be her!

D&D General The Problem with Evil or what if we don't use alignments?

The more I read these replies the more I'm thinking of playing up the dualities so that each god has their opposing counterpart and what's been witnessed is the Dawnfather faith is gradually falling under the control of the Strife Emperor its alternate identity. No needs more work, but this...

    The Bad Batch - SPOILERS

Still makes me wonder why they didn't notice her before. You would think a female clone would be quite well known among the clones. What if that Jedi we saw being stretchered out may have mind swapped with Omega before her death and Omega's abilities are more to do with the amnesiac Jedi's mind...

D&D 5E (2024) YOU are in charge of the next PHB! What do you change?

Just a thought, but has anyone suggested the Nature Cleric become the new Druid with the loss of metal armour in return for the ability to wild shape? No that would be too much especially as that would require the druid spells to be added to the Cleric's reportoire unless made domain spells?
