    Green Ronin's Dragon Age

To be clear: After one week's session of balance-free encounters, do you try to bring in new players the following week to replace the ones that didn't survive the experience? ;)

    Duels

Off the top of my head: Honor: The one PC should be calling for his buddies to hold off. (Could be difficult, depending on your party makeup.) Situational: The PCs facing down a much larger, more powerful force. The PC paladin calls out to the evil warlord for a duel to decide the matter. If...

    Duels

1st edition L5R had a sweet dueling system, but the rules were difficult to puzzle out. I'm hoping the new edition pulls it off. Regardless, that game supports a ton of 1-on-1 dueling, is a lot of fun and frightfully deadly.

Feat Tax and Why It Harms the System

For my game, this sort of metagaming is ludicrous. Clearly, this isn't the case for your game, but I feel the desire to represent the 4e crowd that doesn't feel this way. (This is one reason I left 3.5). For us, it would be something along the lines of: "The imperial fencing academy of...

Sweet! How did the game run? Any issues?

Greedy player doesn't know when to quit

Wait a gosh durn minute ... So what's from keeping the remaining monsters from all the levels (someone must have noticed the dungeon is getting cleared out) from banding together, setting a trap and destroying this PC? The party is acting utterly predictable, is in enemy territory, and is...

Greedy player doesn't know when to quit

Turn this annoyance into a boon. You now know what drives this player --- loot. Use this carrot to get what you want out of the game as a DM. For instance, Loot-Mad PC is doing the maze collecting every last CP. He encounters an NPC treasure-hunting wizard hustling to get to the magical gate...

    Gaming vrs Toy Trains

We had a great TV show once upon a time! And now we have had 3 movies. Granted, imo they all sucked, but beggars/choosers and all that. My vote for gaming. But the nice thing about trains is that pirating isn't such a big deal.

    Raiding vs. tabletopping

IMO, it is that I can log on at any time. The gratification is shallow, compared to a good tabletop session, but I don't need to try to schedule it with four of my friends. Quick, immediate immersion, without the wait.

Your introduction to D&D: what order of books?

Beginning the age of 8: 1. Basic D&D rule book, run by a babysitter. He gave away the games because they were "Satanic." Given the influence they have had on my life, they might very well have been. 2. Expert D&D. Spent the summer at my cousin's house playing D&D and running through the...

What is "The Good of the Game" and "Playing D&D Well"?

@Hussar Maybe that's why so many of the "original" PCs were lawful evil, neutral evil variants. They were still operating out of the, "I can win this," paradigm. When I hear tales of the original games, it seems like someone was getting backstabbed/betrayed every other session.

    Falling off the 4ed bandwagon

Off topic: I wish I could give endless XP to everyone who has posted to this thread. It had edition war stamped into its genetics, and somehow we've all played nice and had a fruitful conversation to boot. Way to go ENworld. Nicely played.

    Goodman Games solicits input

It also occurred to me that they might be trying to hedge their bets. What if 5e does not allow 3pp content? Goodman is out in the cold. Better to set a wider foundation now, so that it doesn't all tank in 2 years.

    Falling off the 4ed bandwagon

Hey, hey, c'mon now. A +1 sword was way cooler in AD&D. Seriously though, I miss the "magic" of earlier editions. A part of me wonders if that isn't nostalgia though. I can still remember stumbling upon my first cloak ... of ... elvenkind. WOW!

    Falling off the 4ed bandwagon

FWIW, this describes me. Turned off by powers and treasures at first, but quickly grew to love the game in implementation. For me and our group, 4E is a DM's best friend, which in turn makes the game more enjoyable for the other players.

    Falling off the 4ed bandwagon

Merc, I have many of the same concerns you do, but they weren't significant enough to kick me off the wagon. I'm sure my homebrew is anything but balanced in the macro sense, but it works for us at the table. I hope you find a game that better suits your sensibilities. Life is too short to...
