    D&D 5E (2014) Maze dungeon adventures (kid-friendly)

My boys and I recently did a real "lost in the woods" maze and had a lot of fun. They're getting close enough to being able to handle D&D instead of the simpler Hero Quest that I want to start looking for what to run them through first. I think a nice multi-level "Mad Mage's Maze" maze type...

WotC Estimating D&D’s Revenue, Teos Abadia crunches the numbers.

Teos is on fire with posts this week. He posts irregularly so I don't check his blog frequently, so thanks for highlighting the posts here. I only discovered him through posts about the creator summit.

D&D General Which of these should be core classes for D&D?

Good poll. I am fine with making Ranger a fighter subclass. I could see completely throwing out Druid, and instead creating a couple of Druid-type Warlock patrons that replicate the same general ability set. This would also expand possible invocations to include different types of...

    D&D General Favored Enemies

I realized today that I seem to have some favored enemies in the modules I write as a DM. Castle Dracula (Castlevania): Undead, including lots of skeletons and some vampires. Secondary: Constructs Against the Idol of the Sun: Humanoids, specifically Aarakocra and their priests. Death...

DMs Guild Have you ever tried fighting a tractor with a sword? (5e 6th level)

I recently posted Ghost Farm, a 5e module for 6th level characters. Have you ever considered how hard it would be to fight a tractor with a sword or greataxe? Your players deserve to find out! This adventure traps the player characters in a small pocket plane set up by nefarious forces. They...

D&D 5E (2014) Chris Perkins, Dungeon Mastering Tips. Premiers Sept 12, noon Central.

I'm about halfway through and this is really good stuff. Kid-friendly with no bad language, too, which I appreciate. I'm going to share this with some of my players in case they get interested in DMing. Chris is also a good speaker in terms of vocal variety, pacing, and keeping it...

D&D 5E (2014) Would You Play This - "Dragons Must Die"

I was good with all of it until you got to the part where "all magic is bad, delete 2/3 of the PHB unless you want to make the problem worse." If you want a system where magic is saved for rare occasions instead of used daily, D&D 5e is not the game you want to play.

D&D General Summon the Extraordinary: Rent Miniatures, Monsters, and Castles to Transform Your Campaign!

Before you do any pricing, be sure you get your packaging, shipping and inventory management costs together. Packaging and shipping over 4 rentals will probably outweigh your cost of acquisition for the minis. Billing/recurring billing for rental is also something you'll want to automate.

D&D 5E (2014) Starting a higher level campaign soon as a player: what to watch out for? What should my DM watch out for?

Uncommons at level 12? Stinks to be a martial in that kind of environment. Magic items are the only way non-casters can gain mobility options like flight and spider climb, as well as (aside from certain class features) all kinds of defenses like resistances, save bonuses, better AC, and miss...

D&D General What "Rating" Do You Prefer Your D&D

PG-13 for violence, PG for pretty much everything else. There may be allusions to adult stuff happening, but never onscreen. I run it at my house and my kids are awake and in the next room for half the game. No-profanity rule although people don't always remember it.

D&D 5E (2014) If you were the ulitharid, what would you do?

I agree that he will generally commit up to half his meatshields to the battle. He also has awareness of the location of all creatures within 2 miles, and should be able to vector his forces to kill any individual scouting githyanki and guide the party past any guard posts so they can make a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Pitch me a new WotC setting (+)

New setting? Right now, I'm considering "fixing" dinosaurs (I feel they are too weak) and a setting where dinosaurs are the major beast threat seems interesting. It'd probably be a points of light setting, and would need a lot of technologically primitive sections, although you could also have...

D&D 5E (2014) Giving PCs Dilemmas, not Problems

One classic example that did not result in losing the war was the Coventry dilemma (WWII). In short form: The bad guys are going to bomb Coventry. You know this because you've been intercepting and decoding their transmissions. A) If you evacuate Coventry, it'll be too big to hide, and...

    D&D 5E (2014) [Let's Read] Azrael's Guide to the Apocalypse

I really like the Consequences concept and how you describe the implementation. I'd like to use something like that, but it would have to be at the right time and place. I've recently started a Baldur's Gate II in 5e, so perhaps the point where souls are getting stolen back from the BBEG and...

D&D 5E (2014) Top selling product types on the DM's Guild: July 2023

I did a post like this back in February 2020, and decided to revisit it. Here are the Adamantine bestsellers, representing the top 0.38% sellers. Note that if you sort by "Popularity" you'll get a different set of results, with Gold sellers (top 90%) on the 3rd or 4th page. There are 124...

    D&D General Outside Inspirations

My first 5e campaign (now published as Castle Dracula on the DM Guild) was a level-by-level adaptation of Super Castlevania IV (SNES) for 5e, for levels 3-12. It worked out pretty well, with varied terrain/hazards and enemies by area, plus an easy choice of music for each level/area. My next...

D&D General Demonweb Pits!? Neverwinter the cg is going there. Could that mean the RPG is?

Turbine's DDO had Lolth and FR make an appearance around a decade ago, too.

Planescape Planescape Pre-order Page Shows Off The Books!

That's really pretty. The setting has never appealed to me (I played PS: Torment through once) but they certainly appear to have nailed the execution. Looks a lot better than the Spelljammer set.

D&D 5E (2014) What Level Should This Spell Be? (Artificer, Homebrew)

Agree with 2nd level, but I think it should be a save instead of an attack roll.

    D&D 5E (2014) Level 20 Dragon Fight design advice

Does the multiattack let it make one bite, one slap, or two claw attacks? Or is it all 4? Things I really like about your dragon! -Ignite: Blocks off terrain. Flight takes Concentration, so this affects all equally. -Tail smack stun. -Colossal stride. Also potentially lessens OAs. -Detect...
