Rambling about the nature of campaigns and magic

I'm the kind of GM who doesn't like the particular type of setting that 'consistency with the rules' tends to produce. Personally, I just don't like it when it only makes sense that every city worth its salt has Zone of Truth cast during important trials, or when every smart king is wearing...

    A New Power

Jorran chuckled when he saw a dent on the front of the Dawnsprinter--with bits of russet-brown paint in it. "I thought I had seen the last of the Umber Dart when it exploded in orbit, but you brought some of its paint with you just to cheer me up." He seemed to notice Kia finally. "You seem a...

    Zombie Horror Game [Full]

I'm interested (and would personally prefer d20m to freeform). I've got an idea for a character, too: a relatively unknown writer who was in town to visit a friend who had moved to Sunnybright a year or two before 'Z-Day'. He'd be a writer by profession, but he would have grown up in a rural...

    Good alchemy/herbology rules for non-spellcasters?

Ok, so, in the new (Grim Tales) campaign I've started, one of the PCs is a crazy old shaman who uses alchemy and herblore as a major focus (like how another character might focus on archery)...and I'm looking for a book (or books) and/or a PDF that has stuff like (non-magical) potions, poisons...

    [May] Campaign updates?

I started my new campaign yesterday... It's a Grim Tales game that takes place in a relatively wild and dangerous northern part of the world. Generally speaking, it's a saxonesque culture with definate viking elements (like how a new king is elected by the earls from the previous king's...

Your favorite class and race and other things.

I'm a warrior at heart...human, and a ranger, barbarian, or fighter, with higher-than average mental scores. Oh, and preferably NG, CG, or LE if I have to be anything non-good. No idea. I have a few, but not too many...so I'll list them... 1. Two-handed sword. Not a pike-lopper like most think...

Minimum time and/or number of players to game?

Well, if character creation isn't involved (i.e. the characters are ready to play), and it's just by-the-seat-of-my-pants style GMing, then 2 hours would be my minimum. As for players...I'd say a minimum of 3 being there for the whole session.

    A New Power - OOC

Now me, on the other hand... I'm home almost all wednesdays, fridays, and sundays, and I'm around in the mornings and afternoons/evenings on the other weekdays, and I run games roughly every other saturday... So, I've got time for at least 2-3 posts a day, give or take.

    silly voices and accents

Not really. While I do try to modify the cadence, use of expressions, tone, etc. of my voice to distinguish between NPCs. As well, all squires/servants invariably have a certain pythonesque variation on the british accent. Oh, and for my upcoming anglo-saxon-themed campaign, I'm going to make...

    [Grim Tales] Spellcasting Variant

UPDATE! I've been talking with the player who wanted the 'arcane archer' sort of character, and he's decided he'd rather just be a 'mundane' archer...overall, it makes for a better backstory for the character, and it means the group won't have a 'real' spellcaster...of course, that's only if...

    A New Power

"I'd hardly call it 'mastery' as it is, but my focus is on combat, if only because I'm better with my saber than directly with the Force. I haven't had much opportunity for practice with either, though.

    A New Power

Jorran thought for a long time after what Miera said. "From the sounds of it, I don't think I'll have any trouble 'converting' and starting my training...I just hope I haven't gotten too old to learn everything all over again."

So, how do you create new characters?

28-point point-buy for PCs, 25-point array for 'average' NPCs, "I just pick their stats" for important/recurring NPCs.

    A New Power

Jorran thought for quite some time. "Hmmm...I think the Sith were on to something with their concept, but its goal is no less flawed than the Jedi concept..." He paused for a moment, gathering his thoughts. "I say the Force is power, for lack of a better word. It's a just another way to...

    A New Power

"Peace is a lie, there is only Passion. Through passion, I gain Strength. Through strength, I gain Power. Through power, I gain Victory. Through victory, My chains are broken. The Force shall free me. He did not look pleased uttering the words; they obviously left a bad taste in his mouth. The...

    A New Power

Jorran began. "There is no emotion; there is peace. There is no ignorance; there is knowledge. There is no passion; there is serenity. There is no death; there is the Force." He sighed after that last part, remembering his master, and everyone he had known that had been killed in the Purge.

    A New Power

Jorran dressed in his clean change of clothes, leaving his coat and weapons-belt behind. He left the sleeping quarters and walked to what he could only assume was the 'big hut'.

Jorran yawned and rubbed the sleep from his eyes. "I am now. So, I'm going to guess it's time for breakfast, or else I'm needed somewhere. Just let me get dressed."
