    D&D 5E (2014) PHB Feats taken - RESULTS

I see. To me, I think those feats are well balanced, certainly not over powerful. If the expertise option were not there, I don't think they would be worth it.

    D&D 5E (2014) PHB Feats taken - RESULTS

I mentioned two feats for the Fighter because you said he is a Variant Human with Spy, which I assumed was one feat, and Skilled be a second one. What is Spy? I think this is on the way to the goal, but though it is general and offers the three skill option, it is less powerful than any one of...

Yeah, I agree. I think going from nothing to expertise all in one shot is too much and should not be allowed. Yes, but... The Rogue has expertise in more than one skill, and similarly could take the Skilled feat to get expertise in even more skills. That Fighter has to use two feats to get...

    D&D 5E (2014) PHB Feats taken - RESULTS

Confusion is very possible. :) I'm trying to look at it this way: Regardless of the source of your skills, your character spent time to become proficient in them. The choice of a career (class) grants additional skills. You cannot gain expertise without first having proficiency. If you have...

    D&D 5E (2014) PHB Feats taken - RESULTS

Is it correct to understand that you think background skill should be lesser than class or race skills? You could change the feat to say, "You gain +1 to the ability score of your choice and proficiency in three skills or tools of your choice. Instead of gaining proficiency in a skill or tool...

    D&D 5E (2014) PHB Feats taken - RESULTS

You are right that tool proficiencies are quite similar to skills. The problem with tool proficiencies is the lack of in-game importance for most of them. Whereas skills have a dedicated section in the PHB about all the ways they can be used, tools are pretty much ignored and thus rare to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rating Wizard Traditions at 2nd Level

How would you rate each second level tradition feature of the Wizard subclasses, on a scale from 1 to 10, and compared to a +2 ASI? Arcane Ward Minor Conjuration Portent Hypnotic Gaze Sculpt Spells Improved Minor Illusion Grim Harvest Minor Alchemy Bladesong

But Bards get expertise, too, as do Knowledge Clerics. The expertise granted by the Lore Master Wizard (which I am playing right now) is by far the most useful and interesting part of the class: the changing damage types is very situational and saving throws is a nice touch, but the int skills...

    D&D 5E (2014) PHB Feats taken - RESULTS

It seems that class features are often roughly equivalent to feats. The Cleric domains seem well-balanced overall, and so using them for reference, in comparing Cleric domains, it seemed to me that 1st level features, excluding domain spells, are roughly designed on a 5-point scale. Some...

    D&D 5E (2014) PHB Feats taken - RESULTS

What Skilled really needs is the ability to gain expertise if you already have the proficiency. This makes it less, "I'll pick up a few extra skills that aren't core to my concept." and more, "I'm going to be the best [your skill here] on the planet!" A +1 wouldn't hurt, either.

    D&D 5E (2014) Damage Types Are Lame

Yeah. I feel like the developers just decided to slack off in monster creation when it came to damage types. I wonder why? Is there an uncomplicated homebrew way to add these to monster stats, or does every single monster need to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis?

    D&D 5E (2014) Damage Types Are Lame

It's a bit of an exaggeration, but in general, it seems monsters are immune to a whole bunch of damage types or none at all. Most notable are the non-magical types: how many creatures are specifically resistant to one of piercing, slashing, or bludgeoning rather than all three? Very, very few...

    D&D 5E (2014) Simple Alternate Initiative

That's a good idea, and a good way to mark the end of your turn. "Your turn ends when you roll for the next round's initiative and give the result to the DM."

    D&D 5E (2014) Simple Alternate Initiative

I want to keep initiative simple, but I also want to make weapon choices matter. What do you think of this simple initiative alternative? Simple Initiative ----------------- Round 1: Roll as normal Round 2+: Roll again and subtract the highest number from this list according to your actions...

New Errata & Sage Advice Compendium (Sleep & Trance Are Fixed!)

The one bit that I think is still missed is this: "Elves ... meditate deeply ... for 4 hours a day. After resting in this way, you gain the same benefit that a human does from 8 hours of sleep." 1 hour of trance = 2 hours of sleep And, "A long rest is a period of extended downtime, at least...

    D&D 5E (2014) AoE vs. Single-Target Spells

Quantifying AoE vs. Single Target spells I am trying to compare spells for damage output. Spells vary from being single target to small area of effect to large area of effect. Also, effect areas can vary in shape. In theory, a big AoE spell like Fireball can hit a whole bunch of enemies, but...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D a Story or a Game? Discuss.

D&D is a game: we play characters, roll dice, try to win and not lose. D&D is also a story: characters are travelling on an adventure in a fictional world, with dialogue and social interaction, plot hooks, etc. In your opinion, is D&D more story or more game? What are the consequences of that?

    D&D 5E (2014) Critical Failures

Change critical failures from "something extra bad happens to the character rolling" to "something extra interesting happens because of the character rolling". As 1s get rolled more frequently, more unusual things happen. For example, my warlock once rolled a 1 using Eldritch Blast. The blast...

D&D 5E (2014) What to do about flakes?!

Some of the players in our group can't come every time, others get sick, or things come up. We just pretend like their characters don't exist. When they come back the next time, the DM makes up a brief story of "the character was sick", or asleep, or got lost, or was locked in a closet the whole...
