    Instilling fear

A lack of cleric also means a lack of countering undead. Have them face undead with resistances to certain weapons. Make it so that maybe the undead are not dealing tons of lethal damage to them, but make it clear that all the attacks by the players are not (at least noticeably) having any...

    Why wouldn't Someone Learn Magic...

Well, naturally things somewhat depend on how you structure your world's social and economic side as well as the mentality of 'typical' mages in your world, but several explenations come to mind: Just like real school, learnign magic costs money. Look at the cost of a single first level spell...

Old school/new school definitions -- meaningless?

Well as to the remark that there is more old skool now then ever before, I disagree with, but this has to do with the way I look at defining Old Skool. Imho it cannot be completely detached from the overall rulesset. Old Skool has to do with the era in which the ruleset was wonky and left a lot...

    What is a dungeon?

Well, lessee, I must admit that I have not actually played/DMmed all of these, so I may be a bit off, but based on the description/quick read through, I'd say that the following are dungeons (looking at some newer modules here): RTTOEE Sunless Citadel Forge of Fury Heart of Nightfang Spire Deep...

Why do people pretend CR makes sense?

Well... kinda like political systems. Democracy sucks, but it's the best system around. So is the ECL/CR system. It is in any case completely impossible to use a critter CR as a good indication of the actual challenge. The environmental factors are so important in deciding whether something is a...

How much bonus XP for player logs?

Hmmm... In all I like the idea of rewarding action or fate points, swahbuckling cards etc. or giving XP for _anything_ that increases enjoyment as espoused by Reynard. The problem of tying it to Log entries is that this takes time. Depending upon the type of players, how often you play and...

    Fighting Demons

Read up well as to the various powers and immunities of the Demon in question as the DM, forgetting something reduces the challenge vastly. Play the Demon smartly and completely to his strengths. He should gate in aid if at all possible. A well coordinating party of SIX players against a SINGLE...

    non-interventionist gods (in a D&D world)

Hmmm, yeah.. I'd say, it is pretty much whatever you want as a DM. There is Eberron, as mentioned, as an example of a non-interventionist/distant pantheon There is Forgotten Realms, where Chosen of ..., Avatars and gods themselves literally walk around and where the gods are very much...

Please Recommend A Good Campaign Adventure

Plumb the depths of these boards. A while ago, there was some discussion on how to use the Free Original Adventures from the Wizards' website to build adventure paths. The good thing is... theyre free!!! Also, the DCC line, especially now that DCC35 (IIRC) is out, detailing the campaign world...

    What is a dungeon?

;) what a silly question... asking a definition to this forum that _everyone_ can agree with.... It is almost touching to see such innocence displayed on these boards... Anyhoo... I agree with Gilladian on the issue of the definition. As a generalization, one could say that a location based...

Go Play (Secret Gamer Code Shhhhhh)

To those who somehow have a great antipathy towards fellow gamers. Be glad there is now a symbol that lets you avoid these ppl! Those of us who think most other gamers are cool ppl now have a way to ID eachother without having to resort to bringing up a topic that in some situations may lead to...

Combat on a ship at sea... how?

This is true for HUMAN bodies. Fish however can be 'fished' using dynamite. So maybe, just maybe, Sahuagin, merfolk etc. have body weight/volume ratio's more akin to fish than to humans. So the fishmen may come floating to the surface earlier... Just a thought... In any case, it is up to the DM...

    advice for a new DM

Be careful with the storyline / flowchart issue. Be prepared to chuck it should developments (i.e. the reactions by the players) be different than you expected. Adhering too much to a flowchart leads to railroading, railroading leads to trainwrecks, trainwrecks lead to unhappy players and DM's...

Where are the really small creatures?

Where they are? They all got killed by those hordes of 1st level PC's trying to reach the next level without too much personal risk... At a CR of 1/10 you have any idea how many you need to kill to make it to the next level? Let alone the absolute worthlessness of the stuff you take from them...

Never played D&D and taking role as DM

Already tons of good advice. One thing I have not heard yet is on the personal/human interaction side. Agree with eachother that: - yes you are all new at this - yes you are all trying to have fun - yes you (and they) will make plenty mistakes about this The important thing is to talk about it...

Combat on a ship at sea... how?

As for fighting things IN the water, while the PC's are on board the ship: Lightning bolt does wonders. So does anything that will provide explosions under water. The pressure wave will mean lots of dazed/stunned merfolk come floating to the surface...

    Fighting Familiars!

At low (i.e. first or second) level, the familiar can sometimes be a nice distraction in combat. Usually, when I DM, I allow the players to use their familiars (usually cats, rats or ravens) as a sort of 'breaking of concentration' on enemy spellcasters (which at those levels are usually...
